As an English person who now lives almost on the other side of the world, yes Mumsnet is absolutely a British forum. Outside of UK hours it is virtually dead for a starter! As to whether it is predominantly English that's harder to say. Of course being British doesn't mean that you are white or just have British heritage, but the Japanese community in the UK is relatively small (only 40,000 or so) and I don't think that Japanese names are frequently discussed as an option here. I certainly was a bit surprised to see the names in the baby name listing, and would have asked about heritage too because of course it is relevant and not immaterial.

KoalaDownUnder · 08/09/2014 08:10

I also don't think you get to dictate which factors other people find 'relevant' to choosing a baby's name. Personally, I would take my heritage into account. That is just as valid as any other choice.

If it's not relevant to your choice, say so. Nicely.

Only1scoop · 08/09/2014 08:58

Ok so in future it's a one word answer of the name you prefer....

And we are NOT to ask any further questions.

I absolutely thought the OP was very abrupt.

burgatroyd · 08/09/2014 09:55

Op seemed abrupt but does it really matter if baby has Japanese heritage?

Is it odd that a Japanese person is called Margaret? I don't think so. Yet it might seem odd if a Japanese person is called Bonali. We need to challenge our perceptions and get over them. Many people around the world have English names. We live in a global village now. Its fair game.

Gawd's sake.......

fcukip · 08/09/2014 10:19

Is that what you're think of calling ur next baby squoosh? Grin

fuzzpig · 08/09/2014 10:33

I think both are gorgeous. To my (English) ear Emiko sounds slightly more young and girly, Etsuko sounds more... strong? But I love both. I love a lot of Japanese names (although going by the top ten I think the names I like are mostly older)

squoosh · 08/09/2014 10:34

Yes! Having been inspired by the Japanese theme I'm going to name babba squoosh after my favourite Japanese tipple. Grin

UriGeller · 08/09/2014 10:38

Etsuko. She could have nn Suki. Which is gorgeous.

fcukip · 08/09/2014 10:41

If only we would all call our babies our mn names...

Baby Fcukip, UriGeller, Squoosh and Fuzzpig.

squoosh · 08/09/2014 10:46

They sound like one cool bunch of kids. They'd kick Emily and Oliver's bums!

fuzzpig · 08/09/2014 10:47

Erm, I think you'll find that my baby would be called "fuzzpiglet" :o

squoosh · 08/09/2014 10:50

I hope you have piglet heritage to go with that name!

Username12345 · 08/09/2014 13:05

Emiko.

Etsuko sounds too masculine to me.

And I prefer nn. Emi to Etta.
