Just that really, how would you pronounce it and what do you think as a name? Would be a brother for Luca if we decide to go with it.

Mat-ay-oh, didn't know it was Italian, I know two, one adult, one child both are Kenyan.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 05/07/2014 22:15

Mat-tay-oh
I know two little boys called Matteo both spell it double t. Lovely name. Goes well with Luca.

Pregnantagain7 · 05/07/2014 22:16

I have one, Matteo (I think is Italian spelling)

Ma - Tay - o

Eve · 05/07/2014 22:18

Mateo is (I think) the Spanish spelling.

TheHouseCleaner · 05/07/2014 22:18

What a lovely name! I pronounce it Ma-tay-o

ThePieSmuggler · 05/07/2014 22:21

Matt-ee-oh

scottishmummy · 05/07/2014 22:21

Ma-Tay-oh
I like it

Tobagostreet · 05/07/2014 22:21

Matt-ey-oh (again, like in Benidorm).

Coral2094 · 05/07/2014 22:45

Mat-ay-oh

Aliceinvodkaland · 05/07/2014 22:49

matt-ay-oh

Nereida · 05/07/2014 23:23

Ma-tay-oh

MonoNoAware · 06/07/2014 00:21

Please ignore my imagined pronounciation pregnant, my friend's husband is Romanian and her son's name is Matei, so very different to Mateo, but you can see why my first thought is to just sub the 'eye' for 'oh'

Op if you are having trouble pronouncing it then so are the many tens of thousands of people that your son will encounter in his lifetime. Do you really want to handicap your child with such an unpronouncable name?

mssleepyhead · 06/07/2014 08:44

We're having a ma-tay-oh too! With one T as he's part Spanish, not Italian. I absolutely love it : )

TheTravellingLemon · 06/07/2014 08:46

Mat ay oh. I know one called teo (Tay oh) for short, I always thought that it was nice.

Ludways · 06/07/2014 08:46

Mat-tay-oh

Wouldn't occur to me to say it any other way. Great with Luca.

I don't think it's an unpronounceable name to be lumbered with at all.

combust I have no problems pronouncing it thank you and as the vast majority of people on this thread have shown it's certainly not unpronounceable. I just wanted to see if he would encounter any different pronunciations if we decide on this name.
Thanks for your opinion.

Matteo if Italian. Mateo if Spanish.

Oriunda · 06/07/2014 15:02

Oh and it's Matt-ay-oh. I'm surprised anyone would mispronounce as it's a fairly well known name.

McBear · 06/07/2014 15:24

I'd put the second T in and everything will be fine. Easily acknowledged as what it is.

With one T I had to do a little mate eee oh. Then realised it was obvious.
I know a Luca. His brother is Alessio. Also obvious but different Grin

Thumbwitch · 06/07/2014 15:27

Mat-ay-o here too. Tayo is a nice nickname that I've heard used here (Australia) - obvs not spelt like that! Grin
Lovely name. :)
