Silas?

So I've always loved this name, and it's my first choice for this baby if its a boy. It fits all my criteria ie not too popular, real name (not made up), unambiguous spelling, plus I've always had a real soft spot for it. My husband has never really been a fan but I think he's come round (or at least can't really think of an alternative suggestion he likes more). My problem is, literally no- one I've mentioned it to likes it at all (including my daughter who immediately said nope, don't like it, pick something else!). Is it just me that likes it?

Sounds like silage Confused

DogCalledRudis · 30/09/2014 00:05

Very cool indeed! Love Silas

diddl · 30/09/2014 09:04

Fabulous name.

BreeVDKamp · 30/09/2014 16:08

There was a Silas in my year at school, his middle name was Neptune!!! He did get called silage sometimes :( I think it is a v cool name, in a sort of chilled out way, not popular jock boy sort of way.

Guin1 · 01/10/2014 15:36

Great name. Would be on my list if current bump was a boy.

Chachah · 01/10/2014 15:43

Silas = the evil self-harming albino monk in the Da Vinci code.

That being said I have friends who called they little boy Silas, and it's like all names, once you actually know a child called that, the other associations soon disappear.

Pantstootight · 01/10/2014 17:24

I don't like it at all. I wouldn't want to name my Ds Silas.
Ok, it's a real name and not commonly used but I think it sounds old, dull and smacks of trying too hard to be super original with an uber cool name.
I had to study Silas Marner at school, did't get many positive thoughts on him, an old, lonely miser who eventually adopted a little girl...never finished the book but bought the students notes instead. Dull.

maggiethemagpie · 01/10/2014 19:50

I remember the 80s programme too. I always think of Silas as a baddy though, a cool, scary baddie. Not a little baby!

Radish9 · 01/10/2014 19:52

Oh dear, it wasn't meant to be pretentious! I've loved it since I read an article in a kids magazine about quads with one called silas when I was a teenager! My 2 other kids have top 60 names, so I'm not necessarily aiming for uber original but it would be nice if there weren't 3 in the class. Does it really come across as try hard?

The problem is that there are so many fictional bad guys with that name if you're two other children have fairly popular names he might look like the black sheep!

I think I would like it if I didn't have negative associations with it though Confused

What other names do you like?

applecatchers36 · 01/10/2014 20:42

Am thinking silage too..not the best association...

Lagoonablue · 01/10/2014 20:43

Like it.

Radish9 · 01/10/2014 20:55

Thank you for your comments,
TeWi, I also like Isaac and Theo, but they really are very popular now and probably on the rise. We have discussed Bran (but not agreed on a longer version), jasper and Hal (short for Henry) but I'm not convinced by any of them and my DH wasn't keen. So back to Silas. We live in a city so hopefully the silage association will not be very strong - it's not a word kids here will come across very often!

Love it.

mathanxiety · 02/10/2014 06:51

How about Amos?
Or if you like Bran how about Bram?
(Bran is the name of every single dog in every single Irish language schoolbook I ever had).
Or Aram (Armenian name).

I did Silas Marner in school. To combat the tedium, the teacher read passages when necessary with a Zummerzet accent. I think of it pretty much as a comedy name now as a result.

Coughle · 02/10/2014 06:53

Love it!!

Never heard the word silage before.
Never knew about the serial killer.

Beautiful name with just the right amount of "cool."

Dinnerfor1 · 02/10/2014 10:13

I'm obviously the only Hollyoaks fan, as straight away I thought "why is someone thinking of naming their child after a serial killer?!" Blush

I hadn't heard of the name otherwise. I think though, that once I met a child with that name, I would just think of the child, and not some random Hollyoaks character!

cherrybombxo · 02/10/2014 12:59

Horrible, and definitely the old man from Hollyoaks.

MarieJeanne · 02/10/2014 13:04

I love it. It was on my list for a boy along with Isaac.

squoosh · 02/10/2014 15:56

On the theme of serial killers, if he became a shepherd in later life he could be known as Silas of the Lambs!

I do like the name, but hate the inevitable 'Si'.

FlossieTreadlight · 02/10/2014 16:07

Love it and its currently top contender for our LO due in a couple of weeks - is its a boy Smile

usualnamechanger · 02/10/2014 16:09

No. Just no.

Minidanish · 07/10/2014 14:07

Lovely name...am biased as it's our son's middle name. Sounds v English and rural to me - unusual but "known", if you see what I mean?
