welsh baby girl name in England

My husband is Welsh but we currently live in England. We would, however, like to choose a Welsh name for our little girl that goes with our surname, Howells. We are looking for a name that is easy to recognise and pronounce outside of Wales. Any suggestions welcome. Thank you!

Mabli is MAB-lee

JemimaMuddledUp · 25/11/2014 22:05

I'm called Delyth and am forever having to explain it to English people, so steer clear of that!

Cerys seems to be quite easy - thanks to Cerys Matthews, and I have a niece called Elin who lives in the SE of England and doesn't have any problems.

GoAndDoSomeWork · 25/11/2014 22:29

don't call her anything beginning with Rh as if you're husband is a welsh speaker he will be forever annoyed with the Rh sound being changed to an R sound - Rhiannon is not pronounced Riannon!

redrubyindigo · 25/11/2014 22:47

Olwen

FrankelandFilly · 25/11/2014 22:52

You could try Alys (Alice). I also love Angharad.

My dad's aunt was Myfanwy, she was known as Mivvy.

Fanjango · 25/11/2014 22:53

Tegwen or the anglicised Teagan.

ByeByeButterfly · 25/11/2014 22:54

My favourite Welsh name is Seren - stands out as Welsh, isn't hard to pronounce or spell and has a lovely meaning.

SlinkyB · 25/11/2014 22:59

Gwen is my favourite Welsh girls name ever. Never got to use it, so you can have it op Smile

suze28 · 25/11/2014 23:03

DD2 is Carys Bethan but we do love the name Seren too. DH is Welsh, I'm English and we live in England. We get many compliments about Carys' name.

ILiveOnABuildsite · 26/11/2014 08:46

Cerys or Seren would be my favourite choice.

and I'm now going to have to reassess my choice for the bump-inhabitant's name, based on GoAndDoSomeWork 's accurate assessment of the likelihood of an Rh at the start being mispronounced and driving me mad.

they can't pronounce my eldest child's name as it is, he's Arwyn! And I could forgive the 4 year olds, I'm talking about the teachers. It's Arrrwyn, not Aaahwin!

SunnyBaudelaire · 26/11/2014 12:48

please not Angharad the English pron would just mash it up

SunnyBaudelaire · 26/11/2014 12:49

yes but there is no rolled R in English Ebwy....

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 26/11/2014 12:51

I know, but they manage it for "pirates week" going "arrrrr!"
and the school teaches french...

it would be nice if they could at least attempt to sound like there is an R in there.

SunnyBaudelaire · 26/11/2014 12:53

lol I bet you live in the south east of England -

momb · 26/11/2014 12:53

Carys/Cerys, Megan, Bethan, Rhiannan are the most common ariound our way I htink.

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 26/11/2014 12:56

not in the south east... I'm in the midlands!

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 26/11/2014 13:03

if I wanted to really be evil I could name the bump-inhabitant "Rhighantona" - a fore-runner of Rhiannon - and insist on correct pronounciation.
But then not even her father could get it right, and that's just sad.

I had to correct people that my second child is "Taran" not "ta-run" this morning again too...

FreezerBird · 26/11/2014 13:07

Agree about the Rh.

Hakluyt · 26/11/2014 13:10

You do realise that if you have to correct people's pronunciation of your props if names the child will also have to- for the next 90 years? Is that something you really want to saddle him or her with?

spiderlight · 26/11/2014 13:10

Seren, Cerys, Carys, Rhidan, Rhiannon, Lowri, Angharad, Cadi (Welsh form of Katie).
