Is it the hormones or is it just a lovely name to be called? I'd not be brave enough to use it but I just think it's a gorgeous sentiment.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Pangaea · 08/07/2014 13:03

I've met a Blessing. Did strike me as strange to my boring English ears, but as soon as I understood her heritage her name made sense.

She came from a culture where it is common to name your children a noun name, to describe what you think of them, or what you hope them to be.

I don't really know how to better articulate this without seeming culturally insensitive (and for the life of my I can't remember which country she was from) so I hope this makes sense.

What is your heritage OP?

Locketjuice · 08/07/2014 13:04

I don't like it..
Think its up there with rainbow, sunshine etc

TheBookofRuth · 08/07/2014 13:05

I'd assume your child was a Nigerian male, as all the Blessings I've met had been.

SantanaLopez · 08/07/2014 13:06

Scottish/Irish Grin

Weirdly, I would put it in a different category to Rainbow and Sunshine. Hmmm. That's funny, isn't it?

I'd assume you were Nigerian too. And I'd wonder if your other children had names like Precious or God's Gift.

SantanaLopez · 08/07/2014 13:09

That's even odder, I think it is quite feminine.

ShovettyMcShovetty · 08/07/2014 13:10

Oh funny - I know a Blessing who is female and Nigerian.

Pangaea · 08/07/2014 13:11

That was it! Nigeria! I'm fairly sure its a unisex name in Nigeria.

If you search Blessing in the people category on Facebook, they are both genders.

exexpat · 08/07/2014 13:11

I would also assume African or possibly Filipino. It's quite sweet, but I think for me it would fail the 'shouting across the playground' test.

squoosh · 08/07/2014 13:13

I'd also assume your were a God mega-fan.

SantanaLopez · 08/07/2014 13:14

I think it would be quite a burden if you wanted to be a teenage Goth Grin

Definitely fail that one, squoosh. Maybe it is just the hormones Grin

What about Nicola after La Sturgeon?

I know you're a fan.

SantanaLopez · 08/07/2014 13:17

Well, I'm having twins (I still laugh every time I tell someone Grin) so slightly torn between David and Cameron and Alex and Nicola.

"Beata" is a more European name which means "blessed".

squoosh · 08/07/2014 13:21

Grin Shock

Congratulations.

In that case it HAS to be little Alex and little Nicola.

Wee Eck and Nic.

SantanaLopez · 08/07/2014 13:25

Thank you so much Flowers My face did that too when they told us! Grin

That's interesting about Beata- any relation to Beatrice?

TheReluctantCountess · 08/07/2014 13:26

I teach a boy with that name and he is lovely, as is the name. He is Nigerian.

TheReluctantCountess · 08/07/2014 13:28

You can't call twins David and Cameron!

squoosh · 08/07/2014 13:29

Cameron and Osborne sounds very distinguished.

gymboywalton · 08/07/2014 13:30

i know a blessing-she is also from nigeria

ToniWol · 08/07/2014 13:30

I believe both (and possibly Beatrix) all stem from the Latin beati which means blessed.

BikeRunSki · 08/07/2014 13:34

The significance of David and Cameron together will be irrelevant by the end of May next year.

SantanaLopez · 08/07/2014 13:36

I actually like Beatrice/ Beatrix

David and Cameron was just a wee joke. Dead serious about Sturgeon and Salmond though Wink

Some Nigerian names are similar to names that zealous Puritans gave to their children in 16th c England where names like Fear-God, Repentance, and Obedience weren't uncommon.

Blessing has a much sunnier vibe than Obedience though!
