A boys' name to rival Huckleberry

BotBotticelli · 31/03/2015 20:32

A friend at work has a little boy called Huckleberry (known as Huck).

I LOVE it but obviously can't copy it, as it's SO unique.

Can anyone think of any 'similarly' out-there but cute/cool names for boys?? Ds2 is due in the summer and I am struggling with an awesome, strong, interesting, unique name for him.

Interested in names from nature, literature, don't mind surnames-as-forenames in some cases...just something that stands out a bit from the kings and saints...

I DONT like: the trend for old-man names, or boys' names that sound too soft/feminine (I would put things like Robin, Caspar into this camp).

Help! Any ideas! What's the most awesome boys name you've ever heard??

" How about John, David, Steven, Andrew, Michael."

Somebody said these names were "overused". Well, I know 1 John under 30- and not one of any of the others. So if it's unusual you're looking for.......Grin

BubGal13 · 02/04/2015 14:26

Hakluyt sadly I think quite a few would find a lot of the examples of fabulous/ creative/quirky/great people you listed are anything but...

It's not having a wacky name that makes a person original and creative. It's what they do with their lives.

Some absolute shockers of names here, hope some of these posts are light hearted. Why do people give their children cringeworthy embarrassing names like Huckleberry or Orlando. How about John, David, Steven, Andrew, Michael.

The thing is though, unusual names are the current trend, so little Huckleberry and Orlando are growing up with Atticus, Bramwell, Bowie, Dante, Eddison and Holden (I know someone with a baby Holden too. Hmm). They won't bat an eyelid at unusual names as they will be the norm. I'm not sure they will date either, as I suspect unusual names will just become a normal thing as there is always something else to use so the trend has a longer life span than perhaps others have.

This is where those of you who scoff at unusual names start to sound old and not with the times.

DS has an unusual name. I was worried and nearly thought twice about it, however since he was born I've already come across an Ophelia and a Lennox and I don't tend to socialise a great deal.

As its Easter it would be in bad taste to suggest:

      JESUS
pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 02/04/2015 15:10

Spuffington

Polycarp

theendoftheendoftheend · 02/04/2015 15:13

Orlando is an old family name for us, I really want to use it if I have a boy!

Huckleberry Confused

Makes me think of a country yokel in dungarees chewing on a stalk of wheat

Hakluyt · 02/04/2015 15:37

I was the founder member of a now defunct club called The Little Sisters of St Polycarp............

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2015 15:40

Jesus is incredibly popular in Spanish speaking countries.

Irony is the majority of familiar names would have been unusual at some point in the past. There would have been someone somewhere pulling their face at Claire, Sheila, Tracy etc.

I came across an awesome 18th century name the other day - Nutcombe Quick. He appears to have liked his name so much he changed it to Nutcombe Nutcombe.

I'll bet there aren't many, if ANY Nutcombes out there, possibly for good reason Grin. I wish I could say the same for the Huckleberrys and Melchiors and Heaven knows what else, but if you want something unique you're welcome to it!

Hakluyt · 02/04/2015 15:56

My mother wanted to call me an incredibly unusual name but was talked out of it by her family and friends because it was so dowdy and old fashioned and boring- the name was Emily!

dangerrabbit · 02/04/2015 16:02

OP, have you made a name decision? Want to share?

Nutcombe is just outside Haslemere, in Surrey. It's that valley where the A3 tunnel comes out, iirc.

I don't give two hoots what other people call their children. However, when those of us who stuck to classic names are told that this makes us and our children bland, boring and unoriginal it is perhaps not surprising that we are a little bit riled.

Also, what's so awful about being old and not with the times? I'm 53 and I've never been with the times, at any point in my life. I have never had any inclination to follow the pack.

Awks · 02/04/2015 16:12

What did Zowie Bowie change his name to just saying

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/04/2015 16:15

Duncan Jones. Easter Grin

GatoradeMeBitch · 02/04/2015 16:16

And Keith Richard's daughter changed her name from Dandelion to Angela! Having said that, people seem to like more unique names these days. I would be careful about Haydn though OP, it's on a par with Jayden around here - lots of little Haydens, Aidens and Jaydens about! John would be a very original choice in my town!

This is spooky. Since posting on this thread, a friend has arrived for the weekend and was just talking about her friend who had just had a baby...

...with the middle name Huckleberry.

Weird.
