Or something else? To go with Imogen.

How do you pronounce Linnet? I have to say I clicked on the thread thinking the OP was going for an funny spelling of Lynette but from other comments that obviously isn't the case. But I can't see how you pronounce it if not the same as Lynette other than Lynn-it which doesn't sound great (and makes me agree with the mollusc/ tampon comments!).

Love Linnet - big fan of the Green Knowe books and the name's always been on my 'would use if I was feeling brave' list!

Only reservations are that it risks being mistaken for Lynette, which I don't like nearly as much, and it sounds a bit like a character from Cold Comfort Farm! Blythe is quite nice too but I can't warm to it as much for some reason.

Pronounced LIN-it. Yes, love Green Knowe and love Linnet's character in the book - we'd probably read it aloud together and perhaps she'd see Linnet as a role model!

Which one is more unusual? I've liked them both so long I can't tell. If she doesn't want a crazy name she can always use Lin which I do quite like. Blythe would probably get Bee.

We had a dog called Clover so that's out! Hubbie would have liked Juliet but I feel she'd go through life being asked where Romeo was. If it's a boy we're having Gabriel BTW.

Thanks for comments. Please keep em coming as I still haven't a clue!

Thought I'd be using them both until recently - we miscarried twins. So choosing just one of these names is bittersweet.

I love them both!

I know an adult Linnet and thought it was a lovely name when I met her.

Blythe makes me think of the actress Blythe Duff. I've always liked her name.

TempsPerdu · 20/11/2014 14:10

I love CCF, PrivatePike, but I was thinking specific of Rennet, who isn't the most fortunate of characters! Smile

TempsPerdu · 20/11/2014 14:12

And saturnvista I think our taste in names (and books!) is very similar - love all your girl choices, and Gabriel is my all-time favourite boys' name.

DishwasherDogs · 20/11/2014 14:13

Love Linnet, from reading the Green Knowe books.

Linnet - in my day it was Lynette. Sounds a bit chavvy.

Liesel sounds too much like weasel, and is only OK if you have several brothers and sistes, and live on an Alp, with a singing nun nanny

Linnea - you'd be forever saying "no - Lih-NAY-ah". Also brand of clothing.

Clover isn't bad - very "What Katy did).

I know an Imogen who has a sister Phoebe.

wizzler · 20/11/2014 17:36

Love Blythe but "Blyth Spartan" keeps popping into my head

Kundry · 20/11/2014 18:16

Linnet is a lovely name but it's a bird not a musical instrument.

ngocbao2512 · 20/11/2014 18:26

I like baby name Linnet because an extremely hot beautiful girl who is loved by many. one who is unique, funny, and a unique independent person who knows how to have a great time, extremely funny . she has lots of friends and is always there for them.

Trisarahtops · 20/11/2014 18:32

I really like Blythe.

(I know a few people called Imogen - they have sisters called Rowan, Audrey and Genevieve)

sejt · 20/11/2014 20:17

both nice. prefer Linnet. Blythe good strong name too.

Anjou · 20/11/2014 22:07

Is Linnet pronounced linn-it or Lynette? The first sounds a bit like 'lint' and is a touch dull, the second sounds quite dated and a tad country & western. Sorry! I'm really not a fan of any 'Lyn' type names.

Blythe on the other hand is my absolute favourite girls name! So pretty and elegant. I couldn't have it as our surname starts with a J. Not a great idea to give a kid the initials BJ!

Sapphire387 · 20/11/2014 23:00

I like Blythe, a lot.

Linnet makes me think of the song 'my old man said follow the van', but maybe that's just me, my mum's a bit cockney and sings it to my kids...

badtime · 20/11/2014 23:45

Anjou, Linnet rhymes with minute (unit of time, rather than adjective meaning small). I have never heard anyone get confused between 'minute' and 'mint', so I think the 'lint' thing is a non issue.

Riverland · 21/11/2014 01:54

Emmet or Blaise?

TsukuruTazaki · 21/11/2014 02:10

I prefer Blythe to linnet but not crazy about either.

What about

Harriet
Emmeline
Josephine (Josie or posy)
Helena
Iris
Beatrice
Rowan

Jennifersrabbit · 21/11/2014 03:01

Linnet.

Story of Gareth in King Arthur as well as Green Knowe. Great name.

doodlewitch · 21/11/2014 09:45

Blythe - All wrong, unisex, popular surname. Sounds like it's from a modern day American soap opera, in a bad way! A bit common too.

Linnet - horrible sounding name, not in the style of Green Knowe at all I always thought. The etymology is doubtful also, as it's thought as likely to be a variant of Lynette. Plethora of awful nice nick names too, Lin, Nit, Lint...

findingherfeet · 21/11/2014 10:04

I like both, prefer spelling Lynette mind

GerundTheBehemoth · 21/11/2014 10:07

Linnet and Lynette would be pronounced differently, no? Linnet the bird rhymes with 'limit'.

findingherfeet · 21/11/2014 10:11

Ooohhh right...nope then I don't like it!
