Just a few for starters:
Niamh
Sinéad
Siobhan
Clodagh
Muireann
Roisín
Orla
Laoise
Léiní
Réiltín
Saoirse
Aisling
Aoife

Wolfiefan · 26/03/2015 23:49

Completely off topic! How do you pronounce saoirse?
Love Aoife and Niamh. And Orla and Roisin!

meandjulio · 26/03/2015 23:54

Roisin is my favourite (sorry for no accents) but they're all lovely.

Wolfiefan · 26/03/2015 23:58

Thanks. It is a name that looks lovely on the page but I didn't know how to say it!!

manicinsomniac · 27/03/2015 00:00

Sorcha is my absolute favourite Irish name - if the parents of the one child I've ever met with it pronounced it correctly that is - soh-ruh-kuh?

Also really like Caoimhe, Niamh, Aoife, and Fionnhuala. And Kayleigh but I don't know what the original Irish spelling of that was - Caelie? Caeleidh? Ceilidh?!

Patonthehead · 27/03/2015 00:06

Emer
Maeve
Deirdre
Keelin
Ciara

If you live outside Ireland, I would advise avoiding the undecipherable ones like Sadb, Saoirse, Aoife, Aoibheann, Beibhinn, Eibhlin, Cait, ....

Selks · 27/03/2015 00:14

Oona / Oonagh

linalool · 27/03/2015 00:23

Molly
Kathleen
Rosaleen

Janinec123 · 27/03/2015 13:55

Some lovely suggestions here. We both are from Ireland so we really do like these type names. Just so hard to get "the one"

Fionnhuala is a lovely name. Was she a swan daughter from an Irish story?

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 27/03/2015 14:10

Yes, Poison, she was one of 'The Children of Lir'. I read this story to my DS again a few weeks ago, it always makes me blub, it's so sad Sad

Janinec123 · 28/03/2015 09:33

Any other suggestions out there?

Aisling

CarrieK86 · 28/03/2015 15:39

Orla

TheAuthoress · 28/03/2015 15:50

Do you actually live in ireland? I think it makes a difference as obviously people in ireland will know how to prounounce the names, whereas in England / Scotland / Wales they may not have come across some of the names before.

AFAIK Saoirse is prounounced seer-sha, but I'm in belfast and we seem to have different pronounciations to elsewhere in N. Ireland and presumably S. Ireland too.

My favourite is Maebh (Maeve).

JanineStHubbins · 28/03/2015 15:55

Aoibheann
Doireann
Caoimhe
Bébhinn
Laoise
Ríonagh
Ailbhe
Clíodhna
Siún (I love this one)

ApocalypseThen · 28/03/2015 16:35

My favourite is Siofra. Not allowed to have it, though.

Janinec123 · 28/03/2015 20:08

Yes we are in Ireland. We are in Southern Ireland so people will be well aware on how to pronounce the names. Just so unsure as to what to pick. we found boys easy and are both totally decided on that but girls are so difficult. We do like Aoife but not sure if it's "the one" we like short simple ones but girly. I know it's not irish but just to give you an indication on what type we like. Aoife, Annie, molly, Anna etc just simple girly ones.

Sorry didn't mention we are in Ireland so people should know the names

Aoife is gorgeous IMO!

Jellyrollquiltmom · 28/03/2015 23:07

Grainne
I toyed with the name Cara ( friend in Irish and darling in Italian), but then I remembered it's a brand of matches!

mathanxiety · 30/03/2015 03:36

I don't know what to think about the name Deirdre. It might be like calling your child Phyllis/Gladys/Mavis/Doris...

Manicinsomniac -- YES! It is indeed Soh-ruh-kuh (or Sur-ruh-kha).

Janinec --
I love the name Ailbhe (Alvy). I knew a few in school in the 60s and 70s but you rarely hear the name. Short and sweet and Irish people will have no problems with it.

Fiona is very nice too although not really Irish.
Iona is also nice imo and again Scottish, but would be nice in Ireland.

How about:
Muireann
Muirne
Aine
Neasa (or Nessa)
Caoimhe
Eithne pronounced Enya
Nora

LadyGregory · 30/03/2015 11:55

Ailbhe is lively and underused. Aoibheann, Sadbh, Meabh, Orlaith, Siofra, Siun, Caoilfhionn, Caoimhe?

BonnieBeaumont · 31/03/2015 23:46

Have you considered Áine if you like Anna and Annie?

mswibble · 31/03/2015 23:51

The Irish pronunciation of Deirdre is much nicer than here in the UK. Its Deer-dra, not Deer-dree.

Orla is my fave, thats what I would have gone for had my bump been a girl.
