Amelia / Emilia-how many do you know?

Bobian123 · 03/03/2015 16:37

DD due in July and the front runner name at the mo is Amelia.

I have two questions!
Firstly, how many little Amelias do you know? It topped the name poll the last couple of years but has dropped (only a bit) recently. I'm wondering if/hoping the burst of popularity will have put people off it? I don't overly care, but guess I'd prefer her not to be one of four in her class for example.

Secondly, I prefer the nickname Emmie to Millie and therefore quite like Emilia. Does it sound a bit "trying to be different" or is it justifiably a name in its own right?

Thanks so much

I don't know any.

ragged · 04/03/2015 09:18

I am not fan of any but Millie.
I know 1 each: Emilia (Milly), Amelie (Milly) & Amelia (just that).
Plus an Emmie which isn't short for anything.

PercyGherkin · 04/03/2015 09:24

My son has 2 Es and 1 A in his class (Yr 1).

mandy214 · 04/03/2015 09:25

DD (9) 1 x Amelia in her class, 1 x Emilia

DD (5) 2 x Amelia, 1 x Amelie.

Its quite a common name. If you like the name, then go for it, but be aware that she probably will be 1 of several with the same name.

ChickenMe · 04/03/2015 10:26

Two Amelies
One Amelia

Emilia is nice but unfortunately sounds almost the same as the uber popular Amelia

florascotia · 04/03/2015 10:46

IF it matters, Emilia is ancient Roman in origin (it was a family name) and was used by Shakespeare. Emily has the same origins.

Amelia and Amalia are versions of an old Germanic name, based on a word maning 'work'.

3E aged 0-3
6A aged 0-3
4 Amelie's mostly aged 3-4

Rox19 · 04/03/2015 10:51

Oh yes and 2 Amalie aged 1-2

Username12345 · 04/03/2015 11:24

I know 2 with an A 0 with an E.

CarlaVeloso · 04/03/2015 11:28

I know an Emilia whose parents considered changing the name to Amelia because that's what everyone seems to hear and call her. It is much prettier but yes, together, they are very popular now.

Only1scoop · 04/03/2015 11:32

3 Amelia's and 2 Emilias ....seems to be the new twist

amy0787 · 04/03/2015 12:11

I know of two Amelia's but non at the kids pre school and one Emilia who lives miles away. I love Emilia but am also put of by the popularity of Amelia, despite not knowing too many myself. debating wether to use anyway or go for emmeline instead.
Eva, Evie, Ella are much more popular amongst the children I know.

Bobian123 · 04/03/2015 12:29

I don't actually know any myself so it's really interesting to hear how many seem to be out there! I agree that Emilia/Amelia will essentially sound exactly the same - it was more the nickname of Emmie I preferred.

Amy - also love the name Emmeline. Just thought she'd be constantly misheard as Emily! Choosing a name is so hard!

My Emilia (nn Emmy) is 11 months. I love it Grin

LittleMissRayofHope · 04/03/2015 12:34

I know 2 Amelia's, 1 Emilia and 1 Amilie.

I only know one nickname as she is my friends dd but we all call her 'Me Me' for short (I'm sure it's not spelling that way!!)

I think they are all beautiful names.
I will state though that of these 4 children not one set of parents are English. It seems to be a European name from my experience.

Thurlow · 04/03/2015 12:39

Lots around our way. Several Amelia's, at least two Amelie's, and one Emilia I've heard of. Most of the Amelia's seem to have become Mia's as a nn, though that seems to have grown out of how small children can't say the whole name.

gaggiagirl · 04/03/2015 12:42

Every female child in this county (slight exaggeration) is called Amelia/Emilia/Amelie/Emelie and the varients thereof.
In my job I get to see that there are at least two born every day.

Tea1Sugar · 04/03/2015 12:50

Baby names suggests Amelia is #5 and Emilia #53.

I know two Amelias personally, but have taught lots more (I can think of at least seven in the two-form entry school I currently teach in).

Bear in mind that it's not just Amelia/Emilia - there are lots of similar-sounding names that are popular at the moment (Amelie, Emily, Millie, Mia, Amy, Emmy, Emmeline). Even if there isn't another Amelia, the likelihood is that there'll be several of these 'types' of names in the class.
My current class has one Amelia, two Mias, an Emily and an Emilie!

amy0787 · 04/03/2015 15:47

Quite surprised tempspurdu you class Emmeline as a popular name, I didn't think it was even in the top 100. Do people know a lot of Emmeline's too then?

IsadoraQuagmire · 04/03/2015 15:56

Amelia is my middle name and my grandmother's name (known as Millie)
I know one another Amelia at the moment, and two Emilias.
I think they're all lovely, also love the Latin form Aemilia.

TempsPerdu · 04/03/2015 16:19

Amy0787 Emmeline is nowhere near as popular as the others I mentioned (not in top 100), but I'm suddenly seeing quite a few in the younger years of the schools I've been in. I can think of four in the past couple of years - all in London. Think people are looking for alternatives to Amelia/Emily etc.

Reminds me of when Amelie began to take off in a big way (because of the film and as another alternative to Amelia). Now Elodie is getting popular too, as people are looking for an alternative to Amelie! Similar names seem to go in waves.

heliotrope · 04/03/2015 16:24

I think I only know 1 five year old Amelia, and one Emilia in ds reception class. In London. Sometimes the popularity figures don't ring that true, there must be pockets of them and in other areas more wide variety of names are used.

You can still use it, check out the darkgreener baby names site to see the actual % of babies given the name. 0.8% in 2013. And maybe on the wane. It depends howuch it would annoy you if there is another at nursery / school. Hard to predict anyway, I chose a rare boy name which now 5years later is on that thread about the most heard names!

LastNightADJSavedMyLife · 04/03/2015 16:24

I have an Amelia who is 6 and know another at her sister's nursery.

I know 2 Amelie's , 2 Emily's, a shed load of Isabelle/Isobel/Isabella's, couple of Mia's.

We thought of Emilia but decided that it would result in too much "No E-milia not A-melia"
