Love Agatha I think it's gorgeous especially with nn Aggie!
Ursula will always be the sea witch to me, sorry.

scarletforya · 15/12/2014 23:31

Both very ugly names. Sorry!

squoosh · 15/12/2014 23:37

I once saw a little girl lying on the floor in Waitrose having a full on shrieky tantrum. Her mother was coaxing her 'come on Agatha, let's go buy some hummous'

I thought, if I was called Agatha I'd be freaking out too.

Poor little Agatha.

Roomba · 15/12/2014 23:42

One of the most awesome women I know is an Ursula, so it automatically makes me think of her and smile. Oh and Ursula le Guin (wonderful author).

Other than that, I still really like the name. I agree it is due a revival! And I never twigged what its meaning was until now - little bear, I love that.

Agatha/Aggie is lovely too. I know an Agatha (known always as Aggie) who is six I think - it suits her perfectly as she's sparky and inquisitive.

ladybird69 · 15/12/2014 23:43

Don't really like ursula, blame disney not too keen on Agatha, I prefer agnetha (big abba fan)

WhiteHairReally · 16/12/2014 00:00

I too knew an inspirational woman called Ursula so it was on the shortlist for DD1 way back last century. The Disney link passed me by completely. We didn't choose it in the end and DD1 has said more than once that she would have preferred to be called Ursula than her own name that went Top Five ten years later. There was a baby Ursula on the NCT circuit when DD1 was about 3. Agathas are more common.

I'd add Frances and Eunice to an alternatives list.

squoosh · 16/12/2014 00:03

Frances is lovely.

Eunice is a nun's name. And not a nice nun. One of the ferocious ones.

Mutteroo · 16/12/2014 00:11

My great aunt was an Ursula. She was known by her nickname of Ula (pronounced OOla). Don't like the name but my great aunt had an amazing personality and if all Ursulas are like her, they would be truly wonderful characters.

Do not like Agatha at all. It's one of those old lady names I can't get my head around.

redredholly · 16/12/2014 07:14

Frances is very nice!

I love Ursula...I had a little girl at school called that and she was a sweetheart.
Celia and Cecily are good too.
My granny was a Gertrude , ugly name .

vitaminC · 16/12/2014 07:27

The only Ursula I've known was German and used the nickname Ulla. To me it's a stripper name - lots of prostitutes leave stickers with their phone number on lamp posts, traffic lights etc and this is one of the names you often see here. I really can'tget past that I'm afraid.
Agatha is not quite as horrid but I prefer the French Agathe (or even the spelling Agate).
Matilda/Mathilde also has a similar feel.
And I met a young girl called Gladys not too long ago! Definitely the same generation.

shakemysilliesout · 16/12/2014 09:27

Eunice isn't a nun name for me (nun name is bernadette). To 90s gladiators fans eunice will always be the greatest winner.

Ursula is a prostitute name? that's worse than sea witch.

Gladys is very Enid blyton, and I believe Enid blyton names are on their way back.

redredholly · 16/12/2014 09:29

Hm.... I quite like Cecily too. What do others think. This thread is certainly working for me getting ideas, so carry on doing what you're doing ladies!! (even if it is stating your worst names!!)

redredholly · 16/12/2014 09:29

P.s. Gladys is a step too far even for me. It sounds like glans.

I was also going to suggest Celia, for its 'pared back quality' like Frances. Another 'U' name I've noted in the past is Undine ('Undeen') it's one of those family names given to girls associated with a National Trust style property in the past. My grandmother was Frances Alkelda (After St Alkelda's, parish church in Giggleswick, Yorkshire, where she was christened) but she was a bossy little girl with airs so got called Queenie, which became 'Q' which. as I've muttered about on here before is just so cool, but I digress.

Judith (but don't like Judy)

CrispyFern · 16/12/2014 20:11

I like Ursula, it was my second choice name for DD! The meaning is adorable.
I like Ushi and Oola.

shakemysilliesout · 16/12/2014 20:16

I like judy but not Judith

PinkiePromise · 16/12/2014 20:21

My DH who so wanted Ursula also put forward the names Oona and Orla as his choices for DD2. I know they don't quite have the same vibe as Ursula but something similar in the sounds.

I had a friend at school called Cecilia, we always called her Cecil which I thought was cool.

itsnothingoriginal · 16/12/2014 20:23

Can't quite get past the Urgh sound in Ursula but Agatha I like! A good strong name Smile

Homebird8 · 16/12/2014 20:26

I like Ursula. In the same vain, what about Maud?

CruCru · 16/12/2014 20:39

I love Agatha. Not so keen on Ursula.

Homebird8 · 16/12/2014 20:41

Vein - urgh!

WhiteHairReally · 17/12/2014 00:31

I second Homebird8, love Maud. It's the name of my non-existent DD2.

ppeatfruit · 17/12/2014 17:04

How about Clementine (Clemmie for short?) Or Marianne, I love that name it's DD1's!!.

Or Marie Elise, Maria, Marie Elena,

Cara or Caro short for Carolyn, Caroline, Zara, Elizabeth etc etc.

Homebird8 · 17/12/2014 19:02

Another thought... Marguerite?
