Just how bad are the initials BJ?

Last name starts with a J. I had previously made a rule that we therefore can't use a name that starts with a B, but DH and I like very few of the same boys names and one we both like, if we could use it, is Benjamin (Ben). Would we, as I suspect, be dooming him to a lifetime of teasing or would it not be that bad?

As it happens I know a Ben Jones but never noticed his initials until I saw them on his sports top, but I met him post-school age which is where I imagine the problems will occur.

Ummm.... I wouldn't.

You could ameliorate it by giving him a middle name, perhaps, but it would have to start with A :)

debka · 17/10/2014 13:11

Bad. My bil's initials are bj and even though I am 34 years old I still snigger.

MrsEames · 17/10/2014 13:12

Put it this way ...

I'm a 30 year old mother and even I want to crack a joke. He'd have no chance at school.

BeckAndCall · 17/10/2014 13:12

Until you mentioned it, it didn't even occur to me what it meant. i wouldn't have though many people would immediately think of it either.

Solution would be to add a middle name so it'll always be BGJ or BAJ or whatever.....

jeee · 17/10/2014 13:13

No. Just no.

Fragglewump · 17/10/2014 13:13

Bloody awful!! You will have to explain the significance very early on too! I didn't want my dcs learning about oral sex very young! If you have a choice avoid other wise your child will have relentless piss taking their whole life!

BananaToast · 17/10/2014 13:13

Ok, exactly as I thought then. I admit when I noticed Ben Jones's initials I did snigger... Just thought others may be more mature than I am Grin

Definitely sticking to the no B rule. It's not even my favourite boys name so not a big loss, just one I thought we could potentially compromise on.

And I think because your child has to carry their initials/name about with them for the rest of their life, if you have any doubts as to whether a name could be a source of amusement - find another name.

fanjobiscuits · 17/10/2014 13:15

Bad

QuietNinjaTardis · 17/10/2014 13:17

Don't do it! My initials have caused sniggers over the years and it's bloody embarrassing (on a par with bj) so glad I'm married and could change my name. Please don't do it. They will get picked on or at the very least embarrassed by it.

Dumbledoresgirl · 17/10/2014 13:18

I am married to someone with the initials BJ - first and middle name, not surname.

To be totally honest, I have been with him 24 years and it has never once occurred to me that his initials have any significance. I have just asked him if he has ever had any trouble from it and he said no.

Seems like a complete non-issue to me.

Ludways · 17/10/2014 13:23

I knew a Bethany Jane in high school and she was actually called BJ by everyone at school. It started as a piss take but she got it so often it just became her normal name iyswim.

BananaToast · 17/10/2014 13:26

Unless everyone here had said it was fine I would not consider using it. Responses have confirmed my initial thoughts, so it will definitely not be happening!

Bad.
I receive report card things for DS and teachers are supposed to initial their comments. People in my previous office were referred to as MJ etc - it's everywhere, just don't do it. It applies long after the child leaves school. Some will be able to carry it off and laugh about it (expect Boris Johnson can) but others will be mortified by it.

oaktober12 · 17/10/2014 15:26

My friend is a BJ (first and middle name, rather than surname) and what started as a funny nick name is now just what we call her without thinking about it, its just her name.

Also, BJ Novak seems to have done alright

Aherdofmims · 17/10/2014 22:48

Very bad. There are so many names out there you don't need one with a B!

Bordersmummy · 17/10/2014 22:52

Boris Johnson was my first thought. Not sure which is worse.

iamafrood · 17/10/2014 22:54

My brother is a a BJ. Honestly never thought about it.

Rocadaboyce · 17/10/2014 23:03

I am a BJ! Really didn't cause me any issues but I had big lugs to distract the bullies Grin

Vanillaradio · 18/10/2014 11:18

I wouldn't! Ds's first name starts with a B and we vetoed all middle names starting with a J or O!

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 18/10/2014 13:39

How often is anyone really called/known by their initials? I've never had my initials referred to my whole life.

Chottie · 19/10/2014 05:51

Please don't. It's a big no from me too.

FabulousFudge · 19/10/2014 06:41

Very bad!

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 19/10/2014 07:35

I know a Ben Jones and it didn't even occur to me until I read this thread!

Rustyzilla · 19/10/2014 13:47

Hi banana, same dilemma here. I have already vetoed names beginning with B for the same reason. Then again, I am the type of person who wouldn't buy a car if the license plate spelt 'bum' or the like childish
