I love the name Evelyn, but pronounced Ev-a-lin. I don't like the eve-lyn pronunciation, but I want to shorten it to eve or evie, makes no sence really...

How would you pronounce it? Iv been told that eve-lyn is the male version of the name.

Are they're other names where evie can be used as short?

I don't think there are male/female pronunciations just regional ones. I pronounce it as evva-lin, know a few Irish ones and they all pronounce it this way, but I think most English people would pronounce it as eve-a-lin.

birdofthenorth · 14/10/2014 11:58

I'd say Ev-uh-lin. Really love this name but bit mad about Eve/ Evie- much more popular and a less lovely sound to my ears.

EvenBetter · 14/10/2014 12:58

I'd say Evv-ah-Lin, I'm not english though.

bringbackfonzi · 14/10/2014 12:59

I'd say Eve-lyn. I think it's a lovely name. I guess you could get Evie from Genevieve?

shakemysilliesout · 14/10/2014 14:54

You will hear both pronunciations equally in my experience - if you cant get used to that it may not be the name for you. I guess a bit like Aaron's have to cope with.

DragonFlyx · 14/10/2014 15:24

Haha I hear my name pronounced as different similar sounding names! I got used to it growing up and now I don't correct anyone who I'm never going to see again lol!

Just wanted opinions on how it's pronounced more often :)

I really wanted to find a nice traditional, uncommon, pretty name and I think Evelyn fits the bill just right

Evelyn is a really pretty name - to me it's Eve-lyn.

strawberrypenguin · 14/10/2014 15:30

I'd say eve-lyn if I'm just reading it but if I was introduced to your DD I would say it how you chose to pronounce it! I don't think either way is 'right/wrong'

FruitbatAuntie · 14/10/2014 15:35

My grandmother was an Evelyn, pronounced Ev-lyn. Lovely name (lovely lady too).

TurquoiseDress · 14/10/2014 17:00

I do like the name Evelyn but for me personally the variation in pronunciation would really annoy me!

nemno · 14/10/2014 17:03

My MIL and niece are Eve-lyn s. Until I met them I pronounced it Ev-e-lyn. I don't think there is a correct way.

magichandles · 14/10/2014 17:08

My grandmother was an Eve-lyn and I have just given DD her name as a middle name, to be pronounced the same.

lottiegarbanzo · 14/10/2014 17:11

I'd use (and always hear) three syllables either way - eh-vuh-lin or ee-va-lyn. I've never said or heard Eve-Lynn.

I think of ee-va-lin (Waugh) as male, eh-vuh-lin (Glennie) as female.

Abzs · 14/10/2014 17:14

I would presume ev-eh-lyn for a girl. To me eve-lyn is male, as Evelyn Waugh.

CalamitouslyWrong · 14/10/2014 17:20

I'd probably pronounce it ev-lin, rather than the two options offered.

DressingGownFrown · 14/10/2014 17:23

I know someone called Ev-a-lyn who is an Evie. It's fine.

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 14/10/2014 17:24

I think it's 50/50. It's a lovely name either way, well due for a comeback.

Lezprechaun · 14/10/2014 17:29

My daughter is Evelyn, pronounced Ev-A-lyn and we tend to use Eva as a nickname. I love it but will warn you it's NOT uncommon. She is 2 years old and 1 of 3 Evelyn's in her nursery with 5 additional little Evie's / Eve's and Eva's.

squeak2392 · 14/10/2014 17:35

I love it. I pn it Eve-lyn as Ev-a-lyn sounds slightly more masculine to me, but both pn are common, so of course I'd pn it Ev if you told me it was. Eve/Evie are find as nns since the spelling is the same (and really since it's just a nn you call her Kitty and it would be fine).

squoosh · 14/10/2014 17:40

Definitely becoming more popular.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/10/2014 17:43

I'd say Ev-Lin or Eve-Lin but the former comes more naturally to me.

LittleBairn · 14/10/2014 20:27

Ev-a-lyn. Its a beautiful name.

DragonFlyx · 14/10/2014 20:36

Is it really becoming popular? I'd never heard of it before reading it on a forum and fell in love with it. I liked Ava too but OH wasnt too keen when his mum scrunched her nose up at it :(

I only know of one other person with my name, I'd never known any children with my daughter's named but once she was born, I noticed more babies being named the same, although still not all that popular, it was annoying! Can't blame the parents for liking a name though :)

Lots of older names coming back, I really love older names!

OP posts:
LittleBairn · 14/10/2014 20:43

It's really not all that popular at all the one I knew would be 30 now.
As a nanny I've haven't heard it at all recently, its mostly all Eva, Eve and Ava being used.

tortoisesarefab · 14/10/2014 20:47

The one I know is pronounced ev-e-lyn (English)
