Does Sirius sound alright?

DS is due soon and still struggling with his name.
We like Jack and Sirius so thinking using both of them. Will it work?
Jack Sirius or Sirius Jack?

We also like David, Isaac and Charles.

We don't mind if there 2 or 3 middle names but we like Sirius in there if it doesn't work as a first. Oh, we have to get Jack in there as well.

PS. The surname is 2 syllables.
All thoughts welcomed.

I didn't say it wasn't from the books Grin

It was that or Lupin, since Longbottom is three syllables...

lettertoherms · 08/07/2014 01:35

How about Orion?

Marcipex · 08/07/2014 07:58

Go forLongbottom.

The HP thing wouldn't bother me but the dog star would. ... not sure why as it should be a great name, just seems wrong somehow.

AwesomeSuperTasty · 08/07/2014 08:08

Hm. Sirius Star is the name of a cargo ship that was hijacked a few years back. This is the first thing I thought of.

Slothlorian · 08/07/2014 08:11

Wasn't 'Evans' lily potters maiden name ?!

Provencalroseparadox · 08/07/2014 08:11

Brian is a Potter name

AWombWithoutARoof · 08/07/2014 08:11

I love Sirius, but agree, the HP link and the 'serious' thing would rule it out. Lucien?

Jack is really really really really really popular.

RiverTam · 08/07/2014 08:16

I really like it, and I don't know why but I have never connected Sirius with the word serious.

I've worked with an Aslan. After the first 'wow, cool name' it was just a name.

Rosa · 08/07/2014 08:19

I thought clouds and sky when i read it. personally i don't like it - sorry but your child you choose.

MrsMaturin · 08/07/2014 08:19

Lettertoherms - what about Hermia? That's Shakesperean too.

apermanentheadache · 08/07/2014 08:55

Why would you not use a name just because it was in a book?! I've never read Harry Potter because I am an adult, tried, but it's a kids' book

If you love Hermione, Sirius, Dumbledore, whatever: use It

pinkmagic1 · 08/07/2014 09:06

I actually really like it but I too have never read Harry Potter. I wouldn't let that put me off though if I really liked the name.
I think it is unique and beautiful but without sounding like you have made it up. Yes, he will stand out from all the Finleys and James but is that a bad thing?

ArcheryAnnie · 08/07/2014 09:33

It makes me think of Dodie Smith and the Twilight Barking, not Harry Potter!

I think it's a lovely name. Daft nicknames can be made from any name, so the fact this has one built-in (you cannot be Sirius) isn't a problem.

RiverTam · 08/07/2014 09:40

surely kids today don't trot out John McEnroe from the 70s and 80s catchphrase, do they?

quellerosiel · 08/07/2014 10:19

Good shout on Evans! Lily Potter's maiden name ;-)

In terms of Potter association, I think it will take a seriously (.....) long time for that series to date. But then I am a huge potterhead so I would say that! If its any consolation, Sirius is a really lovely father figure to Harry and I was always very fond of him as a character. Lovable rogue type.

And yy to James Sirius!!!!

Velvetbee · 08/07/2014 10:31

It's on DC3's baby names list but she's 14 so we've (hopefully) got a few years before we find out if she'll use it. I like it but as a middle name.

CAPTAINAWESOMESAUCE · 08/07/2014 10:33

Sorry, really don't like. Just my opinion.

Nereida · 08/07/2014 11:49

It's too Harry Potter.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/07/2014 14:13

I love it! Also love Harry Potter, mind. I think so long as you have one plainer name to balance it (in any order) it'll be okay.

Scarletohello · 08/07/2014 14:15

My friend named her cat Sirius cos it's black!

EbaneezerScrooge · 08/07/2014 14:54

We've decided its definitely a middle name but were not sure about whether DS should have 1 or 2 middle names

Jack Sirius or Jack "Something" Sirius?

The something will probably be along the lines of David, Robert, Edward, Isaac etc.

Thank you everyone for your opinions.
