I love the name Isla but it is far to overused/popular for me but I heard the name AYLA today (pronounced
A-La) and think its a nice alternative.
Abit of googling suggests that in some countries this would still b pronounced as Eye-La but to my UK eyes I would read it with the Ay sound.

She would be Ayla Mabel W..

Any other similar suggestions very welcome, i like short names, surname is long.
Thanks x

Ayla Mabel..... how pretty. (but she would get very fed up having to spell it and explain the correct pronunciation.

Orla?
Ola?
Ella?

CaptainAnkles · 24/10/2014 19:48

I like it. Not fond of Mabel, but Ayla is nice.

squoosh · 24/10/2014 19:50

Ayla will definitely be a name that will need to spelt out on a daily basis and to be honest I think it's so similar to Isla that you might as well pick Isla.

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 24/10/2014 19:53

I think they go beautifully together. Love it as it is - go for it!

LoveWillTearUsApart · 24/10/2014 19:55

Ayla by The Maccabees is one of my favourite songs.

Ayla Mabel sounds perfect Smile

ARGHtoAHHH · 24/10/2014 19:55

How about Lyla?

RealisticnotPessimistic · 24/10/2014 19:55

My friend has just had a daughter called Ayla but pronounced Isla so you may find she does get called Isla rather than AY-la

CaulkheadUpNorth · 24/10/2014 19:57

I know an Ayla. People seem to often pronounce it Isla. She is an adult, and it's definitely not a name I've heard within children.

chocoluvva · 24/10/2014 20:02

Btw - look up illustrations by Mabel Lucie Attwell if you haven't seen any. Smile

WineSpider · 24/10/2014 20:04

I know an Ayda pronounced eye-da. Not if your surname is Downe though.

espa · 24/10/2014 20:05

The only Ayla I've come across was pronounced Isla.

espa · 24/10/2014 20:06

And she would be in her 20s now.

yummytummy · 24/10/2014 20:08

Its nice makes me think of the clan of the cave bear books, ayla was main character and a good strong woman

Loveleopardprint · 24/10/2014 20:13

What about Myla?

jazzyjenbo · 24/10/2014 20:17

Wow lots of response already thanks so much.
I know mabel isnt everyones taste, its my nanas name and she is 94 and still going strong!
I've never heard of an Alya which is why i was drawn to it when i heard it. I can see how ppl will mistake it for Isla whilst that name is at the peak of popularity but somehow A-la flows nicer off my tongue than Eye-la.
Also like the spelling Aylah so it reads more like A-lar.

I know a little Ayla and as far as I know her name never gets confused with Isla. Most people would pronounce it as it's spelt rather than with an eye sound. Go for it, it's lovely.

soaccidentprone · 24/10/2014 20:59

Ayla is the name of the main character in the Jean Auel series of books.

tywysogesgymraeg · 24/10/2014 21:01

I know an Alaya. I think that's pretty.

loislines · 24/10/2014 22:23

I think I'd naturally pronounce it like Isla but you'd only need to correct people once and I've spent a lifetime telling people how to spell /pronounce my name.

What about Ida? Ada? Love Mabel- my daughter's name.

loislines · 24/10/2014 22:27

Meant to say, having to tell people how to say or spell my name never bothered me.

jazzyjenbo · 24/10/2014 22:51

Thanks again everyone, it is now a definite contender and dh actually likes it! Almost everything else i've suggested has been met with a 'no'!
Lois.. I think we have similar taste, your name is also on our list (my other 2 dc's have biblical names so yours ties inWink)

Which spelling do you like best please Ayla or Aylah?

I know a lovely little Ayla and it's a sweet name. Not heard of it being confused with Isla.

Riverland · 24/10/2014 23:14

Mabel is a lovely name I've not heard in use.

Funny how Isobel is so common, and Mabel so rare.
