Is Buster acceptable?

Just following on from the 'coolest boys name' thread where a few people mentioned Buster, which I (growing up outside of the UK) love ( d ), but which I thought was out of bounds due to its connotations in English speaking countries?

So: is it okay to name your boy Buster or is it still used as a disrespectful term for a boy/ man you don't like?

I love it!

Velvetbee · 09/02/2015 18:51

The bully at my primary school was called Buster - bloody scary.

coalscuttle · 09/02/2015 18:53

Definitely a dogs name

treaclesoda · 09/02/2015 18:55

It makes me think of Buster Bluth from Arrested Development. Grin

canweseethebunnies · 10/02/2015 14:41

I went to school with a Buster. I'm in my thirties. Nobody thought it was that odd I don't think.

TheSitChewAceChien · 10/02/2015 14:47

It's not a great choice imo, sorry!
However it's a fab choice in DS' opinion (he's 8) he went through a phase of telling people his name was Buster. He'd swap his in a second! Grin

brightreddress · 10/02/2015 14:47

No

Edmondswife · 10/02/2015 15:07

You are kidding right? Sorry but I had a dog named Buster...

mathanxiety · 10/02/2015 16:53

I know a chihuahua named Buster.

reuset · 10/02/2015 16:54

Not really. Putting it mildly

MamaLazarou · 10/02/2015 17:54

It's fine, as long as the baby looks like Popeye.

rockinrobintweet · 10/02/2015 21:18

i know 3 boys called Buster. I don't like it myself but actually don't mind it on the particular children. one boy i taught however and if you were calling the child over for a particular reason I did feel like I was beckoning a pet!!

FishCanFly · 18/02/2015 13:09

Most popular dogs name in our area.
Are there no human names left?

Germgirl · 18/02/2015 13:33

I knew a little boy called Bruiser. Buster is tame compared to that. But no, it's not a name for a person I think. Fine as a nickname but not a proper name.

SmallBee · 18/02/2015 13:42

I don't think I'd call a child Buster any more than I'd call them Snowy, Mittens or Scruffy.

BauerTime · 18/02/2015 13:49

I'm going against the grain and saying that I don't mind it. but I also like Spike which DH informs me is a dogs name.

Thurlow · 18/02/2015 13:55

I think it's a great nickname. Sort of like Spike. If a child's sort of morphed into becoming known as Buster or Spike to the family, that might be quite cool.

As an actual chosen name, no. Definitely, no. Not in the UK at least.

Thurlow · 18/02/2015 13:56

Couldn't resist Grin This, OP, is a Buster.

Though having a 'B' surname I did try and convince DP that we should call any future DSs George Oscar, just so I could have a Gob.

a2011x · 18/02/2015 14:36

Not IMO

itssangriaoclock · 19/02/2015 23:06

Not unless naming a puppy. I'm sorry but no, cute as a nn but not an actual name!

Limer · 19/02/2015 23:10

Buster Gonad and his unfeasibly large testicles.

Blondie87 · 20/02/2015 09:18

No!

wesH · 20/02/2015 10:08

acceptable yes - for a dog

rosepetalsoup · 20/02/2015 10:14

OP - remember Busta Rhymes. Don't do it. Call them Benedict and nickname them Buster.

MaCosta · 20/02/2015 10:17

If you're giving birth to a puppy, yes.
