Silas?

So I've always loved this name, and it's my first choice for this baby if its a boy. It fits all my criteria ie not too popular, real name (not made up), unambiguous spelling, plus I've always had a real soft spot for it. My husband has never really been a fan but I think he's come round (or at least can't really think of an alternative suggestion he likes more). My problem is, literally no- one I've mentioned it to likes it at all (including my daughter who immediately said nope, don't like it, pick something else!). Is it just me that likes it?

I know a 19 year old Silas. Very cool, IMO.

Radish9 · 28/09/2014 17:13

Thank you! I think it's cool too. Most people seem to immediately think of a murdering grandad in hollyoaks!

Reminds me of silage, sorry!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2014 17:51

Sorry but I really, really dislike it.

ARGHtoAHHH · 28/09/2014 17:54

Obviously think of Silas Marner which is no bad thing. I really like it but not keen on Si, which is probably what it'll get shortened too. That's just a personal thing though, I know a bell end called Si (short for Simon )

Bowlersarm · 28/09/2014 17:56

I don't watch holly oaks so not a connection I have.

I would go for it. It'll just become his name, people will get used to it and your lovely boy will eclipse any negativity about the name. It's so rare he won't need to use his surname - how cool is that?

TeWiSavesTheDay · 28/09/2014 17:56

I know it, have met one kid with this name, about 8 or so, kept kicking my 2yo's toy cars.

It was also the murderous bad guy in Heroes.

So not one I'm a fan of really!

MrsPatMustard · 28/09/2014 18:29

Sounds like silage - not a nice connotation...

davidjrmum · 28/09/2014 18:36

I work with a Silas, it's never shortened to Si and I've never thought that it sounds like silage - I like it.

Boobsofsteel · 28/09/2014 18:37

Love it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2014 18:59

Do you like Simon? Lovely name and much, much nicer imvho.

Love it :)

Far nicer and more interesting than Simon!

Bowlersarm · 28/09/2014 19:29

Eugh to Simon. He's a 50 year old man.

LSDeacon · 28/09/2014 19:31

Simon is up there with Nigel and other equally geeky names.

Silas is lovely. Have you thought about Cyrus?

VivaLeBeaver · 28/09/2014 19:35

I love Silas.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2014 19:36

See, when I think of Simon I think of, Lord of the Flies' and he is an amazing character in that.

KellyElly · 28/09/2014 19:37

Reminds me of the type of name a movie villain would be called. I'm not a fan.

Clearlymisunderstood · 28/09/2014 20:08

I know of a 2 year old silas, when his mum first told me the name I blurted out "omg like the serial killer in holly oaks" (so embarrassing and I apologied profusely) but now I really like the name, I don't hold that connotation anymore and when anybody says the name I just think of he smiley little silas that I know

FixItUpChappie · 28/09/2014 20:18

I like it but if choosing an -as sounding name I'd personally go with Elias which I like quite a bit more.

Radish9 · 28/09/2014 20:20

Thank you everyone for your comments! Not too many serial killer connections, though I realise it is what a lot of people will think. I'm hoping Bowler's right, and that the name would soon be associated with the boy and any other connotations forgotten.
Not keen on Simon, it is a little dull IMO. And Cyrus is lovely, but we know one and I think it is too much of a rarity (at least round us!) to 'copy'.

I love Silas, it's a great name.

Simon is also a lovely name, it's DS5s middle name.

YoniMitchell · 28/09/2014 20:44

Wasn't there a kids' tv programme in the 80s with a boy called Silas? He rode a horse along a beach to pan pipes in the opening sequence iirc.

Anyway, a cool name for a real individual , as long as you have a surname that can carry it (e.g. Silas Smith sounds a bit odd IMO!).

gamescompendium · 28/09/2014 20:52

Don't watch Hollyoaks so don't know the serial killer association, I immediately thought Silas Marner but that's a nice connection. I like it, and would just stare at someone who brings up the Hollyoaks connection and say 'Oh, I don't watch soap operas'.

I've just googled Silas and Silas Marner comes up as the top suggestions, but Silas on its own gives you St Silas and a character from the Vampire Diaries.
