I had forgottent this name until today and really like it to go with siblings Charlie and Tilly.

I know they will all have the 'ie' ending but I don't mind this, as I have gone for nn names rather than the longer versions.

What do you think of the name?

Fairly frequently used down in Cornwall.

My cousin is a Bridie and also a neighbour is - both in their late 20s. Know a couple of little ones in nursery too.

BridieMay · 16/04/2015 20:19

Thought I'd add my two cents since I am a 20-year old Bridie :D The only trouble I've ever had is people reading it as Birdie, but honestly that's not the worst nickname in the world! Other than that, barely anyone makes the Bridie/bride wedding connection, but a lot of people comment on it and like it, and tend to remember it :)

VipersBosom · 16/04/2015 20:25

You're not Irish, though, are you, BridieMay? I can imagine it having very different connotations outside of Ireland.

HangingInAGruffaloStance · 16/04/2015 20:32

It has a cute sound, but the meat-filled pastry connotations are overwhelming. The equivalent would be a Scottish person calling their child "sausage roll" (not a suggestion Grin).

BridieMay · 16/04/2015 23:26

VipersBosom, I'm not - although I do have a lot of Irish family (actual close ones, not a great-great-grandma twice removed XD) - but I'm not sure if the original poster is either so if she's not it probably still applies :)

BridieMay · 16/04/2015 23:28

And yes, the pastry connotations are a bit annoying :D I suppose I'll just have to avoid moving to Scotland in the future!

HangingInAGruffaloStance · 17/04/2015 07:30

On the upside (pastry) Bridies are very nice!

MrsBungle · 17/04/2015 07:35

I thought Bridie was a nickname for Bridget. My great aunty Bridie is definitely Bridget. It says old Irish lady to me and delicious meat pie!

youmakemydreams · 17/04/2015 07:42

Another one that thinks of the pasty but I'm scottish. I like the sound of Biddy more but again is a word used for an old wifie up here.

undermythumb · 17/04/2015 07:43

My mother's friend is Bridie (short for Bridget). I think it's lovely.

Anniebridie · 06/07/2017 23:06

I just thought I'd add too this considering my name is also Bridie (well Bridie-Anne). I've hated since I was little and mostly get the nickname 'Annie' now (too many people saying Birdie or Heidi). But everyone I've ever spoke to has loved it and I've had so many comments of how pretty it sounds. I live in the UK but I'm half Irish. I've honestly never heard of anyone else called Bridie-Anne so I guess it is original but I think I'll just stick with Annie :)

WetsTheFinger · 06/07/2017 23:07

Love it!

1fedupmama · 06/07/2017 23:09

It's unusual, in a good way. Don't think I have ever met anyone with that name, although I have a Brodie.
Bridie just reminds me of a pastry my nana used to buy haha.

wobblywonderwoman · 06/07/2017 23:09

No no... Awful and I should know

bridgetreilly · 07/07/2017 09:17

I really don't like it at all.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/07/2017 10:05

Lovely, also love Bridget.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/07/2017 10:08

Was just going to comment on the traveller bashing !
ZOMBIE thread 😂

Amee1992x · 07/07/2017 12:07

My friends sister gets called Birdie. Real name Bernadine.

Ohyesiam · 07/07/2017 16:03

We live in Somerset, and I know a couple of young Bridies . it's very pretty, feminine but strong.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 07/07/2017 23:18

Argh, zombie thread.
My twopennorth was going to be that I didn't know that about Biddy, and now know what Biddy Baxter (producer of Blue Peter, I think) was presumably really called.

ludog · 08/07/2017 15:35

I'm sorry, but the first thing that comes to mind is this:

dementedma · 09/07/2017 16:57

yep. Definitely not for Scotland.Only one meaning of Bridie up here

LiviaAD · 11/07/2017 13:41

Oh, Irish traveller or a big greasy sausage roll, I don't like it at all but revenge is sweet, wait till you hear the name I'm asking about...

midsomermurderess · 12/07/2017 14:20

As a shortening for Brigit, I like it, but as other Scots have said, here it's a type of pasty.

LJFM2B · 14/07/2017 11:05

I really like it, i also like Briony which is very similar. I have only met 1 of each :). i think it fits in with your other 2 childrens names too all class but not boring in the slightest ... Tilly is on our list too! xx
