I read Women in Love when I was in my late teens and remember thinking at the time that Ursula And Gudrun were the ugliest names I'd ever heard. I still do Xmas Blush

Butterpuff · 15/12/2014 14:31

I used to think of Ursula as the sea witch, then met an Ursula who is one of the nicest people you could hope to meet. So now I think the name is lovely.

Agatha is quite a strong name, traditional and due a revival.

burgatroyd · 15/12/2014 15:47

They sound unpleasant. If I was naming a sea witch I'd call her Ursula too.

manicinsomniac · 15/12/2014 15:53

Sorry to sound harsh but they are two of only three names that I think sound genuinely ugly and really strongly dislike.

redredholly · 15/12/2014 16:00

What is the third - perhaps it's my ideal baby name!!

I think it's hard to find a nice, unique name that's both rare and not made up, but it's so easy to get it wrong! When I was pregnant with my 2nd, the girls name I had picked was Enid. I thank god he was a boy!

That said, my daughters name was quite rare in 2003, now it's consistently in the top 5!

ppeatfruit · 15/12/2014 16:19

It'll be abbreviated to 'erse' or 'shula', sorry but I wouldn't do that to a child of mine.

I HATE the name Enid, Clueing there was an awful woman at college called Enid and I didn't like the name before I knew her!

ppeatfruit · 15/12/2014 16:22

it's hard to find a unique name Well if you think about the child, I remember wanting to be part of the crowd not 'unique.' I suppose you can always change yr name if you really hate it.

loislines · 15/12/2014 16:24

Love Enid! Was on the list for Dc2 (who was a boy).

FunkyPeacock · 15/12/2014 16:29

I like Ursula and Agatha

I certainly wouldn't let Disney thing put you off, doubt the majority of people would associate with it

ppeatfruit · 15/12/2014 16:30

I prefer Lois Xmas Grin It's softer, Enid is harsh. Nid means nest in french!

TaurielTest · 15/12/2014 16:37

I'm wary of names with ..su... in them because of how variable people's pronunciation might be - that middle syllable could be "syuh", "shuh" or "suh" - no problem if you like the sound of all those though.

Personally I prefer Agatha, and if only it didn't have Thatcherite connections, Hilda/Hilde is nice in the same sort of vein. Lots of nice Germanic girl names out there

YvesJutteau · 15/12/2014 16:37

I really like Ursula, but I did let Disney put me off. I like Agnes as well (DH vetoed that) so that might be to your taste?

SparkleZilla · 15/12/2014 16:39

ewwww..... Ursula and Agatha and Enid really dont like them at all, they are harsh

(i like (boring) names like Rebecca, Isabel, Amy, Jessica so gives you some idea of names i do like)

Bearlet · 15/12/2014 16:45

I like Ursula (especially the meaning Grin), but I did watch The Little Mermaid at an impressionable age, so the Disney association is pretty strong for me. A somewhat similar one is the Nordic name Cordula, which is related to (but possibly less romance-novel-y than) Cordelia.

noitsachicken · 15/12/2014 16:50

canyouforgiveher I knew a German Ursula called Ushi! I wonder if it's a common nickname in Germany, or the same person?!

Not keen on the name though, sounds very harsh.

Hoppinggreen · 15/12/2014 16:55

Mil is Austrian and it's her name - she hated it and always has. She actually uses her middle name and I didn't even know her real name for several years after I met her.
Maybe it's for that reason but I don't like it ( love my mil though).
Agnes is nice though

Sophronia · 15/12/2014 17:50

I really like Ursula.

ursulaisawonderfulname · 15/12/2014 18:13

Ok have namechanged here! I am an Ursula and no one has EVER referred to the sea witch, even children. I think some people over think names. If you like it, use it! There will always be people who like/dislike your choice so choose what you like.

(My parents were quite adventurous/sophisticated/eccentric types which may have influenced their name choices!)

It's a marmite name and as an Ursula, I can only recommend it!

Lunastarfish · 15/12/2014 18:17

I love Ursula, it's on my girls list. I couldn't give a toss about the Little Mermaid & a pretend villain. it's not like you're naming her Myra (Hindley)

SageSeymour · 15/12/2014 18:24

Both horrible, unattractive subduing names

SageSeymour · 15/12/2014 18:25

Sounding !!

manicinsomniac · 15/12/2014 21:57

redredholly - haha, maybe it is! The third is Gertrude.

AnythingNotEverything · 15/12/2014 22:02

I think I love Ursula but I can't decide how to pronounce it. I need to know how I would pronounce it before I propose it to DH for our current growing bump.

DramaAlpaca · 15/12/2014 22:39

I really dislike both of them, sorry.
