Possible problem with DD's chosen name

Hello, we love the name Molly for our impending DD but are slightly worried it doesn't sound right with our surname which is the same as the famous actress called Joan and begins with Coll. The problem is the repetition of the 'oll' sound in Molly and Coll*.

Do you think it sounds ok or should we forget about the name Molly altogether? It is my absolute favourite and could really do with your help!

It sounds a bit like a cocktail. But I think the 2 olls are fine. It does go.

Mehitabel6 · 30/12/2014 16:04

The fact that you are having to ask shows it should be avoided.

ClashCityRocker · 30/12/2014 16:05

Tilly?

youarekiddingme · 30/12/2014 16:06

It's fine IMO. I like the ring to it.
However I'm also a big fan of the name Matilda nn Tilly or Matty.
I wouldn't use a name with nn Molly as she'll still get called Molly Collins iyswim? So if you really don't like it it won't solve the problem!

TheReluctantCountess · 30/12/2014 16:07

Molly is a nice name, but with the surname it sounds like mollycoddling.

Coyoacan · 30/12/2014 16:11

I love the name Molly and your surname as well, but I'm afraid I think they don't go together.

Jux · 30/12/2014 16:12

Whatever name you choose will be used in some way by the other children she knows. Some will be her friends and the nicknames they use will be affectionate, some children will like her less (or worse) and will use names to try to hurt her. Whatever you call her.

Call her what you want to call her.

RaisingMen · 30/12/2014 20:22

Could you have a middle name to break it up?

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 30/12/2014 20:32

I don't think it goes at all, sorry.
I think you need a name like Melissa, which as a family you could shorten to Milly if you wanted to.

Or, as Molly's a diminutive of Mary and Margaret how about choosing one of those names in another language such as the Finnish 'Marita' or Maggie or Margot?

flowerygirl · 30/12/2014 20:54

I really like it! Sounds like a really friendly person's name

VioletVelvet · 30/12/2014 21:45

I think it sounds fine. I quite like it actually!

CornChips · 30/12/2014 21:50

Could you also hyphen your surname so it 'goes' So, Molly Smith-Collins or Molly Davidson-Collins or whatever?

Molly is such a pretty name it seems a shame not to use it!

BigfootFilesHisToesInYourTea · 30/12/2014 21:51

If you Google it, there's lots of Molly Collins already out there. Doctors, lecturers, handknitters... doesn't seem to have held them back.

RiverTam · 30/12/2014 21:51

I quite like it, but I did automatically think 'is it a cocktail' - think I'm thinking of a Tom Collins.

Collins always makes me think of Mrs Bennett squawking in Pride and Prejudice - 'oh, Mr Collins!!!!'

HolyTerror · 31/12/2014 00:29

It wouldn't bother me in the least.

SurfsUp1 · 31/12/2014 04:40

Makes me think mollycoddle straight away. Sorry.

SurfsUp1 · 31/12/2014 04:44

Makes me think mollycoddle straight away. Sorry.

Mammanat222 · 31/12/2014 11:31

We have a similar issue - surname means we had to discount a lot of names

Holly, Ellie etc.. Basically anything with a double LL ending in Y or IE.

Surname is not the same as OP's but the issue was the same. There was just too much repetition for our liking.

BikeRunSki · 31/12/2014 11:33

I think it's fine.

Reindeerballs · 31/12/2014 11:47

It sounds fine to me - she will get called 'Molly-Colly' but nothing wrong with that particularly - I think that's rather nice. I think calling her something else, then Molly as a nickname will cause no end of hassle.

I don't get the name matching thing. My own names don't match at all well but I kept my own name even on marriage. There are loads of kids with hyphenated or unusual names nowadays - at least she will be straightforward and memorable.

nataliejayne1 · 31/12/2014 11:49

I like it but I may be slightly biased as i have a gorgeous DD called Mollie

I know of a Robyn Robinson and also a Fynn Findley! I've never heard any problems with them, but I do understand what you mean. Could you double barrel the first name instead? Like Molly-May? (Just as an example, first one that came to my head!) x

professornangnang · 31/12/2014 20:09

One syllable name with 2 syllable surname or vice versa. Never have 2 syllable name with 2 syllable surname.

Frikadellen · 01/01/2015 16:14

I don't mind it. Would be worse if your surname was Olly ending too.
