I picture some huge Southern matriarch.

moxon · 13/10/2014 10:43

I like.

OldCatLady · 13/10/2014 10:44

I went to a private school and 'Augusta' was one of the boarding houses there. Not sure I would have heard of it otherwise.

Potential for people to pronounc it 'August-uh' rather than 'or-gust-uh' If you see what I mean...

MrsHathaway · 13/10/2014 11:11

How about Adelaide? A bit easier to carry and less tryhard which is what I think you mean by "posh".

Or Victoria? Similar vibe, I think.

eggplanty · 13/10/2014 11:16

Thank you for the suggestions- none of them pull me like Augusta though..

So far I've got a large southern matriarch, sitting in a helicopter, gorging on chocolate.. Confused

I like it. It reminds me of the lovely nurse I work with :)

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 13/10/2014 11:30

I really like it. It's an old person sounding name though but only because it's not one you hear very often. 5 yrs ago, if someone said they were going to call their child Martha, you'd have thought Anne of Green Gables or similar wouldn't you?.

Gussie I don't like, August is more likely which is quite nice but who knows with kids, it probably won't be down to you. Would you hate it if she were just called "G" or "Gusty" ?

I love Elizabeth but don't like any of the derivatives much so I didn't use it.

This isn't v pleasant, though I can't think of any female saints that didn't meet a nasty death, usually at the hands of their fathers. Nice.

I'd go for it !

Aebj · 13/10/2014 11:36

It's a small town to Western Australia

AmITwirly · 13/10/2014 12:14

Isn't one of the characters in an Oscar Wilde play called Aunt Augusta? So it makes me think of a rather forbidding, severe, Victorian, dowager duchess-type character.

Legionofboom · 13/10/2014 14:11

My first thought would be golf. Then Augustus Gloop. Neither endear me to the name at all I'm afraid.

Gussie is awful and makes me think of gusset. Aggie is marginally better.

Legionofboom · 13/10/2014 14:13

AmITwirly I think there was an Aunt Augusta in the Jeeves and Wooster novels too. Clearly it's a good name for an Aunt Grin

UriGeller · 13/10/2014 14:14

Would you prefer it shortened to "Org" or "Gusty"?

moggle · 13/10/2014 14:16

What about Alberta? Maybe just me, but it doesn't have the same posh overtones of Augusta, Helena, and other 'a' names.
I have fond memories of the Canadian province of that name though, so maybe that's clouding my judgement!

Alsoflamingo · 13/10/2014 14:16

Makes me picture a v. plump girl, for some reason. Think may be because it puts me in mind of Augustus Gloop in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.

Shroomboom · 13/10/2014 14:17

Makes me think of golf Grin

CleanLinesSharpEdges · 13/10/2014 14:18

Makes me picture a "Miss Trunchbull" from "Matilda" type character. And Augustus Gloop. And "gusset". Sorry.

Burmama · 13/10/2014 14:21

Awful. Gusty. Busty Gusty. No way.

squoosh · 13/10/2014 14:29

So far I've got a large southern matriarch, sitting in a helicopter, gorging on chocolate...

Sounds like a good way to spend a Monday afternoon.

BirdintheWings · 13/10/2014 14:31

Would Octavia hit the spot? There's a family at DS's school with an Augustus and Octavia (and Atlanta, and Persephone, and Hugo, I believe).

Minkah · 13/10/2014 14:33

The meaning of the word August really puts me off it as a name.

cherrybombxo · 13/10/2014 16:37

Horrible all round. It's a no from me, sorry.

PamShoo · 13/10/2014 19:15

First thing I thought of was Augustus Gloop. It seems like a 'big' name to give a child.. I imagine a grown woman otherwise..

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/10/2014 19:16

Dislike - sorry.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 13/10/2014 19:55

If not the golf course/Masters which is my first thought, then my second is an extremely forbidding and forthright woman who positively bustles around, mostly at speed through corridors. In my vision she is a substantial presence to say the least. Hard to imagine she was ever a baby or a child at all really.

I suspect that isn't really the desired image, sorry.

Sundaedelight · 13/10/2014 20:06

I know a very cool Augusta, it's a strong name which people will love or hate! Personally I love it. She is sometimes shortened to Gus but most say Augusta.

Because it's very unusual, most people's experience of the name is limited to Charlie and the Chocolate F. However, your daughter will take on that name and people will see her not Charlie&CF. It's the same with lots of names, it's just that they are more common. eg. Elsa is more well-known now for the film Frozen.
