Girls Name - sigh...

I know they are both really boring, but we've been round the houses with so many names (keep losing out to close friends popping sprogs all around us) and have finally settled on Holly or Rose (Rosie?).

I know Rose is overused but it was my grandmothers name and she died this year. Plus I think Rosie is quite pretty, and although I know a bunch of people who have used it as a middle name, I only know one who has it as a first name and they are not close close friends. My DH is a bit concerned it is an old lady name.

Holly, yes I know some people think it's a December name, but we both like it, and we don't know any at all. My mother won't like it though.. She won't think it's "posh" enough, but I don't suppose that matters. I just worry it isn't very grown up or has much depth for an adult.

I know I don't sound in love with either, but seriously, we have exhausted the name book back to front and don't agree on very much at all. So it's the best we can come up with.

Does anyone have any helpful comments to help me decide? Thanks!

Oh, and I should add that we've been discussing this for nine months and she's due tomorrow!

We wanted Rose as a middle name for DD2 but also felt it was too overused, so we opted for Rosa instead.

Allalonenow · 16/02/2015 00:47

What about Rosalie instead of Rose, just a bit different.

LaceyLee · 16/02/2015 03:25

Rose isn't that common as a first name, Rosie more common. I think rose is an elegant name and you can use Rosie as a nice nickname. Also like Rosanna

Elllimam · 16/02/2015 04:02

I think Rose is actually quite unusual as a first name and very pretty. Holly on the other hand is quite popular where I am.

Wittynamehere · 16/02/2015 04:06

I would try and find something else if you think they are both boring options?
Give us more Ideas on ones you've missed out on using maybe we could come up with alternatives?

Juno213 · 16/02/2015 06:05

You don't need to decide now. You don't even need to decide when she's here for a while. Get to know her a bit and then decide. We chose a name but kept it secret for a bit to check it suited her. I still wish we'd called her Rose but my friend has always said her future dd will be a Rose so I didn't feel like I could.

Nolim · 16/02/2015 06:19

Rose is pretty

afghanda · 16/02/2015 07:18

Rose is lovely and not overused at all. You could always go with a longer version if you fancied it: Roseanne,Rosanna, Rosalind, Rosalie, Rosamund, Roselyn.

angelics · 16/02/2015 07:29

When my daughter was due we wrote all the possible names on a whiteboard in the kitchen and my husband and I crossed off all of the ones we didn't like. Eventually it came down to a choice between Jocelyn or Amber. When she was born she had beautiful Amber hair, so the decision was made.

ScaryChicken · 16/02/2015 07:32

Rose isn't old ladyish! It has never gone out if fashion, but, as others have said, it isn't actually overused right now.

I like both names. I suppose Rose is a bit more "sophisticated" than Holly, but Holly isn't exactly a name that will hold her back from being PM or whatever.. I knew a lovely Holly at Oxford studying law if that helps?

They are both good! Don't stress about it, take a few days and see what suits her.

And good luck xxxx

M1985 · 16/02/2015 07:35

I like Rose, not overly keen on Hollie.
I love Rose for a middle name but we've decided to go for Rosa instead just to be slightly different. I also like Rosalie.

A few other names we have on our list that you might like...
Seren
Violet
Willow
Scarlett
Ivy

ScaryChicken · 16/02/2015 07:36

Oh and

Neither are "boring"

Your mum will have to suck it up (sorry to be crude)

i also like holly dont think its very common either. i know a holly who is lovely.

NancyRaygun · 16/02/2015 07:51

I love both these names. Both flowers/plants so wondering if you might like Clementine, Iris, Ivy?

Lucaslovesfelicity · 16/02/2015 08:29

Rose is lovely for a first name. I am considering using Roselyn as a first name but other names we are considering are Iris, Lillian, Phoebe, Madeleine. Any of those you might like?

Tessietess · 16/02/2015 09:59

I love Rose, I think it's pretty but also elegant. I've heard it a fair bit for middle names but the only baby I've heard of having it as a first name is Scarlett Johannsen's!

squoosh · 16/02/2015 10:58

Rose is lovely and not all that common as a first name. I'm not at all keen on Rosie though, completely kills the elegance of the name.

Sophronia · 16/02/2015 11:15

I really like Rose as a first name.

diddl · 16/02/2015 13:54

The only Rosie I've known was a Rosemary.

I only know one Rose who is now in her 20s.

my fave "Rose" name is Roseline.

looki · 16/02/2015 14:13

Rose is very pretty as a first name. I don't know any and if it wasn't already in the family (as part of a name ), I'd use it for my next baby.

JCPennies · 16/02/2015 14:52

Rose is gorgeous, Holly is nice if a December baby but generally not over keen. Rose is simple and pretty I wouldn't change it one bit.

pilates · 16/02/2015 15:05

I like Rose very much.

BlueChampagne · 16/02/2015 15:48

Rosanne/a, NN Rosie? And there is, of course, the Christmas Rose (Hellebore).

Alyx80 · 16/02/2015 17:34

My dc has a Rosa in his class which I think is lovely.
