Can we use Alice when DH is Alastair?

We are looking at names for DC1 due in Nov, sex is a surprise. DH has recently suggested Alice which I love and it goes well with middle name and our surname.

However, I had discounted this in my earlier thoughts and not even mentioned it to DH as it is very similar in sound to his name- he is Alastair. Is it too similar to DH's name to use?

He thinks this isn't a problem, but I can't decide if it actually matters or not.

I personally wouldn't use Alice. Sorry.

LexieSinclair · 04/08/2014 20:52

I don't think it matters.

Floop · 04/08/2014 20:56

People might think you'd named her after him.

Bit like the Will Smith - Willow, Jada Smith - Jaden thing.

TobyZiegler · 04/08/2014 21:02

I think you can... Think how you'd sign Xmas cards.

Love Alistair, Barny and Alice.

It's a pretty name.

DramaAlpaca · 04/08/2014 21:04

I don't think it matters. My name is similar to one of my DS's & I don't think anyone has ever even noticed. Certainly nobody has ever commented.

I love the name Alice.

Iggly · 04/08/2014 21:05

The world will implode and the gods will roar if you do.

Use the name you like! If it works then why not?

MysteriousCircusZebra · 04/08/2014 21:06

Its fine.

ACM88 · 04/08/2014 21:12

I think it's perfectly ok- if they were siblings then not so much, but I think it's got a nice ring to it, my name and my dad's name nearly rhymed and it glowed really nicely off the tongue to say our names together!

Breezy1985 · 04/08/2014 21:19

My friends DH is Alistair they have a 1yo Alice, no ones commented so far. Go for it Smile

Blueberrybaby · 04/08/2014 21:20

It's absolutely fine. I don't see the problem. Plenty of families name their children after themselves and use the exact same name. Then there are the names that have masculine and feminine versions; Nigel and Nigella anyone? Honestly I think you are over thinking it massively. Go for it.

That made me laugh Iggly Smile. I quite like the sound of a world imploding name!

Maybe I am indeed over thinking this then, thanks. Alice is a possible then. (I wonder if I can just get DH to change his name so I can definitely use it!)

I think it's fine. For siblings it would be too close but not for father and daughter.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/08/2014 18:19

No - sounds silly.

summerberries · 05/08/2014 20:18

Absolutely fine imo.

MsAspreyDiamonds · 05/08/2014 20:24

No I personally wouldn't, just too matchy matchy.

May cause problems with the post when a letter for A.BarmyBunting arrives.

How about Lydia?

CarmineRose1978 · 05/08/2014 20:29

My mum's name started with the same letter as mine, and it was a bit of a pain, to be honest. If post came addressed just to C. Rose , we didn't know who it was for - not the end of the world, but I'd avoid it for my kids.

barmybunting · 05/08/2014 22:04

MsAsprey, Lydia is lovely! Unfortunately we have a little niece called Lydia already who has the same surname as us as well so it is not a contender for us.

Carmine, that is one of my concerns with it. Although one of our other main contenders for a girl also starts with an A and our favourite boy option starts with the same letter as my name so I think we may be facing that issue anyway.

I misread the thread title and thought you were going to have siblings called Alice and Alistair, which I thought might be an issue (both getting called Al or Ali etc). With it being your DH though, I don't think it is a problem. I like the name Alice, very pretty.

Mutteroo · 06/08/2014 00:18

I don't think it matters at all. Alice is a gorgeous name & I would not link it with Alistair. Initials can be a problem so make sure baby has a different middle initial to her daddy. Mind you, my initials are different from my DS yet when DH picks up the post he gives me my son's letters & visa versa. Think he needs new glasses or needs to look a bit harder.

CheerfulYank · 06/08/2014 00:20

I think it's fine. But I am a Megan with a Margaret/Maggie. :)

I also know a Connor with a Constance.

LoveVintage · 06/08/2014 00:26

My rl name is very similar to Alice, which was one of my favourite names to use if we had had a Dd, and we would have used it despite the similarities. It is a lovely name.

Bue · 06/08/2014 13:13

It's fine. At first I thought it was your DS who is Alastair, which is way too sibling matchy matchy. But father and daughter is fine.
