Catherine/Katherine/Kathryn

I'm usually very anti incorrect spelling of names however I also have an illogical dislike for the spelling Catherine, it feels a bit sickly sweet and meh.
I also know a lot of mners have a huge dislike for K names and am seeking advice as to whether Katherine/ryn is simply wrong?
Seeing all 3 variations here on my screen I can't help liking Kathryn the most which goes against all my instincts.

I don't know yet whether I'm having a boy or a girl but struggle with girls names, I like traditional names that stand the test of time.

I prefer Katherine rather than Catherine and Kathryn is so plain I feel it seems like a totally different name. Sorry!

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 06/07/2014 18:15

Katharine is the 'original', but whichever you choose you'll always have to spell it! And if she goes by Kate, you'll also have that to contend with!

LemonBreeland · 06/07/2014 18:17

I prefer Catherine, always have. Don't like the K at all, and really dislike ryn ending.

Whyjustwhyagain · 06/07/2014 18:18

My opinion is biased because I have a Kathryn. We chose this spelling because 1) we like it, 2) I know we'd would shorten her name to Katie so I wanted her actual name to also start with a K , and 3) I prefer the 2-syllable Kathryn to the 3-syllable Katherine

RedToothBrush · 06/07/2014 18:26

Prefer Cathryn tbh.

MsBug · 06/07/2014 18:30

I prefer Katherine

Bowlersarm · 06/07/2014 18:31

Katherine would be my preference.

strawberrybonbons · 06/07/2014 18:32

Kathryn but biased because I know one and she is pretty awesome!

coffeetofunction · 06/07/2014 18:34

Catherine of course there no other to spell it WinkWink

SomeSunnySunday · 06/07/2014 18:34

Katharine or Katherine for me.

Takver · 06/07/2014 18:38

Depends on preferred nname, I'd say. Katharine/Katherine if you want a Kate or a Kitty, Catherine for a Cathy (Kathy seems very american to me), Catherine for a Cat, you get the drift . . .

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 06/07/2014 18:46

My name is Katherine so obviously that is my preference :)

Just to warn you I always introduce myself as my full name but have had people use pretty much every nn possible. People just automatically shorten it. Even the secretary at DD2's school has started calling me Kathy. It doesn't both me at all and I never correct anybody but I know some people wouldn't like it.

I sometimes have to spell it but I have given all 3 of my DDs names that I have to spell for people so don't find it a problem.

Gingerjv · 06/07/2014 19:50

Among these 3 names i prefer Kathryn)

mrssmooth · 06/07/2014 19:53

My dd1 is KathAryn. I too dislike the Catherine spelling. I n
Also know of a Cathryn ... Tis a lovely name!

Shakirasma · 06/07/2014 19:54

Kathryn is cool and that's a fact. I know this because I am one :-)

bauhausfan · 06/07/2014 19:54

Isn't it a teensy bit dull?

mrssmooth · 06/07/2014 19:56

Dd1s friends have started calling her "Kath" which I'm really struggling with. Our intention was to shorten her name to Katie but it just never happened. We have a nickname for her ... Think chocolate wafer biscuit in red packaging ...

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 06/07/2014 20:00

Catherine - but great name regardless of spelling Grin

Only one person has ever called me Cathy. I am too tall and unblonde to ever be a Cathy.

ashesandfire · 06/07/2014 20:28

I've always much preferred Catherine, I don't like the -ryn ending, it seems much plainer to me.

BikeRunSki · 06/07/2014 20:30

Kathryn

BigfootFiles · 06/07/2014 20:41

I pronounce Kathryn as a two-syllable name. Catherine/Katharine has three. The stresses fall differently too.

KA-thrin vs Ka-THUR-in. I prefer Kathryn, personally.

(HeartsTrump - Cathy of Wuthering Heights fame was definitely not blonde!)

SorrelForbes · 06/07/2014 20:43

Definitely Katharine (the original and the best) Wink

I've always pronounced Kathryn, Catherine and Katharine (my own name!) in the same way, with two-syllables. Ka-thrin.

LoonvanBoon · 06/07/2014 20:44

I had an old school friend who was a Catharine, & I think it's a lovely name (possibly influenced by the fact that she was a lovely person).

She did have a major problem with people misspelling her name, though - it happened all the time. People generally seemed to assume it was Catherine with an e.

Personally I don't like the -ryn ending & prefer any of the others, but given my friend's experience I'd probably go for Catherine or Katherine. I like K names, but then I have one!

littlejohnnydory · 06/07/2014 20:49

Not with an a in the middle - it will be spelt wrong all her life (trust me, I know!)

myusernameis · 06/07/2014 20:51

I prefer Katherine.
