What do we think of August for a boy?

Maybe a bit premature to discuss, at only 11 weeks, but we are expecting baby #7, and as I already have 5 boys and one girl, I am going to go ahead and assume this one will be another boy. I have used pretty much every boy name that I love, and am having a hard time getting fired up about any others.

I like Reuben, Felix and Gideon, and just recently thought of August as well. DH and I got married in August, but baby would be born in September. I like Gus as a nn too. I don't know. Most month names are for girls, so I wonder if people will feel it is feminine at all? I need inspiration, reassurance, something! I would like probable boy #6 to not have a meaningless, we had to call you something, name. Thanks all in advance.

I like August and it is traditionaly a roman masculin name, what About Augustus? Seems more of a man's name.

NaughtyRed82 · 09/03/2015 03:49

If I saw the name written down it something I would assume it's a female name, like you said month names are usually for females like April, May and June and also Summer and Autumn are used for girls name for time of year rather than the month, can't think of the top of my head if boys names to do with months or time of year.
August is the horoscope sign of Leo though if like Leo to tie in with the month of August.......

StrawberryMojito · 09/03/2015 04:00

Yes, it's a feminine name. I like the pp suggestions of Augustus or Leo as alternatives.

From your list, I like Felix and Reuben, not so keen on Gideon.

What about Rex, Nathaniel (Nate), Sebastian, Jonah, Jude. I wouldn't get too het up over meaning, he's got to carry it through life so go for one that sounds good.

Gugglebum · 09/03/2015 04:11

Thanks for the suggestions and comments. One syllable names are out since our surname is one syllable, and oddly hard for people to pronounce correctly. Had also considered Augustus, and that's a possibility. Leo would rhyme with an already existing brother. Smile

August is fine, I think, and definitely not a girls name (the feminine being the well known Augusta - a PG Wodehouse aunt)

Augustus is ok (but another Wodehouse association - Gussie Finknottle the newt lover)

madwomanbackintheattic · 09/03/2015 05:09

August is the main character in 'Wonder'. I assumed you had read it and thought it was an odd choice if so, but I guess not. Male in this case, but gets shortened to 'Auggie'.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 09/03/2015 06:52

It's awful, very pretensions.

MaudeTheMopLady · 09/03/2015 07:27

I like it, but maybe it would be confusing if it's not an August birthday? I really like Augusti and Augustine too. I love the nickname Gus and you could just go for this as a name if you like it?

Littleturkish · 09/03/2015 07:31

Augustine is nice for a boy.

dyzzidi · 09/03/2015 07:34

What about Austin ?

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 09/03/2015 10:22

Not to my taste really. I prefer Fergus or Angus.

PrimalLass · 09/03/2015 10:31

I think it's awful - sorry.

Leeds2 · 09/03/2015 10:31

Prefer Augustus to August. August sounds like a girls' name to me, and I think it would be an odd name for a boy or girl who was actually born in September.

GingerLDN · 09/03/2015 10:33

All I think of is Augustus Gloop from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

abyssiniam8 · 09/03/2015 10:35

Sorry i don't like it. It reminds me of the film August Rush were they got his name from the side of a bus.

And August being born in September - kids can be mean to each other...

IsadoraQuagmire · 09/03/2015 10:59

The first person I think of is August Strindberg because I love Miss Julie Smile I think it's a great name.

Twinklestein · 09/03/2015 15:00

Yeah why not. It's unusual. But he will get called 'Augie' which is a bit grim.

Augustus would be fine if it were 1905.

Sophronia · 09/03/2015 15:16

I like August and I see it as a boys name.

Viviennemary · 09/03/2015 15:19

I wouldn't see it as a name at all. And certainly not a boys name. I think you should reconsider. Why do people want to saddle their DCs with those outlandish names.

Allstoppedup · 09/03/2015 15:20

I like it and I love the nn Auggie. (Pronounced more like Oggy).

Very cute. It's already sneaked onto my list for DC2!

Sortmylifeout · 09/03/2015 15:22

Don't like it at all. Never heard it either.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2015 15:23

August just sounds like a month. I think it would be a little odd given your baby is due in September and may well lead to a fair few oh-so-funny jokes of "were you late? Hahahahaha"

Augustus is better, although mot to my taste, but I still think I would avoid it for a baby due in either July or September.

Fleecyleesy · 09/03/2015 15:25

It's a Scandi name isn't it? It sounds nice and works there but I'm not sure it would work so well in the UK.

Madamecastafiore · 09/03/2015 15:25

I like Gus but Augustus would make me think of the fat kid from C&TCF.
