What do you think? I think I love it, but am fully aware it won't be everybody's cup of tea :o/

We have a very common surname, which it does nicely with.

I like Dusty for a teenager/ young woman though! Maybe your middle name idea would work then she could choose to use it if she likes it when older.

Blahia · 01/02/2015 09:29

Yes, I'm thinking middle name is the way to go... ;)

Haha ridiculous name. Please don't OP.

Jesus Christ, there's some small minded wankishness on this thread. Why does calling your DD Dusty suggest either small ambitions? MotherofDragons, if it helps, my Dusty has an older sibling who got accepted into an Ivy League for this September. We have just as big dreams for D as we do for the rest of the family. And, there is nothing stopping her be a High Court Judge if that's what she wants to be, least of all her name!

2 of the biggest porn stars currently are called Ava and Avery. Both pretty common, normal names.

Arsenic · 02/02/2015 02:20

We have a very common surname, which it does nicely with.

Miller? (AuntStella is spot on about that)

I don't mind people saying 'no' of that they dislike it -that's completely fine with me, but some replies were a bit rude, that's all.

You do know you've just asked about an eccentric silly name choice on baby names? That's what happens Grin

JapaneseMargaret · 02/02/2015 06:55

It would never make my own short list, but, I actually quite like it!

I am of the school of thought re middle names, that they're either for honoring special people, or as an outlet for whacky creativity. So I would go with the middle name option, and then use it on a daily basis, so that she does have options later in life.

I can easily imagine a lawyer, endocrinologist, academic, policy analyst, for example, called a Dusty.

JapaneseMargaret · 02/02/2015 06:56
  • called Dusty. :)
Brightideas · 02/02/2015 06:57

Please don't tell me she will be Dusty Brown.

SquirmOfEels · 02/02/2015 06:59

On MN, people will tell you as they see it.

And yes, a proportion of people really do think it's That Bad.

Would they say it in RL? No. Would they say it on other sites? Possibly not, because other sites have other norms.

Do they say it here? Yes, because this is MN, and this is what we do.

(Personally, I think you've had quite a temperate set of responses),

mathanxiety · 02/02/2015 07:03

Dusty Springfield's real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien.

Anything there that strikes you?

PrimalLass · 02/02/2015 07:34

No

hrpufnstuf · 02/02/2015 09:39

Augusta nn Dusty?

KatherinaMinola · 02/02/2015 09:51

Now that I do like, hrpfunstuf!

Blahia · 02/02/2015 11:15

Uhh! Augusta nn Dusty is a pretty good suggestion ! :)

And yes, so many small minded people on here. But I won't stoop to their level -don't do online cat fights, sorry! ;)

OP posts:
magpieginglebells · 02/02/2015 11:40

Who has been small minded? Cat fights? You asked opinions and people have you an honest answer. What's wrong with that?

If I met a baby Dusty I would assume the parent was trying to be different and quirky, and trying too hard.

SaBearOz · 02/02/2015 11:53

I know someone who wanted to name their DD Dusty but it turned out to be a DS so his name is Dustin with Dusty as a NN.

reuset · 02/02/2015 12:24

What do I think of the 'name' Dusty?

Don't be silly, is what I think. And those telling you to go for it are pulling your leg.

hrpufnstuf · 02/02/2015 13:53

Glad you like it Blahia, we've got at least one "X but known as Y by the family" option on our shortlist; I can see a teenager/young woman loving having a cool name like Dusty, and then if at any time she wants/feels she needs something less quirky then Augusta is very grown up and sophisticated.

I also love that Dusty Springfield got her nickname from getting grubby playing football Grin - from scruffy tomboy to one of the world's most respected female vocalists; it doesn't seem to have limited her life choices!

mathanxiety · 02/02/2015 18:43

Actually, iirc her life was pretty miserable.

Winona1 · 01/01/2019 17:44

@Blahia I love this name , did you end up calling your daughter this x

daisypond · 01/01/2019 19:21

I don't like it. The dirtiness, the smallness, the something-to-be-got-rid-of of dust, etc. None of its connotations are good.

MumUnderTheMoon · 01/01/2019 20:19

I love it but it is unusual and could raise a few eyebrows it wouldn't bother me but if it will bother you Destry sounds similar.

Coldtoes28 · 02/01/2019 00:19

I actually really like it!

Astronica · 02/01/2019 09:36

I don't mind it. I think it could work. Australian designer Leona Edmiston has a little daughter called Dusty - just Dusty I think not a nickname for something else.

MikeUniformMike · 02/01/2019 16:12

You'd need a surname like Hall or House to go with it.
How about Stormy instead?
