I have fallen in love with this name. What do others think? Seems to be both feminine and boyish and elegant but simple.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
burgatroyd · 30/11/2014 18:28

Love it! One of my fave names!

northernlurker · 30/11/2014 18:29

I don't like it at all. Sorry.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 30/11/2014 18:29

I've never heard it, how is it pronounced? I keep saying it to myself but can't quite make my mind up yet!

northernlurker · 30/11/2014 18:29

And it's anything but simple!

pinkyredrose · 30/11/2014 18:30

It's fucking revolting.

MothershipG · 30/11/2014 18:30

How do you pronounce it? Sidney or Sid-o-ney? Are you ok with Sid? Because that's what it will be shortened to.

Bowlersarm · 30/11/2014 18:31

Horrible. Sorry OP.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 30/11/2014 18:32

I like it.

toomuchcoffeetoomuchwine · 30/11/2014 18:32

I was at school with a Sidonie. Naturally she was known 100% of the time as Sid.

SwedishEdith · 30/11/2014 18:34

Well, it's lovely if you say it with a French accent. If you're not in a French speaking country I'd just assume it'd be mispronounced all the time.

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 30/11/2014 18:40

Not for me. Many more nice French names

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 30/11/2014 19:23

I second mothership's question.
Is it Sydney but a fancy spelling or will it be pronounced Sid-O-nie.

florascotia · 30/11/2014 19:49

Sidonie is the French female version of a Roman name - Sidonius - which meant 'from the town of Sidon' (now in Lebanon).

PrincessOfChina · 30/11/2014 19:50

It was my Great Grandmothers name. I also know a two year old.

I like it.

florascotia · 30/11/2014 19:53

In French, prn is approx Seed-oh-nee.

This site has American and French pronounciations: www.forvo.com/word/sidonie/#en

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 30/11/2014 20:00

I love it, it was on my list for both dc along with Salome and Amandine. Dh was not convinced.

Sophronia · 30/11/2014 20:15

I prefer Sidonia.

Emstheword · 30/11/2014 20:30

Unless you have a beautiful French accent....just no! (Sorry)

SoMuchForSubtlety · 30/11/2014 20:33

All it makes me think of is Juan Antonio Samaranch announcing that Sydney had won the 2000 Olympics.

Andcake · 30/11/2014 20:38

Hmmm never heard it before but as I saw it it just made me struggle to pronounce and end up with a word like sodomy!

cherubimandseraphim · 30/11/2014 20:45

I like it. Could be shortened to Siri.

NigellasGuest · 30/11/2014 20:47

I like it! ages ago I bought some shoes by a designer called Sidonie Larizzi or Laritzi and have always liked Sidonie since then.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/11/2014 21:32

I don't think this one works well outside of France/French speaking countries.

MothershipG · 30/11/2014 21:54

cherub How? Grin As someone said unthread, it will be Sid.

I used to watch old films with Cyd Cherrise (sp?) so I grew up thinking it was the coolest name, but if the OP doesn't like Sid/Cyd she'd be silly to use Sidonie. I confess I'd not heard of it before this thread and presumed it was a variation on Sidney.

BonnieWeeJeannieMcCall · 30/11/2014 23:42

I think it sounds lovely with a French accent.
