Effie or Ezra ?

Hi everyone - this is my first ever Mumsnet post , so please go easy Wink . DC 2 is due in a couple of months and we're down to two names for a DD . I realise Ezra is usually a boys name, but we live very rurally and there aren't any boys with this name in the area . We LOVE it for a girl . Have also always loved Effie . Middle name will be Clementine .
Which- if you had to choose- do you prefer ? Thanks Smile

But if you had a son I'm sure it wouldn't be the case that your favourite names for a boy happened to be girls names.

My point was that you never hear of anyone trying to make a girls name fit a boy. Why is it that it's okay for a girl to be given a boys name but not the other way around?

squoosh · 03/02/2015 17:27

It was more a general musing anyway. Some celeb recently named their daughter Wyatt, I just don't get it.

PunkAssMoFo · 03/02/2015 17:43

Esra if you must.

Clementine is lovely.

turdfairynomore · 03/02/2015 18:00

As a pp has mentioned Ezri (Dax) is a star trek character. I know a baby girl named after her.

HoldenCaulfield80 · 04/02/2015 10:56

I'm friend with a Francesca who we call Effie (as in the F). She gets Frankie too so it's pretty versatile!

AShiningTiger · 04/02/2015 11:00

Why not Azra?

EeekNumber4 · 04/02/2015 12:58

I think Esra is lovely. Effie is also pretty. Have you considered Ettie?

ClementineAndCordelia · 05/02/2015 21:41

Thanks to everyone above who has taken the time to comment and give me and DH lots to ponder on ! Particular thanks to those who've said nice things or at least been constructive ! We have moved away from Ezra now , but new Turkish girls name Esra makes the short list . DH has vetoed Effie . We're liking Alba and also Floryn ( nn florrie ) . I also strangely love Mabel . DH is just pulling his hair out already ;)
Anyway this one may also be a boy so will start with new boys name thread ( oddly we don't like Ezra for a boy :-/ yes we are strange !) thanks again !

Ezra is a great name for a guy, weird for a girl but Esra is slightly better. Be prepared for lots of people saying Essra though. Effie is better but like pp's said I'd make it short for something, mainly to give choice.

carbolicsoaprocked · 05/02/2015 22:47

Sorry, x-posted. To me Alba is just like calling your daughter Scotland but I'm Scottish. LOVE Floryn and Mabel, especially with Clementine. Gorgeous.

HolidayHunterTeam · 05/02/2015 22:53

I know a girl called Ezra, I think it's lovely. It's not just a boys name, hate it when people say things like that.

nooka · 06/02/2015 04:20

Of course Ezra is for boys, it's a masculine name! We were going to use it for our second, but she turned out to be a girl so we couldn't use it. Which was sad as I think it is a great name. For a boy!

Boys aren't randomly given girl's names, I think it is a bit weird really.

Is Floryn a name? I have heard of Florent, Florin and Florian (all boys names) but Florrie to me is a nn for Florence or at a push Flora.

I think you should go for Mabel Grin

squoosh · 06/02/2015 10:37

'It's not just a boys name, hate it when people say things like that.'

You hate when people refer to boy's names as boys names? Oh yeah, infuriating!

SunnyBaudelaire · 06/02/2015 10:40

"I know a girl called Ezra, I think it's lovely. It's not just a boys name"
ummm sorry but it is a boy's name, no question. That poor girl.

looki · 06/02/2015 11:30

I like the name Ezra, really like it in fact. For a boy.

If you are going to choose either as a girl's name, I would absolutely go with Effie.

Cor blimey , some people are super serious about names on this site ?! It's as if there was a 'set in stone 'rule book about what you can and absolutely cannot do . Who says ?! The God of names !? It's not a religion ( thankfully ) it's a freedom of choice . I don't think most people set out to do something awful for their child when thinking of a name - it's usually something they find beautiful ( even if the rest of us don't ) . I have a unisex name and love it and I - personally - would have been overjoyed to have been called something like Esra by my parents . So what if it sounds like a known boys name ? So what if that boys name is in the Bible ? So is Elijah and that's used unisexually. So what if some people find it weird ? There are a plethora of conventional names I find deathly boring . But that's what makes us different - and life interesting . There are always middle names and even deed poll if the child really ,really doesn't like it in the future . But usually a child accepts and learns to love what they are called as it makes them 'Them'. How many people on this site don't like their names and how many would have loved to have changed them ?How many actually did because life was unbearable with that name?Very few, i'd imagine .It's mostly judgemental adults who see problems with and hold prejudices against others' tastes . There are wars going on out there and horrific things happening to people . We're just talking about names here ....just throwing some ideas out there . Lighten up people !?

'So is Elijah and that's used unisexually.'

Really?

MishMooshAndMogwai · 06/02/2015 11:57

I love Ezra, Esra and Effie FWIW Wink

Dp vetoed both Ezra for a boy and Effie for a girl but I'll suggest Esra to him and see what he says!

Thinking about it though it might be too much as we already have an Orla.... A bit rhymey maybe...

But if you love it then go for it! Baby naming is hard and if you can find a lovely name that you both agree on then pounce on it! Like you say there's plenty of 'boy names' that are popular for girls now.

squoosh · 06/02/2015 11:58

But still no 'girls names' popular for boys.............

I don't like the idea of using boys' names for girls.

  1. It will be annoying and embarrassing for the girl to have to correct people constantly.

  2. it's very rare for people to do this the other way round.

  3. If the new practice catches on and a traditionally-boys' name turns into a girls' name, it can make things quite awkward for boys who already have this name.

I actually think it's a bit of a rubbish thing to do, to be honest.

anxiousaboutanonymity · 06/02/2015 12:07

squoosh I completely concur. You have quite black-and-white views of baby names ( as do I, admittedly) usually eminently sensible.
I have often wondered what you would make of my choices ( but scared to ask Wink)!
