I am expecting a DD very soon, and we have a long list of names but have not chosen one yet. I like older names that have meaning but realise that some of these names might carry unintended impressions. Please be very honest in your opinion of each name; if a name makes you think of someone intelligent or elegant please say so, but if a name makes you think of someone low class or uneducated please also say so. It would also be helpful if you know that a name may have a different meaning in other languages.

Thank you!

Seraphina (Hebrew: highest order of angels; ardent, fiery)

Vesper (Latin: evening star)

Salomeh (Hebrew: peaceful, tranquil)

Imogen (beloved)

Astrid (Nordic: fair and beautiful)

Evelyn (Hebrew: life)

Beatrix (Latin: blessed voyager)

Estella (Latin: star)

Xanthe (Greek: golden, fair)

Pandora (Greek: gifted)

Genevieve (French: of the tribe/race of women; protector of Paris from Attila the Hun)

Seraphina (Hebrew: highest order of angels; ardent, fiery)

"sorry, is that with an f?"
Vesper (Latin: evening star)
"I also have a scooter!"
Salomeh (Hebrew: peaceful, tranquil)
"sorry, with an h? Where?"
Imogen (beloved)
"aw, my niece is also called Imogen. And my neighbour's daughter"
Astrid (Nordic: fair and beautiful)
gets my vote!
Evelyn (Hebrew: life)
gets my vote!
Beatrix (Latin: blessed voyager)
gets my vote!
Estella (Latin: star)
"are you named after the Charles Dickens character then?"
Xanthe (Greek: golden, fair)
"is that with two x's or one? Or three?"
Pandora (Greek: gifted)
"want to see my box?"
Genevieve (French: of the tribe/race of women; protector of Paris from Attila the Hun)
"is it okay if I call you jenny or Ginny or some such?"

NickiFury · 17/10/2014 16:36

I don't like any of them except Estella and I would change that to Estelle, which is one of my favourite names and was a serious contender for dd.

LizzieMint · 17/10/2014 16:41

Wasn't Salome the one who demanded john the baptist's head on a platter?
I love Imogen, estella and Xanthe.
Vesper makes me think of scooters too.

vichill · 17/10/2014 16:41

I like Astrid, Genenieve and Imogen. Top 3 a bit try too hard.

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 17/10/2014 16:43

Seraphina (Hebrew: highest order of angels; ardent, fiery)
Not bad, pretty. Makes me think of a piano tutor.

Vesper (Latin: evening star)
Pretty sure this means wasp. I like it, and I like the wasp meaning even more.

Salomeh (Hebrew: peaceful, tranquil)
No meh.

Imogen (beloved)
It's ok

Astrid (Nordic: fair and beautiful)
Only if you are Nordic.

Evelyn (Hebrew: life)
Evie is quite popular at the moment.

Beatrix (Latin: blessed voyager)
It's ok. Potter.

Estella (Latin: star)
Horrible girl from Great Expectations.

Xanthe (Greek: golden, fair)
Quite nice.

Pandora (Greek: gifted)
I like this one, people might think of Adrian Mole but her generation wouldn't know who he was. Nice nickname potential.

Genevieve (French: of the tribe/race of women; protector of Paris from Attila the Hun)
Surprisingly well used, this one. If you're wanting an unusual name, this isn't it. NN is usually Genna.

Stripylikeatiger · 17/10/2014 16:45

I think it's a really nice and interesting set of names, I especially like Beatrice, Imogen and xanthe.

Is your dd likely to be fair her entire life? I'd avoid names which mean fair/dark unless your pretty much certain that will be what she is.

AuntieStella · 17/10/2014 16:47

Seraphina: I like it, but do think of the witch in the Philli Zpullan books (which I think will be read for years to come).

Vesper: don't like. Not really an anglophone name (and closeto 'wasp' in German)

Salomeh: presumably a variant of Salome, the Biblical femme fatale?

Imogen: lovely

Astrid: not to my taste, but a good name

Evelyn: owing to Evelyn Waugh, remains unisex

Beatrix: lovely

Estella: not to my taste, but a good name

Xanthe: ok (could be a bit pretentious)

Pandora: like, but Adrian Mole

Genevieve: like

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 17/10/2014 16:48

Salomeh will get called Salami forever.

captainproton · 17/10/2014 16:53

Seraphina: pretentious
Vesper: Moped?
Salomeh: Salami
Imogen: popular
Astrid: ok
Evelyn:pretty
Beatrix: ok, makes me think peter rabbit
Estella : Estelle
Xanthe:reminds me of a rundown nightclub I once went to in the 90s
Pandora: and her box
Genevieve: Ok if you like Jenny.

squoosh · 17/10/2014 17:12

Seraphina - frilly

Vesper - evening prayers. would be surprised to see it used as a person's name

Salomeh - blood thirsty minx (I quite like the name secretly though)

Imogen - nice if a bit dull

Astrid - not for me

Evelyn - nice if a bit dull

Beatrix - nope

Estella - love

Xanthe - nice and hippyish

Pandora - she'll suffer endless gags about her box. Also, Adrian Mole.

Genevieve - frilly

ByeByeButterfly · 17/10/2014 17:24

Seraphina: It's a pretty name but could come across as a bit stuffy/upper class. I do love the nickname Sephy though.

Vesper: My first thoughts is that it's strange. Not bad per se, just strange as I've never heard of it before. It's got a lovely meaning. Something I'd say would be nice as a middle name, but probably wouldn't risk it for a first name.

