Is it weird for all kids names to start with same letter?

There's a lot of 'J' names in our family for boys. We're now expecting again and I just wondered if it's a bit odd to have another 'J' if it's a boy? I genuinely can't decide on a name this time, and need somewhere to start! I want something simple, and quite like shortened versions of names as full name (eg son is Joe, not Joseph) but hubby wants another J name.

It's a bit kardashian!! Although I they are classic names it may not be so bad

Having the same initial can be irritating when post arrives/certain school events when you get confused with your sibling. It used to drive my friend nuts!

BucketFullOfDinosaurs · 11/04/2015 19:50

I imagine it would cause confusion in years to come when letters arrive for "Mr J Averagebear". Also, personally I find it a bit odd, but that's just my opinion.

PotteringAlong · 11/04/2015 19:50

No, but we avoided it for confusion of post etc; ie get something addressed to j blogs and if you've got 3 j blogs in the house you don't know who it is!

MyNameIsSuz · 11/04/2015 19:50

I don't think it's weird, have seen plenty of families do it. If you like the name go for it. What's the name, how similar is it to Joe?

GlitzAndGigglesx · 11/04/2015 19:51

No I think it can sound nice as long as the names aren't really similar like siblings in my nephews school who have a single letter difference. Think Jade and Jane

LL0015 · 11/04/2015 19:54

I think this is perfectly normal, I come from a family of 5 RW (parents had same initial) and strangely called all three DC with the same R initial. Post is a non factor. None of us cared.

And my aunt/uncle had funny names too. Their names rhymed (eg Lee and Dee) but all 4 DC had the same initial.

I unwittingly did it too. I honestly didn't realise my DD and DS had a 5 letter name beginning with the same initial for about 3 months after his birth when I wrote a b-day card. I looked at it and was Confused BlushGrin

MadameJosephine · 11/04/2015 19:59

I honestly don't think it's an issue, i have the same initial as both my parents and my brother and have given my children names beginning with that letter too ( we are also all J names)

theaveragebear1983 · 11/04/2015 19:59

Our only 'J' choice t the moment is 'Jude', I like 'jett' but DH has vetoed! Also like ted and Todd. It best not b a girl because I have no idea about girls names!

I think it's really weird when people do this deliberately. I silently judge parents who do this, but I also judge people who give their children all flower names or all months or similar. I'm not a fan of matchy names.

I do understand the problem though, there are loads of really good 'J' names! I love Jude and I also like Joshua, Jacob, Joseph, Jack/Jackson, Jago, Jonah, James....

Same problem with girls names beginning with 'C' Confused

QueQuesto · 12/04/2015 19:33

It's a bit twee but not too bad if you stick to real J names without having to make new ones up Duggar style. Jinger anyone? Hmm

anorakgirl · 12/04/2015 19:38

My two have the same starting letter but they are very different names and we genuinely didn't twig til ds2 was about 4 months old!

IvoryMadonna · 12/04/2015 19:43

Not an issue, or only a very temporary one. A few years down the line they will have established their own social circles, and most people won't know what all the rest of the family names are.

BifsWif · 13/04/2015 11:27

I'm thinking of doing this but it's not intentional! I have a boy with an 'F' name, and Id like to call DD Francesca when she arrives but the fact that it's the same initial is putting me off.

SunnyBaudelaire · 13/04/2015 11:29

there is a local family firm by us who gave all their sons names beginning with the same letter so that they would not have to change the livery on the trucks they use. lol.

Queazy · 13/04/2015 21:53

It reminds me of those Milly, Molly and Mandy books I read as a kid. Not weird at all - in fact, I think it's really lovely.

Luciferbox · 13/04/2015 21:57

It's weirder when all siblings except one share the same initial. I know a family of G's. Except the youngest who's a J. But his name could be spelt with a G. I never understood why they left him out.

OutragedFromLeeds · 13/04/2015 22:02

Milly Molly Mandy is one person, not three siblings!

emwithme · 13/04/2015 22:23

Well, you could be likened to the Duggars - with:

Joshua (M)
Jana (F-twin)
John-David (M-twin)
Jill (F)
Jessa (F)
Jinger (F)
Joseph (M)
Josiah (M)
Joy-Anna (F)
Jedidiah (M-twin)
Jeremiah (M-twin)
Jason (M)
James (M)
Justin (M)
Jackson (M)
Jennifer (F)
Johannah (F)
Jordyn (F)
Josie (F)

(Jackson was going to be Judah, but wasn't, and then they lost Jubilee (F) at 20-ish weeks gestation).

They had named the first few with Js so carried on so one wasn't left out.

Josh and his wife (Anna) are going along an M-theme for their children (Mackynzie, Michael and Marcus, so far, with another on the way).

Jinger really got the short straw didn't she?!

DealForTheKids · 13/04/2015 22:36

I know an Amelia with brothers Angus and Andrew... Possibly a bit weird but worked for them! I wouldn't think to judge

Yay4may · 14/04/2015 22:19

I think matchy names are super odd!

Fattycow · 14/04/2015 23:13

I share my initial with my brother. Bloody annoying with the post! I've had my dad opening letters for me, thinking they were for my little brother. He was young enough to not really get any mail or to understand letters, but one time it was a very personal letter to me!

BackOnPlanetEarth · 15/04/2015 00:04

It a bit twee but not awful iykwim. I think people probably wouldn't notice most the time. I have the same initials as my DB and it's was irritating at times. I think it's best if everyone gets their own letter.

BackOnPlanetEarth · 15/04/2015 00:11

If you have twins or triplets then it may be better if they have their own initial. Their was a bit on Radio 4's Money Box about a triplet being denied a mortgage due to her sisters credit rating being shite. They had the same initial and, of course, had the same birthdate. I couldn't find the podcast but HERE is a transcript of the show.
