Is the name Ocean for a girl too wierd?

Dp and I struggle to agree on/like the same names. (He thinks my choices are too odd, I think his are too plain.) But the other night we both said we liked the name Ocean for a girl. Is this too wierd to actually call your child?
Grateful for any opinions :)

So your DP is happy with initials B.O.G but B.A.G is a problem?

(You know "bog" is slang for "toilet", right?)

I know an Ocean, it wouldn't be my first choice for a name because I am boring but it works wonderfully for her

TheHorseHasBolted · 08/11/2014 18:48

I like it, but more for a boy, because the only one I've met is a boy. I think I'd use Oceania as the girl equivalent.

childrensservant · 08/11/2014 18:51

I know a y7 Ocean. I've also known a Storm, Summer, Sunny, Skye. These have all recently gone through our village primary school.
Never thought of Ocean as a weird name actually, as the girl is lovely.
I say go for it.

BuckskinnedAstronaut · 08/11/2014 18:56

Atlanta was considered as a middle name for OP's DD1, Bigfoot. Ocean is being considered as a first name for her DD2.

whitechocolatestars · 08/11/2014 19:02

Do you have any connection to the sea? Personally I don't like the name, especially if there is no connection at all but I can see how in some areas it could work. If she ends up being very creative it could be great, but it would be more of a hindrance to her if she chooses a slightly more conservative path in life.

However, if there is a connection with the sea, some other names that are a little more well known but not common could be:

Coral
Marina
Kai (unisex)
Pearl
Nerida / Nerissa
Adrianne

and lots of others.

There is a girl we know slightly age 12 who is called Oceania. She is a very beautiful girl and the name seems perfect for her.

Thanks for all the replies :) Sorry hadn't posted for a while.
We don't have any connection to the sea. Yes BuckedSkinnedAstronaut had it right. Atlanta considered as a middle name for dd1 and Ocean a first name for dd2.
Coral is actually another name we are considering, though I think I preferred it more when we were thinking about it for dd1.

Quite a few people have mentioned knowing a boy Ocean, I hadn't actually heard of it being used for a boys name before.
I will have a think on Oceania though as its definately clear its feminine.

Where did you come up with this as it is the name my 7 yr ds keeps bringing up for my new baby due in march?

yazz21 · 08/11/2014 20:23

Ha ha that's quite funny as I'm also due in March! Grin
My dp came out with it quite randomly, and I thought it was really pretty and remembered there was a girl a few years below me at school called Ocean; and it really suited her.

I know an ocean, a girl (in a northern town) and I think it's beautiful

MelonOfTroy · 15/11/2014 20:22

I quite like it, it grows on you.

I met a Mauritia the other day, she's in her 50's and it sounds great.

hiccupgirl · 15/11/2014 22:05

I've come across an Ocean-Mae recently aged 9. I have to say I didn't think it was a good name.

Coral would be a much better choice if you really want sea themed names.

toobreathless · 15/11/2014 23:28

Really like it.

LardyDa · 15/11/2014 23:57

I know a 20 year old Ocean and I like it. It sounded a little unusual when I first heard it but I got used to it quickly. It's a pretty name.

klog · 16/11/2014 00:00

horrible

klog · 16/11/2014 00:01

were the boys called Ocean actually called Oísín by any chance?

baskingseals · 16/11/2014 09:35

I love it. Beautiful name, like all the associations.

burgatroyd · 16/11/2014 10:34

I know a five year old Ocean. We live in a quaint village. Everyone loves her name, including myself.

It is not weird in the slightest.
