Anyone have a Hugo?

We have a ridiculous difficult surname that it proving hard to pair with anything!

One name that we are thinking about is Hugo. But I have two concerns - does it sound really pretentious and what is it likely to be shortened to?

I like the name in theory, but am struggling with seeing myself shouting this out in the park (Even though I live in Naice area).

BTW - we're having a surprise, so this may be a moot point if it turns out to be a girl!

I don't, but there is one at school. it isn't shortened. Smile

I like Hugo, don't know any and not heard it shouted in the park. I liked it bit it dosent work with our surname, sounds like a designers brand Grin

One of my best friends has a Hugo - great name. Love it! Go for it.

One of the local Doctors is a Hugo and he fits the foppish stereotype.

I prefer Hugh, I know a little Hughie and I am distantly related to a toddler Huw.

That came out a bit wrong (see user name for reason!). What I meant is, he's totally 'normal', not anything like a stereotyped posh, rich white boy.

It does sound ridiculously pretentious. I suspect it will shortened to 'huge' or 'hugh' (depending on age of the shortener).

I say this despite liking it a lot in theory. It's annoying.

My lovely nephew (15) is called Hugo. Sometimes people call him Hugh or Hughie but most people still with Hugo. They're rich, yes, but pretentious, definitely not. He's a lovely boy.

I've considered Hugh, but it really won't go with our surname.

I'm just worried that since neither DH nor I are posh, it will come across as though we're trying a bit TOO hard.

Gonna have to keep thinking….

I love Hugo - I have a Henry who was nearly one, but then a friend named her baby it and I felt I would have been copying.

She isn't posh and neither am I, if that helps :)

I love it, dh thinks it's pretentious though (and he's posher than I am!)...can't imagine it being shortened to anything.

I have one and it has been shortened/ adapted by different people in the following way:

  • Hugh
  • Huge
  • Hughie
  • Hugie

There are about 3 at his school that we know of.

Hmmmm, not a big fan. Sounds a bit posh and foppish. Wasn't there a Hugo on Made in Chelsea? (Definitely not a recommendation in my book....)

I know 3 that were born this year! None of their parents would ever be described as posh/pretentious.

One in my son's class (10yo) Not posh but my older son tells me that Hugo is a "bam name" much to my surprise.

I like Hugo. Most names start of 'posh' and then become more widespread and acceptable.

Hugo is popular in lots of cultures such as many in central and South America so is not stuck in an upper - class English ghetto as many seem to think. I like Hugo.

Hugo or Hugh is the name of our nephew. I'm not super keen on the full shebang but I would shorten it to Hugh

I think Hugo is ok, not too posh for this generation. I know one at my children's school and don't think it raises eyebrows particularly. Wouldn't be my choice but if someone had a baby Hugo I would think it was quite nice and a change from all the Harry and Olivers!

It's a really lovely solid name.

I'd trust a Hugo to bring my imaginary daughter home on time.

On second thoughts, my imaginary daughter would drive herself home on a Harley.

It's a yes from me, and not at all pretentious; a silly accusation made by people who feel socially intimidated.Grin

I know one. His parentsmother is a massive social climber, and she is quite open about using this name to give illusions of grandeur. It's not shortened.
