Anyone have a Hugo?

We have a ridiculous difficult surname that it proving hard to pair with anything!

One name that we are thinking about is Hugo. But I have two concerns - does it sound really pretentious and what is it likely to be shortened to?

I like the name in theory, but am struggling with seeing myself shouting this out in the park (Even though I live in Naice area).

BTW - we're having a surprise, so this may be a moot point if it turns out to be a girl!

Thoughts?

I don't, but there is one at school. it isn't shortened. Smile

I like Hugo, don't know any and not heard it shouted in the park. I liked it bit it dosent work with our surname, sounds like a designers brand Grin

One of my best friends has a Hugo - great name. Love it! Go for it.

Kantha · 29/08/2014 10:08

One of the local Doctors is a Hugo and he fits the foppish stereotype.

I prefer Hugh, I know a little Hughie and I am distantly related to a toddler Huw.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 29/08/2014 10:28

ps. The Hugo I know is neither foppish nor posh. He is third generation Chinese Smile

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 29/08/2014 10:30

That came out a bit wrong (see user name for reason!). What I meant is, he's totally 'normal', not anything like a stereotyped posh, rich white boy.

ArsenicyOldFace · 29/08/2014 11:14

It does sound ridiculously pretentious. I suspect it will shortened to 'huge' or 'hugh' (depending on age of the shortener).

I say this despite liking it a lot in theory. It's annoying.

aubreye · 29/08/2014 11:26

My lovely nephew (15) is called Hugo. Sometimes people call him Hugh or Hughie but most people still with Hugo. They're rich, yes, but pretentious, definitely not. He's a lovely boy.

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 29/08/2014 15:25

i prefer Hugh

breakfastinbread · 29/08/2014 20:26

I've considered Hugh, but it really won't go with our surname.

I'm just worried that since neither DH nor I are posh, it will come across as though we're trying a bit TOO hard.

Gonna have to keep thinking….

I love Hugo - I have a Henry who was nearly one, but then a friend named her baby it and I felt I would have been copying.

She isn't posh and neither am I, if that helps :)

littlejohnnydory · 30/08/2014 19:35

I love it, dh thinks it's pretentious though (and he's posher than I am!)...can't imagine it being shortened to anything.

Goldenbear · 31/08/2014 18:07

I have one and it has been shortened/ adapted by different people in the following way:

  • Hugh
  • Huge
  • Hughie
  • Hugie

There are about 3 at his school that we know of.

MrsPatMustard · 31/08/2014 18:27

Hmmmm, not a big fan. Sounds a bit posh and foppish. Wasn't there a Hugo on Made in Chelsea? (Definitely not a recommendation in my book....)

LilMissVixen · 15/09/2014 07:44

I know 3 that were born this year! None of their parents would ever be described as posh/pretentious.

TongueBiter · 15/09/2014 07:50

There is a Hugo in DS's class with an unenviable surname - not posh or foppish!

7to25 · 15/09/2014 07:55

One in my son's class (10yo) Not posh but my older son tells me that Hugo is a "bam name" much to my surprise.

5madthings · 15/09/2014 07:58

I know one, he and his family are lovely, not at all pretentious, it's a nice name :)

minniemaus · 15/09/2014 12:39

I like Hugo. Most names start of 'posh' and then become more widespread and acceptable.

poppydaisy · 15/09/2014 16:10

I like Hugo!

What's a 'bam name'?

Lookingforfocus · 16/09/2014 08:07

Hugo is popular in lots of cultures such as many in central and South America so is not stuck in an upper - class English ghetto as many seem to think. I like Hugo.

Only1scoop · 16/09/2014 08:12

Hugo or Hugh is the name of our nephew. I'm not super keen on the full shebang but I would shorten it to Hugh

ataposaurus · 16/09/2014 08:20

I think Hugo is ok, not too posh for this generation. I know one at my children's school and don't think it raises eyebrows particularly. Wouldn't be my choice but if someone had a baby Hugo I would think it was quite nice and a change from all the Harry and Olivers!

Montegomongoose · 16/09/2014 08:27

It's a really lovely solid name.

I'd trust a Hugo to bring my imaginary daughter home on time.

On second thoughts, my imaginary daughter would drive herself home on a Harley.

It's a yes from me, and not at all pretentious; a silly accusation made by people who feel socially intimidated.Grin

BikeRunSki · 16/09/2014 08:30

I know one. His parentsmother is a massive social climber, and she is quite open about using this name to give illusions of grandeur. It's not shortened.
