Names for twins too matchy-matchy?

I’ve NC’d for this as no one IRL knows I’m pregnant yet (apart from DP, obviously!) but I’m in the early stages with twins, don’t know the sex yet. We’re in agreement re boys’ names but girls’ names are taking a little longer. There are two names which I absolutely adore. DP isn’t 100% convinced but he hasn’t out and out vetoed them either. His main concern is that he thinks they’re a bit too similar and ‘twinny’ names. The names I love are Aurelia and Allegra. I can see that they start and end with the same letter, but they sound different to each other – it’s not as though I’m suggesting Aurelia and Amelia for example! I would happily use either of them for a single DD so it’s not the similarity that appeals, or only in so far as they are names of a similar type.

What do you think? Too matchy, or okay?

I like them both and think they sound good together.

They have the same level of 'fanciness' and sound quite well to do.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 14/10/2014 22:13

Not different enough from each other for me.
Vanessa Feltz has Allegra and Saskia.

I quite like Allegra, although being used as the name of a drug isn't so great. Aurelia not so much as it sounds a bit too much OTT for my personal taste.

I do think twins deserve more distinction in their names, beginning and ending with the same letter isn't so great really.

Aurelia and Josephine
Aurelia and Otillie

Fizzyplonk · 14/10/2014 22:25

If you love the names I'd use them they might end up with very different sounding nicknames anyway like Rae and Legra/Ally. I'd think carefully about middle names that they could use if they chose (rather than family names etc that are not very nice)

Other options
Athena
Greta
Chiara
Arianna
Livia
Anya
Zarana
Xanthe

Thanks everyone. My initial reaction, despite the consensus, is "but I looooove these names", which on one hand is the sort of response you want to confirm you really do adore a name enough to use it, but I do take on board the comments about how they themselves might feel.

Hmm. Thanks for the alternative suggestions. I quite like Chiara and Claudia.

My DP's favourite names are Georgina/Georgia, which I quite like and which work quite well with either Aurelia or Allegra, and Constance which is okay but I don't love it. It might work as a middle name though, since it hasn't got an "a" sound at the end.

Hmm again. Aurelia Constance and Georgia Lucy?

MerryMarigold our boys' choices are Felix William and Theodore (Theo) Patrick.

Aurelia sounds like it might part of your ear (to me anyway) as in, "I've damaged my aurelia and now have reduced hearing in my left ear.

Allegra is cool and strong.

I don't actually find them too match, but I don't have much twin experience.

Suckitup · 15/10/2014 06:57

Not only are they too matchy, they are difficult to say. I have never heard of Aurelia anyway. I think they are the type of names that people will struggle to remember too.

If the twins are identical, at least give them different names!

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/10/2014 07:40

I like Aurelia Constance but think Georgina would would better with it than Georgia.

Surfsup1 · 15/10/2014 09:52

Constance adds to the ear thing for me. Aurelia Constance sounds like a form of tinnitus.

AccidentallyInLove · 15/10/2014 10:09

I think they're beautiful names and sound lovely together!

Artandco · 15/10/2014 10:10

I much prefer Allegra.

How about:

Allegra Constance and Clementine Georgia

I can't for the life of me spell Aurelia properly and spell check can't cope either!

BarryGoosey · 16/10/2014 01:59

Each name has a different "a" sound and they are two distinct names. I would have no problem with it and they are both beautiful.

ChippingInLatteLover · 16/10/2014 02:04

Definitely too matchy - sorry.

CheerfulYank · 16/10/2014 02:08

Lovely names but a bit too similar I think.

CheerfulYank · 16/10/2014 02:10

I'd say use Allegra because it's beautiful but not usable in the States as it's an allergy medication. :o

butterfliesinmytummy · 16/10/2014 02:20

I think matching intials are always difficult, when mail arrives for Miss A. Jones etc, especially as they get older.

And yes, Allegra translates as Benedryl in the USA (although I still love it). Not so keen on Aurelia ... Oh really, yeah?

nooka · 16/10/2014 02:21

Love the boys names you've chosen, very nice combinations. I don't like siblings having the same initial, and especially not for twins. I'm afraid I don't like Aurelia at all, and also think that together they are a bit of a tongue twister. I quite like Allegra, although I don't know what diminutive it might have (I like nns :))

Allegra and Georgina sound good together I think, some similar sounds but not matchy. Looking at your other choices, Georgina Lucy and Allegra Constance both sound good to me. I think that either would also go well with both of your boy options.

AdoraBell · 16/10/2014 02:33

Would the nick names be similar too? The names are too similar for my liking.

My twin's names both end in the same letter but sound different and nick names are very different. Almost like Veronica and Alexandra.

I agree with pp who said similar names can make it more difficult for others to distinguish between them.

mathanxiety · 16/10/2014 03:23

I love Aurelia Constance and Georgina Lucy. I think they really complement each other.

MerryMarigold · 16/10/2014 13:21

Theo and Felix are gorge!
