Is it weird for all kids names to start with same letter?

There's a lot of 'J' names in our family for boys. We're now expecting again and I just wondered if it's a bit odd to have another 'J' if it's a boy? I genuinely can't decide on a name this time, and need somewhere to start! I want something simple, and quite like shortened versions of names as full name (eg son is Joe, not Joseph) but hubby wants another J name.

I think it's really naff personally.

I don't think its naff if the initials of your favourite names should just happen to be the same. It's naff if you try and manipulate ways of having the same inititials (such as Jinger Duggar!).

Admittedly, the wider world won't know which way round it is.

FunkyPeacock · 15/04/2015 08:08

Me and my brother have the same initial letter and no middle name to differentiate

I don't ever recall it being a problem - I mean seriously how much post do children receive? And when I was at the age when I did get occasional letters (remember how 'penpals' were a thing in the 70s/80s? ) I am pretty such most people tend to write your full name on the envelope

Looking back are names were very matchy and could probably be classes as a twee combination now but I don't honestly recall it ever being an issue or people commenting on it

It's not just when they're children though is it? The days of kids leaving home when they're 18 are long gone. These kids will be living with their parents into their 40's adulthood. Adults get quite a lot of letters, some of which are personal. I don't think we're talking about letters from Blue Peter or your penfriend, more stuff from the doctor/bank/work.

Although, having said that, letters will probably be a thing of the past by the time these kids are adults anyway.

We still receive all our adult DCs post as they are still moving about from house to house whilst they are at Uni. DS1 and DH have the same first initial but a different initial for their middle name - we still occasionally get their post confused. Some companies only use their first initial. Daft really.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 15/04/2015 09:54

2 of 3 of my DC have the same initial. I regret it a bit because the nicknames of DD2 are very limited because it's too confusing if they sound similar to older child's name/nickname

With a Joe I'd avoid anything else that might be shortened t o Joe sounds - like Jonah

There are loads of girls' names beginning with J though so I really don't see why the Duggars had to go for Jinger. I mean, surely if they were that wedded to J initials they could have found something that was a proper name - Julia, Jasmine, Jacqueline, Judith...

Personally not keen on matchy initials as it can seem a bit twee, but they won't live together forever so it's not really terribly important.

I know a few families whose first names all start with the same letter, I don't think this is a bad thing except for one family I know well whose names all begin with the same letter INCLUDING middle names. They've just had a third, their second DD, and her first and second names differ from her sister's by 2 letters . Eg Sarah Anna and Sara Anne. They really are that similar. They are lovely names but imo far too alike. I think it's a good thing there's a 10 year age gap so they won't be at the same school at the same time.

Fattycow · 15/04/2015 20:25

Post is a problem. As I am quite a few years older than my sibling I share the initial with, I was getting adult mail when he was still little. It is not great to have your parents opening your bank statements and such when you are 18, because they think the letter is for their young child.
Once they opened a letter from the gp. My brother had been in for something minor, but they expected a letter about it. I had been to the gp for std testing and was waiting for my results. Imagine how nice it was when my dad opened the letter that was meant for me...

FunkyPeacock · 16/04/2015 08:18

Yes, fair point Outraged, me and my Bro had both pretty much left home at 18 so less of a problem. It perhaps helped that we weren't same gender too so any post probably said Miss J Smith or Mr J Smith - would be more confusion if both siblings same sex I imagine

Oh well, I was only reporting my own experience and I have genuinely never felt it was an issue that I share the same initial as my sibling

Linguaphile · 17/04/2015 17:39

I know two families with all J names for their children. Both families have more than 10 kids and homeschool... so you might accidentally associating with a certain demographic iyswim.

BellMcEnd · 17/04/2015 21:21

But is there a Jinger, Linguaphile?Wink

Linguaphile · 19/04/2015 17:07

Lol, thankfully no Jingers among them. There are a surprising number of normal J names to choose from, you'd think they could have done a bit better for the poor girl!
