Plum or Boudicca

I'm just musing here not actually pregnant infact recovering from a miscarriage and hoping to TTC again this month but just getting ahead of myself so what do people think of these two which are new to my girls' list

Plum would be Victoria on the birth certificate but I don't like the other short forms except Tory and I'm not sure that'd work

Boudicca great role model, could be Boo when younger which is cute. I really like names with meaning and a story so slightly prefer it to Plum but the dick part of the name puts me off a bit.

Are both completely out of the question for a real life person?I don't even have hormones to blame if so

I think Tori is ok for a labour voter!

MehsMum · 27/09/2014 19:22

Agh, castlemilk, I came on this thread to make the Victoria/Boudicca link. You beat me to it.

Boudicca is a great name but I'd be worried how it might work in modern Britain (and I say this as one who has DC with some unusual names). Mind you, I heard of a Beowulf recently, aged about 5.

Hakluyt · 27/09/2014 19:55

"I love Plum. Why not just christen her plum?"

Because it's a slang word for testicle.

TheDisillusionedAnarchist · 27/09/2014 22:27

Well thanks for all the input Smile

I'm not sure whether to cross Plum and Boudicca off the list or stick my fingers in my ears ignore the naysayers and listen to the people who think they're fine. Although ran them past DH today and his thoughts were Plum is an insult (I've never heard of it) and refused to entertain Boudicca so they might both be out anyway.

Buddug is great, interesting the two names have a link but no Welsh heritage, the cat has a Welsh name but nobody can say it right including MIL so I am not sure a grandchild called Buddug would ever have her name said correctly.

If you use Plum after hearing what a thoughtful, kind, sensitive 13 year old said about it, then I dispair.

This isn't about you. It's about your daughter..

squoosh · 27/09/2014 22:55

'You plum' = 'you idiot'

'refused to entertain Boudicca.'

flowerygirl · 28/09/2014 14:35

Plum!!! Haha, my sister used to call me it when being an idiot. Plus, refer to ball bags. JUST NO

Castlemilk · 28/09/2014 18:49

Go, go for Buddug.

Castlemilk · 28/09/2014 18:50

Go on, I meant!

Bowlersarm · 28/09/2014 18:52

Buddug?

Horrible.

Sounds like a long way of saying 'bug'

NewEraNewMindset · 28/09/2014 18:53

I'm sorry I had to laugh at the 'these are not names for people ' comment Grin

LineRunner · 28/09/2014 18:57

I would opt for Clementine Cartimandua. You get to keep the whole fruit / late British iron age strong woman vibe.

Delphiniumsblue · 28/09/2014 18:57

I would go for the Plum option and would bet money on her changing it to Vicky when older!
I have met a Boudicca - difficult not to make judgements of the parents!

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/09/2014 18:58

Buddug is not the best name the Welsh language has to offer, though the link is interesting.

Castlemilk · 28/09/2014 19:42

Like Buddug a lot - one of those old Welsh names that sounds almost Scandinavian! Yes, not for the faint hearted though - although when said it of course sounds completely different to how it looks to a non-Welsh person I suppose.

Viviennemary · 28/09/2014 19:43

Both are equally dire unless you are a rock star or similar.

Secretblackandmidnighthag · 28/09/2014 19:49

Plum is an insult "you fuckin plum!"

Buddug is really ugly written down. I assume it's pronounced very differently.

thatsn0tmyname · 28/09/2014 19:49

I once taught a girl called Bodicea-poor thing. She didn't have strength to carry that name off.

Zippyandbungle · 28/09/2014 19:56

I don't usually comment on name threads but Plum will be refers to as a ball bag at some stage in her life. Please don't.

Delphiniumsblue · 29/09/2014 07:45

You do need strength to carry off some names- you can't look at a baby and know if they will have that strength. It always seems unfair to me to burden them with a name that needs 'strength' in the first place.

Castlemilk · 29/09/2014 15:06

Yes Secret, it's pronounced 'Bee-theeg'

with the 'th' soft, like in mother or father.

said in a very similar way to 'Phoe-be'.

the Welsh 'dd' is 'th' and the 'u' here is an 'ee' sound.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 29/09/2014 15:29

Yes, you plum means you div. plum is a terrible name, and Boudicca isn't great either.

RiverTam · 29/09/2014 15:36

If you call a child Boudicca she will turn out to be the weediest child in the class.

Conversely, If you call her Plum she'll be an utter - well, plum.

really - no, no and thrice no.

sorry about your MC Thanks.

nicename · 29/09/2014 15:46

I'm still pondering if its pronounced Boo-dicca or Bo-di-ceea. I wonder how they know?

Plum is cruel (I just think of dangly bits) and Boudicca is too... Not sure too 'what' but just too much. Was it her first or surname anyway? I can't imagine a surname that would go with it.

Reminds me of the (probably apothecral) story of some child in Glasgow named Hiawatha McGonnigal (or something equally Mc-something long).

nicename · 29/09/2014 15:51

Ohh Buddug. Makes me think of dungbeetle for some odd reason.

Maybe Janet is due a revival?
