DH really likes it, I'm not sure. We already have Frances and like Miriam, Dominic, Joseph and maybe Beatrice (expecting twins, don't know the sex).

And in the north it will be pronounced as Clure. Another reason to avoid.

Mutteroo · 09/08/2014 10:23

I have quite a few friends of similar age called Claire/Clair/Clare & I think it's a beautiful name & is due for a revival.

I know a three year old Claire, really suits her!

Pandora37 · 09/08/2014 10:34

I think it would be very refreshing on a little girl today and stand out amongst all the frilly, girly names.

It sounds good with Frances but does make me think of Roman Catholic saints - Francis of Assisi and Clare of Assisi, Clare was one of his first followers. I'm sure most people won't think of that though and it's not a bad association to have at all.

NigellasDealer · 09/08/2014 10:34

mrsbungle you yourself are as dull as ditchwater and spiteful too or you wouldnt be using such hackneyed cliches and then even getting them wrong.
tickle i will give you a clue it was d????y Clare

ShadowStar · 09/08/2014 10:38

I'm another one who can't get past it's popularity in the 70's and 80's.

But I completely disagree with the idea that it's chavvy. It's not at all chavvy.

CremeEggThief · 09/08/2014 10:44

It's ok, but Clara is lovely.

SantanaLopez · 09/08/2014 10:47

DH is Catholic, Pandora. It doesn't bother me too much because they won't be a pair.

Don't think Claire is Chavy in the slightest, it's a name for a strong intelligent women or at least they are all the adult ones I have know. Think there are a couple of baby Claires in groups that I do with dd, so maybe name is on the rise again! it is the nice looking spelling too, I think Clara is a bit wet and reminds me of the girl from the Heidi books...

Capitola · 09/08/2014 11:08

It is not chavvy!

I like it. There were 4 in my class at school and they were known by totally '4 Marys' style nicknames both in and out of school - must have been quite annoying for their parents..

17leftfeet · 09/08/2014 11:14

'In the north it will be pronounced as Clure'

Really no!

Only in Liverpool and a small area of Lancashire around Preston

WhereHas1999DissappearedToo · 09/08/2014 12:31

I quite like it, a very pretty and elegant name.

DD (15) has two Claire's (one spelt Clare) in her year at school and it's very popular here in NZ and in Australia.

So much better than Clara.

Gumnast2014 · 09/08/2014 13:04

It was just my opinion being a Clare myself that it's chavvy

Not meant to offend just my thoughts

DurhamDurham · 09/08/2014 13:12

I'm in Durham in the NE and I would pronounce it Claire, not Clure, what a strange thing to suggest that everyone in the North has the same accent Hmm

Holidayfun · 09/08/2014 13:14

17leftfeet
Maybe i should have written the North West where Clare is pronunced Clure by many. Not just Liverpool and Preston.

Holidayfun · 09/08/2014 13:17

Calm down Durham, I'm not suggesting the whole of the North have the same accent, just that many areas in the North pronounce it Clure. I should have been more specific.

17leftfeet · 09/08/2014 13:18

I grew up in the north west and worked in Manchester -no Clures

Holidayfun · 09/08/2014 13:31

My cousin is called Claire, brought up in the North West and was often called Clure. Maybe it isn't that noticeably to people who don't have the name?
She hated it and as a consequence dislikes her name.
She did spend a lot of time with Cilla Black though Grin

17leftfeet · 09/08/2014 13:35

It's definitely a cilla black thing lol

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 09/08/2014 13:38

I'm a Claire. Easy to say, not many others her age will have it, never have to spell it, unless you choose Clare instead. I find it's the Birmingham accent that pronounces it Clur.

MsCoconut · 09/08/2014 13:50

I like it.

buttercrumble · 09/08/2014 13:57

Really dull

Shodan · 09/08/2014 14:16

Claire is the best name ever. Claires are witty, intelligent, beautiful, a bit quirky, successful and most of all, delightfully modest.

And couldn't be further from dull or 'chavvy'.

I say go for it, OP.

Grin
NigellasDealer · 09/08/2014 14:22

I used to work with someone from the north west and thanks to her my name was 'KLUR' for years
