I am expecting a DD very soon, and we have a long list of names but have not chosen one yet. I like older names that have meaning but realise that some of these names might carry unintended impressions. Please be very honest in your opinion of each name; if a name makes you think of someone intelligent or elegant please say so, but if a name makes you think of someone low class or uneducated please also say so. It would also be helpful if you know that a name may have a different meaning in other languages.

Thank you!

Seraphina (Hebrew: highest order of angels; ardent, fiery)

Vesper (Latin: evening star)

Salomeh (Hebrew: peaceful, tranquil)

Imogen (beloved)

Astrid (Nordic: fair and beautiful)

Evelyn (Hebrew: life)

Beatrix (Latin: blessed voyager)

Estella (Latin: star)

Xanthe (Greek: golden, fair)

Pandora (Greek: gifted)

Genevieve (French: of the tribe/race of women; protector of Paris from Attila the Hun)

I like them all except Xanthe and bit unsure about Vesper.

Pimbeche · 18/10/2014 07:17

Anjou - This is our second, we have a DS, but this is our first DS. Thank you for your advice!

I like Astrid and Imogen best.

BeattieBow · 18/10/2014 07:30

I like Beatrice (not Beatrix though).

ALso like Pandora a lot, but not sure about the box connection.

EugenesAxe · 18/10/2014 07:32

My favourites are Imogen, Astrid, Beatrix and Genevieve (latter particularly).

None of them particularly make me think 'stupid and/or low class', but I have some issues with the following:

Seraphina - too twee.
Vesper - an evening service of prayer (albeit with an s) before a name.
Salomeh - agree only seen written Salome, she asked for John the Baptist's head; at worse an evil bitch and best a spoilt airhead.
Estella - David Copperfield.
Pandora - bit of a bleak Greek myth, also too Adrian Mole.

EugenesAxe · 18/10/2014 07:35

Arse I had a feeling that was wrong! Yes yes, Great Expectations not sodding David Copperfield.

Beatrice is very common in my experience; love Beatrix, makes me think of Rossetti.

confusedandemployed · 18/10/2014 07:40

Absolutely adore Astrid. It was on my list for DD. Quite like the others but I saw Astrid and that was it for me.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 18/10/2014 07:57

Seraphina - witch in the Dark Materials trilogy. Lovely name though.

Vesper - scooter or Bond girl

Salomeh - salami jokes ahoy!

Imogen - I like, is popular though

Astrid - also nice. And fair doesn't have to mean fair-haired

Evelyn - again like, Evie vv popular though

Beatrix - Potter. It just doesn't sound that pretty to my ear

Estella - that annoying character in Great Expectations

Xanthe - nice enough

Pandora - No. See posts above

Genevieve - beautiful name, now how the heck do you spell it?

Pimbeche · 18/10/2014 10:03

Oops, I meant this is our first DD. :-)

All of your opinions are great. How do you think these names would be treated internationally?

Love love love pandora and Genevieve!

squeak2392 · 19/10/2014 22:10

Seraphina - very pretty, lots of nns.

Vesper - sounds nice, but makes me think of bees and the scooter

Salomeh - not sure.

Imogen - gorgeous

Astrid - pretty and unusual

Evelyn - pretty

Beatrix - I don't really like the x sound in girls names. Not bad, but I prefer Beatrice

Estella - pretty but very flouncy

Xanthe - lovely

Pandora - nice but something not quite right

Genevieve - gorgeous.

Surfsup1 · 20/10/2014 04:09

Seraphina - OK - a little bit tizzy for me but not bad at all.

Vesper - is a scooter from Italy

Salomeh - very pretty - feels quite culturally specific to me?

Imogen - a bit 80s but pretty

Astrid - nerdy but nice

Evelyn - beautiful!

Beatrix - pretty good - very of the moment.

Estella - prefer Stella I think? Or maybe not - cool name

Xanthe - really cool - exotic without being ott.

Pandora - too many jokes about her box

Genevieve - fab name with great nns.

DecaffTastesWeird · 20/10/2014 17:08

I like Astrid best. Not mad about the others though except maybe Imogen.

Squirm · 20/10/2014 18:10

I like Pandora and Beatrix.

Pandora37 · 20/10/2014 19:21

Seraphina - Makes me think of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's daughter. Otherwise I have no associations with it. I think it's very pretty and elegant.

Vesper - Makes me think of snakes. Maybe it's because it sounds similar to viper. I agree it's quite Bond Girlish.

