I love Verity and Layla. Neither of those names are unusual though. Layla/Laila is very, very popular in Asian and Somali communities.

Laura Yes, Peter does indeed mean rock, but it was first used as a name metaphorically, not literally.
Am no Bible expert, but, in the Bible story, I think Jesus said words to the effect "Simon, I will call you Peter (= rock) because you are the rock (= strong foundation) on which I will build my Church."

In the same way, the name Stella (which literally means 'Star') was invented by a 16th cent poet as a symbol, not a literal description. In the poem, Stella is described as the heavenly inspiration of the poet (called Astrophel = star-lover).

Of course, you are right in principle and there will be exceptions to the general point I was making. Names don't operate according to fixed rules. And many older names have 'lost' their meaning through widespread use; I don't meet an Edward and think 'rich guard', for example! I was just saying that - as a general point - I do find it a tiny bit disconcerting when someone is given the name of a current everyday object, such as River.

All this is just my opinion. I am NOT being critical. People must be free to give babies whatever names they choose.

Layla

areyoubeingserviced · 14/08/2014 12:18

Luna, Willow and Piper would be my shortlist
With dd we had narrowed to 2 names and when she was born one suddenly seemed perfect.
Tabitha always makes me think of cats, but yes it does lend itself to some nice shortened names

magicalmrmistofelees · 14/08/2014 12:34

I love Verity (I have a Felicity and thinks it's in a similar vein). Also love Layla but prefer the spelling Leila (mainly because I know 2, one spelt each way, one is nice and one isn't!). Like Tabitha too. Thought id hate Piper but a friend has just had one and I've warmed to it as she's beautiful Smile.

ShovettyMcShovetty · 15/08/2014 10:13

Five of your names are also on my shortlist OP! We must have similar taste. Smile My favourite is Violet.

Flowersandleaves · 15/08/2014 10:20

Tabitha! Lovely, pretty and strong name.

bubalou · 15/08/2014 11:01

Ooh I love Luna. Smile

All pretty though.

bubalou · 15/08/2014 11:04

Oh and (personal choice completely) I don't like Layla - purely one of those situations when you know someone with that name! Angry

But I love Lyra -from the film 'the golden compass'.

Wink

Whatever you chose will be perfect. Don't decide until she's here and see what suits her best.

itsbetterthanabox · 15/08/2014 11:10

Verity and piper are nice.

Mutteroo · 16/08/2014 02:37

Tabitha - not keen
Violet - again not keen
Willow - Hearing quite a few of these & now finding it boring
Verity - used to know a Verity, lovely girl. good to see the name coming back into fashion.
Piper - love this name!
River - Also love this name. Ai personally wouldn't choose it, but that's because DH is quite old fashioned with his name choices.
Luna - another name I love
Raven - not so keen
Layla - knew. Layla & she wasn't a nice child which rather stupidly puts me off the name. I do like the name Lyla?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 10:36

Mmm - most of these I dislike, sorry. However, I love Violet and like Verity. Hate Piper, Raven, River and Layla.

aubreye · 16/08/2014 10:41

Violet or Verity then Raven for a middle name

itfcbabe · 16/08/2014 11:08

Tabitha it's ok
Violet love it
Willow would have used it for my daughter but watched butter advert hr after she was born 15 years ago
Verity not keen
Piper was told it means blowjob in Polish(not sure if true) but do love it
River no
Luna ok
Raven no
Layla lovely but quite popular i think

PuffPants · 16/08/2014 14:01

Violet

JennyBlueWren · 16/08/2014 14:01

Yes to:
Tabitha (although I wouldn't personally as that's my cat's name!)
Violet
Willow
Verity

Raven -if she'll almost certainly have dark hair! Can't have a blonde Raven.

Could she be Raven Verity and then as her hair colour settles you can go for whichever name suits best. I imagine Verity and Willow as lighter hair colour.

HibiscusIsland · 16/08/2014 14:26

Violet
