Wren for a girl?

TheGirlWhoPlayedWithFire · 01/02/2015 14:38

This could be a futile thread as I'm newly pregnant and it could be either sex but I'm mulling over girls names and struggling.

I had this problem with DD1&2 and and DH effectively named them as I was dithering.

However I came across Wren for a girl and I love it. DH thinks I'm mad.

Is it hormones messing with my head? Or is it a perfectly acceptable name?

I'm sure it's painfully hipsterish but I absolutely love the name Wren.

If you don't like the bird association you could call her Renée/Ren instead. Personally I never think of the military link.

seaoflove · 02/02/2015 11:17

I know a Wren and I'm not sure it suits her. It's quite an evocative name - suiting a delicate, willowy kind of girl - and if the girl ends up not fitting that kind of image I feel like the name might jar a little?

squoosh · 02/02/2015 11:22

Wrens are quite small and rotund though. Heron or Flamingo would better suit a willowy girl I think.

OnceUponATimeAgain · 02/02/2015 11:25

"wouldnt cause offense but would look a bit odd"

thats daft - most of the people here (me included) thought the bird

and WHY cant you call a child Senedipity?

I personally like it

isitsnowingyet · 02/02/2015 11:36

Sparrow, Lark, Wren, Heron, Flamingo - no, no and no again. These are names of birds and sound silly+++

However, Linnet

squoosh · 02/02/2015 11:37

I was joking about Heron and Flamingo obviously.

BobbyGentry · 02/02/2015 11:39

Love the name Wren :)

isitsnowingyet · 02/02/2015 11:42

Sorry Squoosh - missed that - Blush

Hakluyt · 02/02/2015 11:52

I just think- imagine being a self conscious, chubby spotty teenager having to introduce yoursek as Lark. I suppose Wren would be all right because people would think it was short for Lauren......

Hakluyt · 02/02/2015 11:54

Do people know what Serendipity means?

GwenStacy · 02/02/2015 11:56

My hypothetical second daughter is called Juniper Wren.

reuset · 02/02/2015 12:11

Would you like to be called Wren? I know I wouldn't. It's pretty weak as far as names go, too.

That's all I have to say...

Cocodale · 02/02/2015 12:17

Love it!

MrsBungle · 02/02/2015 12:20

I know a little Wren, I think its a beautiful name.

OnceUponATimeAgain · 02/02/2015 12:21

Serendipity means a "fortunate happenstance" or "pleasant surprise".

squoosh · 02/02/2015 12:25

GewnStacy I love Juniper too. I'm a fan of slightly pretentious nature names.

Hobbitwife001 · 02/02/2015 12:30

Not too sure about Wren, I like Seren, thats star in Welsh, being Welsh I would though wouldn't I?

reuset · 02/02/2015 12:31

I can see the appeal of Juniper actually. Perhaps it's the lovely sounding Nip or Nipper nick names...

TheGirlWhoPlayedWithFire · 02/02/2015 12:34

Haha *onceupon' serendipity sure fits if it means pleasant surprise. This wasn't a planned pregnancy thats for sure, but were both over the moon about it now.

Like I said its on the short list - it may be a boy .

Plus any child of mine isn't going to be tall. I can guarantee that, given that neither DH or I are tall.

So you want to give your a baby which will make it clear to the world that he/she wasn't planned. Fine. It does seem the sort of decision you shouldn't make without asking the person you're naming. Which obviously you can't do. So...............

MadeInChorley · 02/02/2015 12:41

How do you get from Serendipity to Wren with a W? Wouldn't it be, um, Ren?

Wren makes me think of a tiny Jenny Wren, the Wrens and Ren and Stimpy. Plus, I think the male Kevin Bacon character in Footloose was called Ren. If she's a bruiser of a lass, it's just going to cause hilarity.

TheyLearnedFromBrian · 02/02/2015 12:50

Just call her Fortunate Happenstance (Forty for short).

TheGirlWhoPlayedWithFire · 02/02/2015 13:02

Hak - no I'm not intending to call her serendipity, in RL only DH and I will know that this wasn't planned ANSI don't intend to inform anyone else (except MN, which doesn't count).

I love it - wish I'd thought of it for mine!

OnlyLovers · 02/02/2015 13:07

Don't like Wren, sorry. I think it's twee.

Along similar lines, I think Larkin is nice.
