Today at work I came across a 30 something guy called Dickon. Who would do that to their child??!!

Hid surname didn't exactly help either, though not sure any would?

(Having looked it up, apparently Dickon is Old English for Richard.)

I know an 8 year old Dickon.

Northumberlandlass · 09/12/2014 08:40

I know a Diccon - shortened from Richard. Mid 40's - it's not pronounced dickON though Smile

I loved Dickon from The Secret Garden, he was so kind and wise. I still wish someone had put a pillow over Colin's face.

But no, I definitely wouldn't call a child Dickon.

Linguaphile · 09/12/2014 13:54

Oh my, I love the name Dickon, but that's because of the Secret Garden. Wish I had the cajones to use it!!

5446 · 09/12/2014 14:06

Ooh Dickon was the name of my old physio.

Could never laugh at him when he was fixing me up.

apotatoprintinapeartree · 09/12/2014 14:10

I think its a nice name, have only ever heard of it through the secret garden.
I agree there are many other names that cause some folk to attach genital connotations

squoosh · 09/12/2014 14:14

I think the genital connections are just a bit too strong with this name.

'Dickon's got a hard-on'

'Dickon put his dick on me'

squoosh · 09/12/2014 14:15

And I'm sure there are an array of other 'hilarious' phrases that 13 year old schoolmates could come up with.

Whatisaweekend · 09/12/2014 19:29

I know one! Dickon, early 40's. Lovely name, I think!

BikeRunSki · 09/12/2014 19:40

Oooh I wonder if it's the Dickon I went to school with Whatisaweekend? Surname began with E and went to school in London! At least 2 sisters.

livvagterne · 09/12/2014 19:53

terrible!

avocadoadvantage · 09/12/2014 19:58

I know a 20 something with Diccon as a middle name. I was told it was old English for Richard.

SilverShins · 09/12/2014 20:07

Yep, I also know a Dickon. He's in his 30s. There we are, there's loads out there.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 09/12/2014 20:57

Or you all know the same three Grin

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 09/12/2014 22:22

Love it, I've loved it since I was a teenager.

The connotations do worry me though, so never really had it on my lists when I was pg. I'm pretty sure DH would have vetoed it too. Bah.

BikeRunSki · 09/12/2014 23:07

TBH, I don't remember the Dickon at school being teased about his name. We were too busy laughing at our teachers Mr Gay, Miss Venus and Mr Fallas (whose name was Richard William). ShockHmmBlushSmile

TheNewStatesman · 09/12/2014 23:16

Unless you want him to be teased, NO!!!

Beangarda · 09/12/2014 23:28

I knew one at university, too. He was a brilliantly clever scientist who was a bit of a mad lad outside the lab. It's not that controversial a name, surely? For hundreds of years it was the ordinary nickname for Richard, before that contracted further to Dick. Still plenty of older men around with that name. Are people really as juvenile as they seem on here? Because I'm fairly certain that the predictors of playground hell are saying more about themselves than the presumed opinions of children...

RonaldMcDonald · 09/12/2014 23:39

I know an adorable Dickon
Fab

inconceivableme · 10/12/2014 08:49

Poor Mr Fallas!!!

I'd love to know where all you Dickon knowers are from, roughly speaking.

Yorkshire. Grin No one is surprised.

Beangarda · 11/12/2014 23:48

The Dickon I knew was studying in Oxford, but was from Somerset, Alis.

AmITwirly · 12/12/2014 13:29

I've come across a Dickon before. I also used to know a Panton, which is equally as bad.

I think if you are very posh (as they both were) you can probably just about get away with it.