Salomeh - Ooooh, now this would be a very brave choice! I actually really like it and the history surrounding it is so interesting. There was a Salome in the New Testament who was present at the crucifixion and was with the group of women who found Jesus' empty tomb so there are positive associations with it. Also, the girl who danced for the head of John the Baptist isn't actually named in the Bible. There have been some critiques stating that 1.) it wasn't a sexual or erotic dance that she did and 2.) she was foolish rather than evil and forced into it. Anyway, the vast majority of people aren't going to know this and instead will just wonder why you named your daughter after a Biblical femme fatale. It's really akin to naming your daughter Jezebel (although there are arguments that she was misconstrued as well but I won't go into them.) Wink Why the h on the end though? I think you'll be making life very difficult for her with that spelling on top of all the negative cultural associations.

Imogen - Nice, fairly mainstream. Might make people think of Imogen Thomas (former Big Brother contestant and glamour model who had an affair with Ryan Giggs). I think Imogen's popular enough not to make people think of her though.

Astrid - I really like it. I know some Americans who say it sounds like ass turd in their accents but I don't think that will be a problem here.

Evelyn - Nice. Getting more popular.

Beatrix - I like it.

Estella - Very pretty. My main association is with the character in Great Expectations, which may be negative to some but not anywhere near as bad as Salome is.

Xanthe - Nice, seems to be the "go to" unusual name for people who post birth announcements in the Daily Telegraph.

Pandora - Well obviously I like it but another very culturally loaded one. She might get tired of Pandora's box jokes. I don't think it's as unusable as Salome though and people happily call their daughters Eve when she's supposed to have brought sin into the world so I think it's okay.

Genevieve - Lovely

I'm afraid a few of your names do make me think of stage names used by burlesque dancers, which I'm assuming isn't the image you're going for. So I'd ditch Salomeh, Pandora and Vesper. It seems to me like you want an unusual, classic name that seems fairly "exotic." I'd go with Seraphina. Unusual but heard of and if she doesn't like having a long name she's got some nickname options.

lisucbgiberiocnha · 20/10/2014 21:43

seraphine is very nice. In the same vein I adore Josephine and Delphine

KERALA1 · 21/10/2014 22:20

Please not eve. One third of girls in dds class named this and I help at a baby group and still the eves keep coming! This name is full.

Belazu84 · 22/10/2014 23:31

Love Imogen and Xanthe. Both elegant and cool. Salomeh has bad connotations. Honestly, never liked the sound of Astrid much. All the others would work nicely!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 22/10/2014 23:42

Anything except Imogen.

Sooo many baby Imogen's about at the moment & it isn't even a nice name.

Ludways · 22/10/2014 23:48

I have a French friend Genevieve and it's is pronounced differently in English, I simply can't get my head round the English way, it sounds do wrong.

Imogen, I know 3

I can't remember the others as I'm on mobile app and can't copy.

Thank you!

Imogen - nice

Astrid - a bit harsh sounding

Evelyn - the most boring Great Aunt in the universe (however, i know a very cute Evie)

Beatrix - OK

Estella - I have a soft spot for anything star related

Xanthe - like

Pandora - box/character in the Asterix books

Genevieve - fear it would just become Jen, but it's great (only met one, she was Australian and stunning. Dark hair, and looks that could have been of French)

ElephantsNeverForgive · 23/10/2014 00:01

Sorry, cut and paste on an iPhone is horrible.

Stokey · 23/10/2014 11:27

Seraphina - maternity clothes! But it is very pretty
Vesper - Sanitary towels, evening prayers - would avoid
Salome - we had a girl called this at school and I was always surprised her parents had called her after someone who demanded John the Baptist's head (didn't realise it was apocryphal pandora37)
Imogen - pretty, classic, very popular compared with your other choices
Astrid - lovely, nordic
Evelyn - I associate with Evelyn Waugh so think of as masculine - and a lot of Eves and Evies out there
Beatrix - bit boring compared to your other choices, quite popular
Estella - Great Ex, heartless cow but pretty name
Xanthe - good if you think she'll be blonde , I thought it meant yellow so avoided for my likely to be dark DDs
Pandora - Greek myth, bit dark but there is hope left in the box.
Genevieve - elegant but shortened to Gen not so much.

So Astrid would be my choice from your selection

I prefer Serena or Sabrina to Seraphina.

megs7 · 23/10/2014 14:11

Seraphina - too frilly for me

Vesper - scooters, evening prayers, wasps (vespa = hornet)

Salomeh - really dislike this, sorry, especially with the 'meh'

Imogen -

Astrid - I considered this for our daughter, but we are in America and I can't get 'Astro-glide' (ahem, personal lubricant) out of my head.

Evelyn - really nice

Beatrix - lovely

Estella - Great Expectations

Xanthe - OK

Pandora - Box

Genevieve - Also very nice! I know of two Genevieves, one goes by Evie and the other by 'Gene'
