Anyone know lots of them? A friend's partner is named Marit, and I've just realised how much I love it. It seems that the Scandis have lovely names that are feminine, without being soft.

Interesting! thanks all. Not quite what I was expecting. I think lots of the ones here are more feminine than I would prefer.

Hilariously my own name has turned up! Grin

Unusual things like Unnur are what I'm interested to hear. These sounds that haven't been incorporated into our own naming traditions.

Names like Astrid and Ingrid I find I associate with very rah families, rightly or wrongly! the sounds are not what I'm looking for....not sure why. Thinking about it, I'm not keen on the Rs! yes I know I am absurd Grin

Thanks for the link Hazle. I like Ines and Agnes actually. And the ones less familiar to me, like Signe and Lykke, though I don't know how to pronounce them! Blush

Scary is Rie reeyuh?

Not sure of spelling but friend has daughter called ....what sounds like Ohna not sure of spelling though.

Always think how nice it sounds

florascotia · 21/02/2015 10:57

I like Pernille/Pernilla as already suggested. But what about:

Silke (Zeel-kah) = a short form of Cecilia

Line (pron. 'Lee-neh')

If people still remember 'AlloAllo', then perhaps Helga is a non-starter. But othewise, it's a good strong sound. So is Olga (the two are versions of the same name).

I once met a Danish woman called Rie (pron. 'Ree') - it was her preferred nn for 'Anne-Marie', but that may have been a one-off.

The swedes are heavily into granny names, you will find that the rolecall list at nursery reads exactly like the nursery home lists at the moment.
