Just that really. This is dd3 and we are struggling to find a name, but do like this. Would you say Rom-illy or Ro-milly? What do you think of it?

Other vague considerations are India & Grace. Any help appreciated!

I'd pronounce it Ro-milly but I think I'd prefer it like Rom-illee.

Littlefish · 17/12/2014 18:48

Rom-i-lee

I really like it.

SpottyTeacakes · 17/12/2014 18:48

Rom-illy. There used to be a news corresponder on the bbc called romilly. I like it Smile

Etihad · 17/12/2014 18:48

There's a news reporter called Romilly Weeks, she pronounces it Rom-illy. I like it, but there is a place near us called Romiley (pronounced the same) so not one we could use!

Bowlersarm · 17/12/2014 18:49

Rom-illy

I really like it.

OhMyActualDays · 17/12/2014 18:50

I know someone who has a Romilly (Rom-i-lee) who has a sister called Etoile (they pronounce it Ett-o-lee, I don't know if that's standard, I don't know any others!) Just thought you might like that too

BreeVDKamp · 17/12/2014 18:50

I say ROM-illy. Love it!

Littlefish · 17/12/2014 18:57

Etoile is the French word for star and should be pronounced more like "et-wahl". It's really hard for me to write the pronunciation, but it certainly isn't Ett-o-lee.

pookamoo · 17/12/2014 18:58

ohmy are you sure it's not "Ottilie" ?

18yearstooold · 17/12/2014 19:01

Rom-i-lee

Lovely name

Sarsparilla · 17/12/2014 19:12

I pronounce it like Emily, but with "Rom" at the beginning instead of "Em."

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 17/12/2014 19:14

I was going to say exactly the same as Sarsparilla.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 17/12/2014 19:15

Yes rom as in romcom
Rom-I-Lee but smoothly like emily

acharmofgoldfinches · 17/12/2014 19:15

Love Romilly, we also have Romola (as in the lovely Ms Garai) on our list in case that appeals?

makesomenoise · 17/12/2014 19:40

Ooo, thanks, lovely to see positive responses. It's not common is it but it is lovely...hmmm.. think we may have a contender!

Prefer Romola. It's a proper name. Goes back to ancient times and has wonderful George Eliot connections. Romilly is a place name: surnames.behindthename.com/name/romilly

As Littlefiesh says, Etoile (French for Star) = Eh-twahl, approx.

Simiarly, Ottilie should properly be Ott-eel-yuh.

MaraThonbar · 17/12/2014 22:20

Is the second 'o' in Romola long or short?

OhMyActualDays · 17/12/2014 22:37

They definitely spell it Etoile and say Et-o-lee as I have seen both. Clearly not correct however!

OhMyActualDays · 17/12/2014 22:38

Or seen and heard I mean!

furcoatbigknickers · 17/12/2014 22:40

Love it. Rom-i-lee.

TongueBiter · 17/12/2014 22:43

Re mispronounciations - I used to know a Chlöe who insisted the umlaut meant it was pronounced "Cho-lee". She was absolutely convinced of that fact and got very upset if you called her Chlöe.

manicinsomniac · 17/12/2014 23:02

Yes, Rom-i-lee, like Emily.

I like it. Also like India and Grace. Lovely choices.

re Etoile, there seem to be quite a few French names that get mispronounced over here. I've met an Elise pronounced El-iss-a and a Louis pronounce Loo-iss. Both times surprised me as I they were parents that I would expect to know how to say French word endings.

squoosh · 17/12/2014 23:12

ROM-i-lee as Romilly Weeks pronounces it.

I don't really like it though, it reminds me of Rommel the Desert Fox.

Though I quite like Romola (Romy) as suggested by flora above.

TheNewStatesman · 18/12/2014 00:28

Don't get the current love for this name. Sounds like rumbly to me.

AskMeAnother · 18/12/2014 00:31

Rommy li'. Knew a Roma, once. She was named after her grandma, who was Aroma.
