Names for twins too matchy-matchy?

I’ve NC’d for this as no one IRL knows I’m pregnant yet (apart from DP, obviously!) but I’m in the early stages with twins, don’t know the sex yet. We’re in agreement re boys’ names but girls’ names are taking a little longer. There are two names which I absolutely adore. DP isn’t 100% convinced but he hasn’t out and out vetoed them either. His main concern is that he thinks they’re a bit too similar and ‘twinny’ names. The names I love are Aurelia and Allegra. I can see that they start and end with the same letter, but they sound different to each other – it’s not as though I’m suggesting Aurelia and Amelia for example! I would happily use either of them for a single DD so it’s not the similarity that appeals, or only in so far as they are names of a similar type.

What do you think? Too matchy, or okay?

I wouldn't use anything that started with the same letter - in the future if you get stuff addressed to "A smith" it would be too confusing!

Bowlersarm · 14/10/2014 16:47

I don't mind same initials. I think they are a bit matchy though.

squeak2392 · 14/10/2014 17:43

Hmmm, I wouldn't be like 'Sigh, why would you call them that?' (cos I don't like matchy names) but I do think they sound too similar. It's just because they both share 3 sounds - A-e-a. If it was Aurelia and Anya I think it would be okay.

Will you be using nns for either of them? That would be fine, I think.

They are both lovely names though.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/10/2014 17:45

I think it is a bit matchy.

What about Serena?

Would work with Aurelia or Allegra and is in keeping with the vibe you seem to favour (as do I).

Sundaedelight · 14/10/2014 19:33

Allegra and Seraphine

Allegra and Celine

Allegra and Josephine

LarrytheCucumber · 14/10/2014 19:38

We know Abbie and Amie and I still can't remember which is which without thinking. I think if names are too similar other people will mix them up.

answerthebloodyphone · 14/10/2014 20:00

I think they are a bit too similar, yes.

But I really do hate the whole same initial on twins thing so I'm probably biased with that one.

MerryMarigold · 14/10/2014 20:21

I think they're too matchy. But they may be boys, or 1 of each! I had names sorted for my twins until a couple of weeks before they were born. They were going to be James and Tamsin. They are neither!

MerryMarigold · 14/10/2014 20:23

I know twins called Jessica and Jennifer. They are not identical but I can never remember which one is which. One is in my dd's class (has been for 2 years) and I still can't remember if it's Jessica or Jennifer! Poor things. I bet if it was Jessica and Aurelia, I would remember who was in which class.

helensburgh · 14/10/2014 20:25

My two have the same initial and we've never had an issue with letters being addressed with initials etc.

It may happen I guess but its not a good enough reason to not do it.

GoodboyBindleFeatherstone · 14/10/2014 20:25

In my head they're Allie & Ellie which really is a bit matchy!

moxon · 14/10/2014 20:27

I didn't think they were too matchy, but having read merry's comment I think that for clarity's sake you should probably choose a different second name; I prefer Aurelia anyway.
How about Aurelia and Petra?

MerryMarigold · 14/10/2014 20:33

Let's hope they're a girl and boy, and then you'll be sorted - with choices! Go on, tell us your boys' ones.

ToomuchIsBackOnBootcamp · 14/10/2014 20:37

Too matchy for me. I think twins are much better with very different names, esp first letters.

My friend is a twin with a very matchy name to her sister and they both absolutely hate it - her twin insisted on using her middle, different, name to give her a seperate identity all thru teenage years, and still does with close friends, with my friends full agreement as they both hated being thought of as a "pair" only rather than 2 individuals. They do adore each other tho and their bonds is amazing, so you will have a great experience as a mum to twins!

birdofthenorth · 14/10/2014 20:43

Too match and I think it would actually l dilute and confuse both names to use them together.

What about

Aurelia and Emmeline
Aurelia and Claudia
Aurelia and Annabel
Aurelia and Vivien

MiddletonPink · 14/10/2014 21:01

I like Allegra, not keen on Aurelia.

I would have non matching initials tbh.

YonicScrewdriver · 14/10/2014 21:06

I mix up my nieces who both have two syllable names starting with a vowel (think Evie and Emma, kinda) and they aren't even twins! Just if you don't see them often then always see them together, your brain can mix things.

Aurelia and Cara?

Aurelia and Jasmine?

TsukuruTazaki · 14/10/2014 21:06

Way too matchy

Use one as the other twins middle name if you really want to use them

E.g. Allegra middle name
and
first name Aurelia

Artandco · 14/10/2014 21:08

Allegra and Ophelia
Allegra and Erin

azurepapallo · 14/10/2014 21:17

It is good for twins to have distinctly different names. Although both lovely I think these may be too similar.

Have you tried shouting them? With twins you will spend their whole childhoods saying both names at the same time - make sure they don't blend into one another and that it would be easy for the child to distinguish who was being called.

azurepapallo · 14/10/2014 21:18

Oh, congratulations btw!!

If you haven't already, go find a twins club to go along to, you'll get great advice.

BigGlasses · 14/10/2014 21:24

I have non id twins called Fraser and Ewan and people still get their names mixed up! They HATE it. I think if their names were more similar it would happen even more. Life with a twin can be very special, but it can also be very hard, and anything you can do to get them treated as an individual will help. Allegra and Aurelia are too similar for me. Sorry.

Itsfab · 14/10/2014 21:31

Better than Tom and Tim but yes, same initials could be a bit problematic in the future. You would have to get full name name tags for school.

OutragedFromLeeds · 14/10/2014 21:37

Too similar.

mathanxiety · 14/10/2014 22:04

They are too matchy to my ear.

I love Aurelia but Allegra is an allergy medication or a car.
