Will I regret it??

Baby number 1 due in 5 weeks. Not knowing the sex is not the issue. All along I have had a name picked out for a girl (my maiden name) I love it as a name and that it is a family connection. For a boy we initially thought of dh mothers maiden name, Mackenzie. At times I love this name and other times all I can think of is the clothing brand. We have also suggested Lucas which at the mo I love more, dh suggested it but our surname begins with L. And he thinks the aliteration sounds funny. Which would you choose? Or is it best to wait till the big day and see if our bump is a boy and see which one suits more??

Lucas is lovely Smile .

And alliteration is nice. My DD had a alliterative name. Like Dotty McDonald (but cuter Grin ).

Mackenzie is awful. Really really really awful.

funnyface31 · 10/03/2015 09:26

I much preferably Lucas to McKenzie.

pinkyredrose · 10/03/2015 09:27

Are you American?

6LittleOnes · 10/03/2015 09:31

I like McKenzie. Personally I wouldn't choose an alliterative name

Bowlersarm · 10/03/2015 09:33

Lucas. By far.

Lucas is lovely. It was on our (very) short list of possible boys' names had DD turned out to be DS3.

The only McKenzie I know of in RL is a girl, so unsure how it would sound on a boy. Possibly better if you are Scottish?

usernamefeefifoe · 10/03/2015 09:40

Nope not American .I'm irish, dh Scottish hence the name Mackenzie, living in Wales. I just think since I'm having a wobble about it now will I always think that way. I do rather Lucas but need to tread softly so feelings don't get hurt. X

Mackenzie is not a nice name. Lucas is lovely

Lancelottie · 10/03/2015 09:43

Lucas Mackenzie Username. Job done.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 10/03/2015 09:43

And as for the alliterative names - I think it depends on how easy the combination of names is to say.

For example, Lucas Lloyd would be absolutely fine. Lucas Lewis I might have to think about a bit more (although ultimately I'd probably still go with it Smile).

Lancelottie · 10/03/2015 09:43

(I know one girl and one boy Mackenzie, both nice kids, so it sounds fine to me.)

GoooRooo · 10/03/2015 09:44

I like Mackenzie. I also like the idea of using a maiden name as a first name, but I am biased as I used my mother's maiden name as my son's name.

SpooneriseShinyTights · 10/03/2015 09:45

Mackenzie doesn't sound like a celtic name to me (Irish too). It sounds like a horrible One Tree Hill type American teenager. It's mostly a girls name in the US as well. I've seen Mackenzie, Macauley and Mckenna used as first names for baby girls. It's a hideous trend.

Lucas is a fantastic classic name.

ShadowSpiral · 10/03/2015 09:46

Personally i prefer Lucas to McKenzie.

But the only McKenzie I know is a boy, so I don't think of it as a girl's name.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 10/03/2015 09:46

Ahh, now being an Irish/Scottish family makes me think that Mackenzie could work.

When all said and done though, you need to pick whichever name you feel the most comfortable with. You (and your DC) will be saying it umpteen times a day for the rest of your life. It's better to approach the subject with DH now, than have a lifetime of name regret.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 10/03/2015 09:59

I like Mackensie, but sadly he will be called Mac. Macaroni, Macadoodle, Maccy, all kinds.

Lucas is lovely but difficult to say if it works with your surname.

Sophronia · 10/03/2015 10:00

I much prefer Lucas.

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2015 10:04

To me, Lucas is much nicer.

As a pp said, Mackenzie would make a great middle name - Lucas Mackenzie Surname.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 10/03/2015 10:06

Lucas Mackenzie is nice.

I am curious as to what your girls name is though!

MsBug · 10/03/2015 10:12

Another vote for Lucas with Mackenzie as a middle name.

RatMort · 10/03/2015 10:21

Exactly what Spooner said. I'm Irish too, and Mackenzie also makes me think 'dimwit Californian teenager on high school TV show who says 'like' a lot' rather than Irish/Scottish tribute. Lucas Mackenzie Surname would be lovely.

WindYourBobbinUp · 10/03/2015 10:26

I don't like McKenzie, sorry. Lucas is lovely but very popular (if that matters?)

usernamefeefifoe · 10/03/2015 11:23

It is a Scottish tradition to have the mothers maiden name as a middle name as my dh has. So Lucas Mackenzie would work and I do like it but I suppose it's conversation time with dh to let him know what I'm thinking. I think pre baby it was a lovely idea to use both surnames as first name but when it comes down to it you start to think differently. I've never really liked my own name so I've just realised what an epic job it is. If we have a girl we would like to call her Darcy (haven't decided on spelling yet but won't be spelt the same as my maiden name D'Arcy - I like Rose as a second name) thanks for all your opinions it's good to hear what others think as we haven't told anyone else names that we are thinking of, and strangers seem to tell the truth a little but more!

I have a Scottish colleague who has used the middle name Mckenzie for both his children, one boy and one girl, because of the mother's maiden name tradition. I think it's a nice link.

I like Mackenzie as a first name too. Probably prefer it for a girl but good either way. Lucas I also like.
