Esme, Esmé or Esmée

We have decided to call our little girl Rosie Esme. There seems to be confusion on the pronunciation of Esme, the name is after a family member who pronounced it Ez-mee. We would like it pronounced Ez-may to go with Rosie. Any ideas?

My niece is Esme, ez-may. To be honest have never heard it any other way except on here.

Esme.

EskSmith · 15/12/2014 07:59

I'd pronounce Esme-Ezmee, Esmé-Esmay and Esmée -Esmay.

Esmée is the correct spelling for a female Esmé in french. Having said all that I have an Esmé ;)

That's what I found from the internet I think Esmé looks nicer than Esmée x

Stick to Esme. I've only ever heard the name pronounced Ez-mee, but given that it's a middle name and won't be used that much I'd just spell and pronounce it how you like.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/12/2014 08:24

I've only known Esme pronounced as Ez-may.

Pico2 · 15/12/2014 08:32

I'd go for Esme as it is a middle name, so few people are going to try to pronounce it. Finding accents when typing can be difficult for some people, so you are likely to get it written incorrectly in the uk.

Bobby1234 · 15/12/2014 08:32

I want to spell it correctly for the pronunciation otherwise she will be rosie Ez- Mie x

I've known a few Esme's pronounced both Ez-mee and Ez-may. I'm not sure there is a way of spelling it 'correctly for the pronunciation' in this case, I think people will say it differently whichever you go for

Sophronia · 15/12/2014 10:18

I'd go with Esmée as this makes the pronunciation clearer.

florascotia · 15/12/2014 18:33

It's an adjective, French, which means 'esteemed' or 'beloved'.

If following French language rules, then 'e with accent' for a boy and 'ee with accent on the first e' for a girl.

If following French (and Scottish) pronounciation then approx Esz-maigh for both. Not Ezz-mee. The name was first recorded in the British Isles for a Scottish man wh had spent years in France: http: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esm%C3%A9_Stewart,_1st_Duke_of_Lennox

Bobby1234 · 15/12/2014 18:55

I want to get it right so Esmée it may have to be. I would feel bad if I gave her the wrong name x

é

The é sound is like the e in cafe. It makes an 'ay' sound. So esmé and esmée should be pronounced es-may

Esme would be Esmie

Legodino · 15/12/2014 19:05

Alternatively you could just called her esmee with no ancient above the e so that the ee makes an ee sound rather then an ay sound

Legodino · 15/12/2014 19:06

The E in Amélie should be pronounced like the E in cafe

Legodino · 15/12/2014 19:07

Amelie without an ancient would have a different pronunciation

poocatcherchampion · 16/12/2014 07:49

I can't make it go with Rosie with either pronunciation tbh. if I could do phonetics I'd spell it out but I'm getting different sounds.

sorry!

Hedgehogsbuzz1 · 16/12/2014 11:50

Esme rose

Bobby1234 · 16/12/2014 13:53

I'm happy with the name choice just want to be sure of the spelling of Esmée as they are different names x

OP posts:
Hedgehogsbuzz1 · 16/12/2014 15:50

How are you pronouncing that?

Hedgehogsbuzz1 · 16/12/2014 15:51

Esmée would be es-may because of the French accent on top of the E

Bobby1234 · 16/12/2014 16:36

Ez- May it's the female equivalent to the unisex name. X
