A boys' name to rival Huckleberry

BotBotticelli · 31/03/2015 20:32

A friend at work has a little boy called Huckleberry (known as Huck).

I LOVE it but obviously can't copy it, as it's SO unique.

Can anyone think of any 'similarly' out-there but cute/cool names for boys?? Ds2 is due in the summer and I am struggling with an awesome, strong, interesting, unique name for him.

Interested in names from nature, literature, don't mind surnames-as-forenames in some cases...just something that stands out a bit from the kings and saints...

I DONT like: the trend for old-man names, or boys' names that sound too soft/feminine (I would put things like Robin, Caspar into this camp).

Help! Any ideas! What's the most awesome boys name you've ever heard??

The OP's elder son is called Keir. Very, very few of the names suggested on this thread would sound OK with Keir.

How about Karl (for Marx)?

DingleberryFinn · 03/04/2015 22:38

Keir is interesting. Depending on the area the OP is from it's either one syllable "keer" or two, "key-er". Entirely depends on the regional accent but possibly (probably?) has a bearing on the name for DC2.

Anyway, I'll chuck Cole into the mix.

Cornelius im sure the nn was Corey. I think I read that somewhere or maybe I've made it up.

bluewisteria · 03/04/2015 23:07

Ah ok, thanks Vixx, Cornelius/Corey and Keir?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/04/2015 00:32

Graydon. I only know of one.

stormyboots · 04/04/2015 17:15

Bear Grylls has a son called Huckleberry maybe that's the inspiration behind name

His other son's are called Jesse and Marmaduke

Carrie5608 · 04/04/2015 18:02

I have come across both Thornton and thornbury as first names. The nn is Thor I think.

Dh is suggesting Clarkson after Jeremy nn Clarkie. Hmm

callow · 04/04/2015 18:13

Archer, it was my grandfather's name.

bigfam · 04/04/2015 18:31

Callow. Love archer (I've stolen it for future use)

BunnyCake · 05/04/2015 00:42

I actually genuinely like Clement (Clem) and it goes with Keir.

Less seriously:
Sacheverell
Cadwaller
Kublai

CityDweller · 09/04/2015 21:57

a friend's DS is Dashiell - Dash for short. Love it. They're American though and think it works a bit better in that cultural context

mathanxiety · 09/04/2015 22:07

I love Clement too.

BotBotticelli · 09/04/2015 22:24

Been away from this board for a few days. Love to see that this thread is rumbling on - I have created a beast!

I pronounce ds1's name 'Keer' to rhyme with steer...but a lot of people locally where I live in London do say it more like Kia (the car brand!).

I agree: a lot of the more froufrou elaborate names on this thread don't really work with Keir...we need something unusual and striking but also strong and simple (like Keir!)...

I will have a quick scan back through the thread now and pull out my favourites so far...

I like Marlowe, Ellis, Archer, Huxley...

Hi OP watching this thread as I need to steal a middle name for DS2 who will be called Jude.
My OH is called Keir and my DS1 is called Elis. (Very fine names indeed ;))
Good luck with choosing a name.
xx

dragdownthemoon · 11/04/2015 18:23

Mordecai

Bellabutterfly2014 · 13/04/2015 18:17

Someone I worked with called their little boy Caesar! Yes as in the dog food - or julius (Shakespeare) but think of the poor kid when he starts school!

BakingBunty · 13/04/2015 20:18

I have a Huckleberry! Well, it's his middle name... I was talked out of it as his first name...

Other names I liked:

Gus
Fox
Woodrow
Herbie
Miller
Ned
Rex

BotBotticelli · 13/04/2015 20:23

Thanks all! madamacadamia I am not keen on the old English names but my oh loves them...!

purplepolkadot thanks for your suggestions - you're definitely along the right lines . I like Logan and Callan from your list but think you'd spend a lifetime saying Callan, not Callum (although I spend a lot of time now say Keir, not Kian, so what's one more I guess?!).

I also really like Flynn. We were considering Finn when I was pregnant last time with ds1 but were turned off by how popular it was becoming. Flynn is similar but never met one of those!
