Possible problem with DD's chosen name

Hello, we love the name Molly for our impending DD but are slightly worried it doesn't sound right with our surname which is the same as the famous actress called Joan and begins with Coll. The problem is the repetition of the 'oll' sound in Molly and Coll*.

Do you think it sounds ok or should we forget about the name Molly altogether? It is my absolute favourite and could really do with your help!

Sorry I do think it sounds wrong. It's just too similar.

OhBuggeringBollocks · 29/12/2014 22:52

No it is too matchy I think.

How about Milly? Although for me the double "L" might still be a bit much.

Gabriola · 29/12/2014 22:54

Sorry, but It sounds like a cocktail.

queenbrunhilda · 29/12/2014 22:55

How would you feel about her being known informally as Molly Colly as that might be quite a natural/tempting abbreviation?

InanimateCarbonRod · 29/12/2014 22:55

If you say it quickly it sounds like mollycoddling.

cookietrue22 · 29/12/2014 22:55

There are much worse names out there OP.
If you live the name you should use it. I think it sounds fine with your surname.

Hassled · 29/12/2014 22:56

It's too much - sorry, because I love the name Molly. But it just doesn't work.

catsofa · 29/12/2014 23:13

Yeah, I don't think it works, sorry.

Deerhound · 29/12/2014 23:18

Ach, I think it's OK. If it's an issue for you would you consider calling her Margaret or Matilda nn Molly?

cosmicglittergirl · 29/12/2014 23:19

I think if you love the name do it. It sounds ok, she ll be known as Molly mainly anyway. My DH's name is a bit like this with only one vowel difference but the same first and third letter, I suppose it does sound a bit matchy but it never occurred to me before.

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 29/12/2014 23:22

My SIL has a name similar to this but with alliterative initials and actually it's fine.
So I think yours would be fine too.

I think it sounds fine.

Sophronia · 30/12/2014 10:43

How about Mary nn Molly?

sooperdooper · 30/12/2014 10:48

I think it sounds too sing-song and I wouldnt use it, I think kids would quickly pick up on making it into silly rhymes and such at school too

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 30/12/2014 11:13

My D.D is Molly. I don't like the name now though but it really suits her.
Molly Collins is a lovely combination IMO.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 30/12/2014 11:15

I don't think it works with your surname unfortunately. It's not dreadful though.

TaytoCrisp · 30/12/2014 11:18

I also think molly Collins is lovely!
Biased here as I have a gorgeous molly Smile.

How often do people use the full name anyway?

Speaking as someone who grew up with a daft name combination I can tell you that the answer is many, many times.

divingoffthebalcony · 30/12/2014 12:08

You can get away with a little bit of rhyming, but that is too much I think.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 30/12/2014 12:11

I like the name. But not with your surname, it's too much of a 'run on'.

Unexpected · 30/12/2014 12:14

To the person who asked how often a person's full name is used, the answer, if you have another child with the same first name in your class in school, is all day every day! DS1, for instance, had three Katies in his primary school class whose full names were used to distinguish them. It just sounds a bit twee and rhyme-y to me and she will be called something like Mollycolly by her friends.

AmysTiara · 30/12/2014 12:23

No sorry it doesn't go.

RaisingMen · 30/12/2014 15:57

No sorry, it doesn't go. It sounds like mollycoddle.
