Baby number 1 due in 5 weeks. Not knowing the sex is not the issue. All along I have had a name picked out for a girl (my maiden name) I love it as a name and that it is a family connection. For a boy we initially thought of dh mothers maiden name, Mackenzie. At times I love this name and other times all I can think of is the clothing brand. We have also suggested Lucas which at the mo I love more, dh suggested it but our surname begins with L. And he thinks the aliteration sounds funny. Which would you choose? Or is it best to wait till the big day and see if our bump is a boy and see which one suits more??

Darcy is a unisex name no?
I like Mackenzie. We all have rooted associations with some names. But in th end I think most can be replaced (Adolph, Jesus, blanket, come to mind as exceptions). So once people get to know you lovely son he will be the reference for his name.

TywysogesGymraeg · 10/03/2015 15:03

Surnames used as first names are all awful, IMO. Don't do it OP!!! Don't like Darcy much as a name either (sorry Sad)

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 10/03/2015 15:14

Lucas definitely.

I know a lovely little Darcey Smile

heylilbunny · 12/03/2015 21:33

I definitely think of McKenzie as a girl's name. My godson is Macnamara - he is named after his grandmother's maiden name - goes by Mac.

BunnyCake · 15/03/2015 08:38

My grandmother was Scottish and my dad has her maiden name as a middle name.

KatieKaye · 15/03/2015 08:48

As the prefix "Mac" means "son of", it seems strange to give a girl that type of name...

Regardless of that, Mackenzie does come across as very US teen TV. It does work as a middle name though.

Lucas is classic and cool.

slanleat · 15/03/2015 10:59

I am going against the trend and saying I prefer Mackenzie to Lucas by miles! I can however picture him being called Mack - which I openly admit to liking too!

Can't say I like Lucas at all.

Somehow I feel that when you see your little one you will know which names work.

dancemom · 15/03/2015 11:04

Mackenzie would be shortened to Kenzie straight away!

Mackenzie is more used as a girls name currently also.

dancemom · 15/03/2015 11:04

Prefer Luca to Lucas also

Luca Mackenzie L......

daholster · 15/03/2015 14:27

Love Darcey Smile

daholster · 15/03/2015 14:29

Oh and I vote for wait and see what he looks like... My daughter looked nothing like our top name and we changed it, her name suits her totally (though I imagine she'd have grown into either, it just didn't feel right when she didn't look like at all like we imagined a Felicity!!!)

switchitoff · 15/03/2015 15:21

If you like the nn "Mac" but have gone off MacKenzie, how about Cormac as an alternative?

I agree that MacKenzie has rather unfortunate associations; and it's much more commonly a girl's name anyway.

Lucas is lovely, but if you have a surname beginning with L, make sure it still sounds OK if he ends up being called Luke / Loo / Luca / Louis.

TrickyKid · 15/03/2015 15:24

Lucas is lovely,Mackenzie is awful.

rockinrobintweet · 15/03/2015 20:43

Lucas every time!

TheNewStatesman · 16/03/2015 02:43

I would avoid Mackenzie because it is usually used as a girl's name in the US.

CheerfulYank · 16/03/2015 02:51

I'm american and know so many MacKenzies who are girls. :) It's not so popular now...they're all about 10+.

I say go for Lucas Mackenzie. It's nice! :)

blowinahoolie · 23/03/2015 16:55

I don't like Mackenzie. I do like Lucas though.

fallenstar27 · 24/03/2015 22:15

I like both names but prefer Lucas.

To be honest I'm only commenting to giggle at the irony of a PP saying Mackenzie sounded like some horrible American teen from One Tree Hill when the lead character in that programme was called Lucas...

spiderlight · 25/03/2015 11:52

Lancelottie Your post reminded me so much of my DS when he started Reception. He made friends with a little boy called Mackenzie but there was a little girl with the sane name in the class, and literally every time he mentioned his friend for about a year, he referred to him as 'Mackenzie - the-boy-Mackenzie-not-the-girl-Mackenzie.' I was quite relieved when 'the girl Mackenzie' moved schools!

spiderlight · 25/03/2015 11:53

Forgot to say - I like both names but Lucas is more classic and alliteration shouldn't matter hugely. My DS has an alliterative name, which we agonised about, but it flows well and we so rarely say it in full out loud that it really doesn't matter.

forago · 25/03/2015 11:56

Call him Mack or Cormac if a boy, would be my advise.

Mack is a great name, but I am biased.

DextersMistress · 25/03/2015 12:01

Lucas is lovely but then I'm biased as there is one sitting next to me eating chocolate biscuits Smile
Also like Darcy!
