Is the name Ocean for a girl too wierd?

Dp and I struggle to agree on/like the same names. (He thinks my choices are too odd, I think his are too plain.) But the other night we both said we liked the name Ocean for a girl. Is this too wierd to actually call your child?
Grateful for any opinions :)

Yes.

Sorry.

sunflower49 · 08/11/2014 13:24

I quite like it :)

Viviennemary · 08/11/2014 13:24

It's quite a nice sounding word. And you could possibly get away with it if you were a rock star. But no. It's just not worth the funny looks. Or the thoughts if your friends are polite!

SorrelForbes · 08/11/2014 13:24

HMS

SorrelForbes · 08/11/2014 13:26

Sorry, pressed post too soon.

HMS Ocean was the first thing that sprang to mind but then we have Navy connections Grin.

Know an Oceana, whom as far as I know has no issues with her name.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 08/11/2014 13:27

Ocean in english = weird and sound like a male name

Océanne is a nice french name though!

RJnomore · 08/11/2014 13:29

I like it. But I'm a bit hippy dippy sometimes.

TheWhispersOfTheGods · 08/11/2014 13:29

I love it, but wouldn't use it, its a little out there for me - in that I'm very not an earth mother! Where are you? I'm in London, in a place that I could use it - if you're in a less diverse area not so much.

What about Ottilie, River (leas out there somehow), Orlaith?

yazz21 · 08/11/2014 13:33

That was my thinking, I thought it sounded pretty, but was unsure about teasing/being too strange for an actual person/wouldn't suit her. When I was at school there was a girl a couple of years below me called Ocean and she was mixed race (asian) and it really seemed to suit her.

Chavvy

yazz21 · 08/11/2014 13:36

I'm in suffolk, so less diverse area! How would you pronounce Oceanne? (Sorry can't do the accent on my phone!)

I met a baby called Ocean at a class and it didn't work for me, it just didn't sound like a name. But it's your baby, your choice.

Castlemilk · 08/11/2014 13:37

Well, it's very unusual, but not unknown, and certainly not bad in any way. A very nice sound. No unfortunate associations. No bad nicknames. Very pretty.

So if you both like it, go for it. It's one of those names that I reckon a lot of people would laugh at until they got to know a child who had the name, in which case it would very quickly become normal.

ILoveYouBaby · 08/11/2014 13:40

I think it's lovely.

Catthiefkeith · 08/11/2014 13:40

My (Kiwi) friend has a dd called Ocean. She is Oshie for short, however her father is Polynesian, so she is quite exotic looking and it really suits her.

ghostvitruvius · 08/11/2014 13:42

I know a little Ocean and love it!

yazz21 · 08/11/2014 13:53

Thanks for the opinions so far, glad there is some in favour of it! Just wanted some impartial opinions as we hadn't mentioned it to anyone. I'm mixed race (father Somalian) have a dd already who is tanned with curly hair, thought that would help with being able to pull it off.

Yes. It'd be a mean thing to do.

andadietcoke · 08/11/2014 13:55

I would pronounce Océanne 'oh-say-anne' but I'm not French...

Floggingmolly · 08/11/2014 13:55

Surely if you have to ask a bunch of strangers if the name you've chosen for your baby is "too weird" the question has basically answered itself? for clarity, yes it is

WrappedInABlankie · 08/11/2014 13:58

What about Osha? I went to school with a girl called that and it suited her

scarletforya · 08/11/2014 13:58

Sounds a bit like the Irish name Oisín. Not sure I've spelt that right. It's usually a boys name.
