Evelyn?

Just curious as I would pronounce it
Eve - Lynn but when I was chatting to DM about girls names she said she would pronounce it Ev - Lynn.

So wise mumsnetters, who is correct??Smile

I know an Evelyn.
She answers to Ev-Lin not Eve-Lin, she'll correct you if you call her Eve-Lin.
But I'd automatically say Eve-Lin and I think I prefer the way it sounds.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 31/01/2015 22:12

I have one. We say ev lyn. She does get called eve Lynn by people sometimes.. Not too much of an issue.
It's a beautiful name, we get lots of compliments about it!

squoosh · 31/01/2015 22:12

Evelyn has two pronunciations but I don't think there's a male pronunciation and a female one.

KatherinaMinola · 31/01/2015 22:12

Ever-lin, unless told otherwise.

KatherinaMinola · 31/01/2015 22:13

I've heard three pronunciations - Ever-lin, Eve-lin and Eva-lin (and now Ev-lin!) but I don't think there's a 'correct' one as such.

abigboydidit · 31/01/2015 22:19

Very common name where I am in Scotland for women aged 50ish. I work with 3 - all say Evva-lyn/Evvu-lyn.

BouleSheet · 31/01/2015 22:25

Ev-Lynn. I'm in Ireland so know quite a few (who pronounce it like this but Eve-Lynn is lovely too)

mathanxiety · 01/02/2015 03:34

Evv-elyn for a girl (with Evie, pronounced Evvie as a NN), Ee-velyn for a boy, as in Ee-velyn Waugh.

NadiaWadia · 01/02/2015 03:58

You can pronounce it either way. Eev-lyn is certainly not just for boys. (My grandma was one). It makes sense really, as I suppose it can be thought of as an extension of Eve. I find it prettier, myself.

I don't think many people nowadays would actually name a boy Evelyn anyway, (maybe many many years ago they would) as it seems very girly. Although I have heard of Evelyn Waugh, obviously.

CheerfulYank · 01/02/2015 04:03

EV-uh-linn (Am American)

squoosh · 01/02/2015 04:10

There aren't male and female pronunciations of this name. Honestly.

mathanxiety · 01/02/2015 06:05

Evelyn Waugh used the EE-vlin pronunciation. I don't think there are too many males with this name, but this is how it is usually pronounced if the bearer is a man. The same pronunciation can be used for women, but EVV-elyn is never used for men.

Pandora37 · 01/02/2015 07:07

ev-lyn

stripedtortoise · 01/02/2015 07:24

Neither...

Ev-a-lyn.

MythicalKings · 01/02/2015 07:32

Female Ev-lin
Male Eve-lin (Waugh)

Only 2 syllables for both.

RowRowRowCrocodileScream · 01/02/2015 08:01

Eve-lynn or at least, that's how my great aunt's name was pronounced

MythicalKings · 01/02/2015 08:20

Just done some googling three syllable Ev er Lin seems to be and American thing.

SoupDragon · 01/02/2015 08:39

Just done some googling three syllable Ev er Lin seems to be and American thing.

I've always pronounced it Ever Lin from well before the influx of American TV and I'm not American.

MythicalKings · 01/02/2015 08:47

I've always used 2 syllables for both. Never heard 3 syllables used in the UK. But the ones I've known would be in the 90s now.

Maybe it's a regional thing in the UK as well but 3 syllables seems to be the norm in the US. Not so in the UK.

honeysucklejasmine · 01/02/2015 08:51