Salomeh: Pretty name but not sure if many people would be able to spell it properly but I think it's a pretty name.

Imogen: It's an OK name but reminds me of Imogen Thomas which isn't the classiest of connotations. It's certainly not a horrible name, though.

Astrid: I find the D at the end makes the name sound particularly harsh. I think Astra is lovely, but it does remind me of a car brand.

Evelyn: No specific connotations with this name. I like it quite a bit and many nickname potential Eve, Eva, Lynn.

Beatrix: I don't mind this name although it's not a name I'd personally chose. It reminds me of Beatrix Potter.

Estella: A very pretty name and reminds me of Estella from Great Expectations which I studied for my English GCSE. Pretty, nature type than that isn't too strange looking.

Xanthe: Lovely name but I imagine there will be about 3 different ways to pronounce it.

Pandora: I like it for a name for a children's TV character or similar but if I heard it on a child I'd naturally think Pandora's Box.

Genevieve: Pretty name though I think it would have to be nicknamed most of the time as it's quite long. Makes me think of Camelot and Arthur's love. Could use Ginny, Gen, Vivi etc for nicknames.

I'm sorry if you just wanted name connotations but added some personal opinions in there too. Some unique and pretty names you have chosen here. I hope you don't mind the suggestions when possible.

My top 3 would be: Estella, Evelyn and Genevieve.

I hope that helps. :)

moxon · 17/10/2014 17:40

auntie
Philli Zpullan sounds like a self-help author. Grin

Frikadellen · 17/10/2014 17:41

We have similar name tastes op as a few of yours were on my short list for my dds

My favourites (and what was all on our short list ) are

Seraphina
Estella and
Xanthe

I wouldn't do Pandora due to the whole box situation. Shame though as it is pretty.

For me Evelyn, Genevieve, Beatrix and Imogen are names you will regular come across in schools. Not names that will make any go " oh unusual" (this may or many not have any issue for you :) )

Vesper and Salomeh I like both. I think Vesper will be difficult for a child to have as a name but I do like it. Salomeh is gorgeous but yes I do think you have to consider the biblical aspect.

The only one I do not like is Astrid , However I grew up in Denmark and it has associations from school. So likely I am not the best to comment on that name.

moxon · 17/10/2014 17:45

frikadellen are you Sandi Toksvig? You're not as funny on here as I'd've hoped...Grin

nyldn · 17/10/2014 19:42

definitely astrid

AWombWithoutAFoof · 17/10/2014 21:26

I love Seraphina, as a sound it's so beautiful.

Xanthe, love the look of it and the sound is growing on me.

Astrid, love the Scandi vibe. Feels hipster, a bit like naming a daughter Biba.

Not keen on the others, sorry.

Anjou · 17/10/2014 21:42

That's an interesting list with some lovely names on it. Is this your first DC? I ask because the meaning of names was something that was on my radar (in a pretty small though to be honest) during my first pregnancy but I really think it's something that is nowhere near as important to whether it 'fits'. Fits your family, social circles, way of life and most importantly, your beautiful little bundle when she arrives. Go for what you love.

Of your list;

Vesper. Amazing name. You may like to have a think about a nn for when she's wee, as it's pretty grown up.

Imogen. Lovely. Nice nn's.

Astrid. Also lovely.

Genevieve. Nice. Good choice of nn's too - Gen, Ginny, Vivi etc.

I'd love to be called any of these names.

Good luck!

chariotsofire · 17/10/2014 21:59

Not read other replies but I love them all except for Beatrix and Evelyn.

Lweji · 17/10/2014 22:05

Seraphina NO

Vesper Hmmmm But, no

Salomeh Not sure

Imogen Yes

Astrid Yes

Evelyn Yes, but still too old fashioned IMO

Beatrix Yes

Estella not bad, but no

Xanthe no

Pandora yes

Genevieve Yes

TempsPerdu · 17/10/2014 23:31

Great set of names here - lots I like (plus a few I really don't!)

My two pennyworth:

Seraphina - very pretty, but way two frilly for me - I imagine someone who's a bit 'precious' and high maintenance. Also asking for trouble if she can't quite up to her name's angelic image...

Vesper - Bond girl, monks' evening prayers or prize racehorse. Lovely sound, though!

Salomeh - prefer Salome spelling, but dodgy Biblical associations would rule it out for me. I'd imagine an exotic femme fatale.

Imogen - nice but overused at the mo - I know loads of little Imogens.

Astrid - love this (and Scandi names in general). It's strong and intelligent sounding - a bit clunky, but in a good way Smile I know a lovely four-year-old Astrid who goes by 'Asti'.

Evelyn - fine, but a little on the dull/dated side. Evie is overdone now.

Beatrix - Bluestocking. I picture an older lady who's something of a battle-axe!

Estella - really like this, and think it's underused (possibly because of the not very likeable character in Great Expectations).

Xanthe - love it - my favourite on your list. The X makes it intriguing, without being too 'out there'. Slightly artistic, quirky, hippyish vibe.

Pandora - Adrian Mole's treacle-haired girlfriend. It sounds 'heavy' to me. And the Pandora's Box myth isn't the best one to be associated with imo. Pan makes a cute nickname though!

Genevieve - really like it; it's grown on me lately. Lots of good potential nicknames (Ginny, Vivi etc) and a sophisticated (but not weird) sound.

Personally I'd narrow it down to Astrid, Estella, Xanthe and Genevieve, with Xanthe being my top choice.

TempsPerdu · 17/10/2014 23:32

(Sorry - too frilly. It's late...)
