Amelia / Emilia-how many do you know?

Bobian123 · 03/03/2015 16:37

DD due in July and the front runner name at the mo is Amelia.

I have two questions!
Firstly, how many little Amelias do you know? It topped the name poll the last couple of years but has dropped (only a bit) recently. I'm wondering if/hoping the burst of popularity will have put people off it? I don't overly care, but guess I'd prefer her not to be one of four in her class for example.

Secondly, I prefer the nickname Emmie to Millie and therefore quite like Emilia. Does it sound a bit "trying to be different" or is it justifiably a name in its own right?

Thanks so much

Thanks so much for all your replies! Sounds like the name, and all similar variations, are very popular. I just wonder if, like a pp said, names go in waves so Amelia/emilia might be given a rest now...wishful thinking! X

I know tons of the other variations but not one Emmeline.

I adore it. Really beautiful.

Your preferred nickname works well too. (and avoids the Mia/Mila/Mimi ending which cuts out a lot of duplicate classmates!)

Never met an Emilia. In the last few years I've known two Amelias (one known as Millie, one not) and two Amelies, and also a little girl who is "just" Millie.

You might find with Emmy that people hear it as Amy a lot...

I have an Amelia, born 2003 (she's in year 6). There are no other Amelia's or variations of, in her school. We live on the England/Wales border. When we lived in London a few years back and there was a Lithuanian girl called emilja in the reception class.

I've actually lost count of the amount we know, they are everywhere (SE). Most of the time with the middle name Rose. Most have the nn Milly/Millie.

Personally I can't stand the name, to my ears it sound very whiny Ah-meeeeel-ia.

My niece is due in 4 weeks and she will be a Amelia.

I also know 2 others

Marcipex · 10/03/2015 23:04

Several if you include Amelie with Amelia.

None spelt Emilia.

resipsa · 11/03/2015 08:56

My DD (4) and 1 other (3). I know a lot of under 5s. It's not as 'common' as touted on MN. Anyway, if you like it, who cares? Grin

peutetre · 11/03/2015 10:06

Has to be the most overused name around at the moment.

BubbleGuppie · 11/03/2015 10:26

Personally I think its the new Lilly may... When I was pregnant 4 Years ago I was going to call my now son Lilly may and so glad I didnt have a girl, I know 9 of them and 4 are in my sons class! It went from Lilly may to Amelia Lilly and now there Amelia everywhere (im in Leicester, UK) I know 6 all under 3 but I only know one emelia (my cousin 16)

runningandjumping · 11/03/2015 10:49

A lot of Amelias, just one Emilia, a couple of Amelies and an AWFUL LOT of Emilys

Idoitforthelove · 14/03/2015 16:28

I have a 10 month old Amelia and was in exactly your position before she was born.
Mumsnet desperately tried to convince me to name her Emilia or Amelie due to the supposedly extreme popularity, and I really seriously considered it.
Since naming her Amelia, I've met 4 Amelie's and 2 Emilia's but no other Amelia's.
People always comment on her name and how lovely it is. The people who dislike it (above!) are the Martha, Alice, Tabitha brigade...!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 14/03/2015 22:02

None !

Orangeisthenewbanana · 14/03/2015 22:09

Two with A, one with E.

burgatroyd · 16/03/2015 04:08

I would avoid.

I mean, its lovely but sooooo popular.

How about:

Amandine
Emerald
Eleni
Lorelei
Lucetta
Idony

burgatroyd · 16/03/2015 04:09

Actually I'd pick a name lower than the top 200 e.g Bianca

burgatroyd · 16/03/2015 04:11

Emilia doesnt have the medical connotation of Amelia

BikeRunSki · 16/03/2015 07:24

1 Emilia, about 8
1 Amelia, 6
A further 5or 6 Amelias who are 3 or 4.

Boomf · 16/03/2015 07:42

It has a not very pleasant medical meaning which makes me wonder why people use it as a name. It sounds whiny to my ears anyway

KnittingSticks · 16/03/2015 16:27

The people who dislike it (above!) are the Martha, Alice, Tabitha brigade...!
Not true.

stormyboots · 17/03/2015 15:03

i know 3 Amelia's and 1 Amelie all under 4.
Personally i would never choose a girl's name in the top 10 no matter how much i liked it as i wouldn't like everyone else having it :D also there are so many beautiful girls names to choose from why all have the same.

I use to love the name Isabelle/a but it has completely lost its appeal to me as there are so many around. I think that's what happens when a name is everywhere, you stop hearing the name and see only the popularity,if that makes sense.
